#23: Too Much Action

You'd think in any type of book genre that the more action scenes included, the more audience appeal you will receive.  While this is somewhat true , such as in the Warriors book series, usually that is far from the answer.  In truth, balancing out action with drama is the best way to keep the plot interesting.  On one side of the coin, you have great fight scenes that keep the audience thrilled.  On the other side of the coin, the characters become relatable and we become attached to them until the very end.  A true balance of action and drama keeps the story flowing.

That is why adding too much action is actually destructive.  Without relatable characters fighting the battles, it just ends up feeling dull.  You can have two people just randomly fighting on the street, but without knowing them the fight will not be that interesting.  Sadly, not a lot of authors follow this logic.  They overuse action scenes in their stories and thus make the story boring.  It is a cliché that really needs to end, especially on movies.  If another Transformers movie ends up being overstuffed with action again, I might go mad.

But what about drama?  In truth, it can go either way.  Adding too much drama sometimes is destructive, especially if you add a romance into the mix.  However, adding more drama can actually benefit a story.  Just take a look at the entire Death Note manga series.  Although the drama and character conversations are more focused on, it still remains a great read internationally.  So sometimes adding extra of something can be beneficial.
