For hundreds of years, whenever any fantasy is written about a kingdom of some sort in jeopardy, the female characters, especially princesses, are turned into objects.  They are used just as tools by the storyteller to give the hero, always a guy, something to fight for.  Always they are the ones put into danger with all past self-defense mechanisms somehow taken away.  When they get saved by our hero, even more insultingly enough, the princess always falls for the guy just for saving them and they get married after a day.  Being a girl in modern times, I seriously can't stand this cliché.  Women already have enough problems in the world, whether it is sexism in the workplace or not having the same rights as men.  Seeing another princess be de-humanized so the exclusive male hero can get to them is the tip of the iceberg.

Guys and girls deserve equal treatment in literature to express the worldwide need for the end of sexist ideologies.  How about for once the princess ends up getting out of the situation by her own wits, or they end up saving the knight.  Heck, you could just make a story about the princess saving everyone.  Whatever the case, a princess can have a stronger role in literature.  Just read an issue or two about the Sonic the Hedgehog Archie comics and you'll find a heroic princess by the name of Sally Acorn.  Not only is she the leader of the rebellion group The Freedom Fighters, but in a lot of situations, she ends up teaming up with Sonic to fight the war around them.
