Although creating twin characters in a fantasy novel is a seemingly awesome idea, it can come with unintended problems. The chief issue is a lack of realism some authors use to depict these types of characters to the audience. Sometimes the twins will be depicted with seemingly no personality traits to set them apart in the audience's eyes. In other situations, one twin will be made as a representation of what the author sees as pure kindness while the second twin is made into their representation of evil. Finally, for some reason these characters are side-lined as secondary characters, leaving another character who usually is an only child or has a sibling of different age to be the main focus.
You may argue that it is okay not to make twin characters realistic due to the freedom the fantasy genre can give writers. However, giving relatable traits to the cast is essential to a successful novel. Whether the character is primary or secondary, the audience needs to leave the novel with an impression left by them. This is why side-lining or creating flat twin characters is a death wish. In fact, it is a pretty bad cliché.

If you want to make a pair of twins, make sure they stand out to the audience. Differing personality traits are a great start to this ideology. You can also make both characters your definition of good or even evil. They can even become the main characters if you are ambitious enough.

The point is that relatable characters make or break a story. Twins fit perfectly into this mold. Writing a great book means taking on ideas barely tackled before by others before you. Originality is key in every area.
