Changes can be good, right?

I got up and got ready for work. When I finished, I went and helped Kami. I dropped her off, then went to pick up a coffee. I figure I was going to need the caffeine if I was going to get through the work that piled on my desk.

I stood in line and waiting as customers are served. When I got to the front, I placed my order and dug into my purse for some money, causing the people behind me to be agitated. Yep, I was that person.

Then I heard someone say, "Keep the change."

I looked up to see Scott standing there, "Thanks," I said, moving my hair behind my ear.

"Well, we wouldn't want you to be late for work. I'm pretty sure your boss is a stickler for punctuality." Then he gave me a wink and left. What was that?

I hurried to my car and drove to work. I parked and got out, walking into the building, but before I did, I noticed the name change, Stevens Inc. A bit arrogant, you think? What is with these guys and naming companies after themselves?

I just shook my head and rolled my eyes. I walked into the office and went to take my seat at my desk when I noticed the mound of work was missing, and so was my items. What in the world?

Then it hit me. Scott's firing me. That's was great. I put in three years into a company and working hard, only to be met with a pink slip, ugh.

I stood there and looked at the desk as I heard a female voice behind me, "Excuse me."

"Huh?"

"You're standing in front of my desk. It's my first day, and I don't want to make Mr. Stevens mad," she squealed.

I looked at her. She was a pretty little thing. She must have been no older than twenty-one. Of course. Why not hire someone younger?

I decided to chuck it in and go home. Maybe I could find a new job. As I started walking towards the door, I stopped. Nope, I refuse to go quietly. That's the problem; I'm so afraid of rocking the boat that I take it, take it, take it. Well, no more.

I turned on my heel and marched right into Mr. Stevens office. I was going to give him a piece of my mind, whether he liked it or not. If I was getting fired, then I was going to let it rip.

I marched into his office. He was sitting at his desk, typing at his computer.

"You! You! You!"

"I? I? I?" He looked up from the screen.

"I can't believe you're going to fire me!" I yelled.

"Excuse me?" He looked at me, confused, but I didn't care.

"How dare you come in here and take over a company then fire me? I am a damn good employee! I work my ass off!" I was raving like a lunatic as I pace while I yelled at him. "I have never called off sick! I don't dress like a slut! I do my job! Let me tell you I do it very well." I turned and pointed at him.

He stood up and crossed his arms.

"But hey, it doesn't matter if I'm a great employee. I mean, who gives a flaming shit if I am. I'm just another expendable employee. So screw you!" I was breathing hard.

"Are you done?" He asked me.

"Yep, I think that covers it," I said as I got my composure back.

"Okay, so now that you spoke your mind. Let me speak mine," Scott said as he walked from around his desk over to me. "I know you're a hard worker. I watched you this past week. I waited to see if you would blow up at me for all the work I gave you, but you never complained. You just worked. Through lunch. Coming in early and leaving late, all the while missing time with your daughter."

I stood there looking at him, a bit surprised.

"I've been reading up on your work performance and for the life of me can't understand why the old owner didn't promote you. So, I decided to offer you the position of my administrative assistant. Well, that's unless you feel the need for me to fire you," he said to me.

"Uh, no," I said, feeling embarrassed.

"I had someone pack up your items and move them to your office right next door to mine."

What popped out of my mouth was probably the dumbest thing ever.

"This isn't because, you know," I said to him.

He arched an eyebrow at me then rolled his eyes, "No."

"Good to know."

"Now Ms. Sherwood, since you're finish ranting and raving, I'm going to assume that you took medication that caused you to lose your mind for a moment. I'm also going to assume if you would like to keep your job, it probably is in your best interest to get to work."

"Right," I said as I turned and walked out of his office. I walked to the next door, which already had my name and title on it. I opened the door and stepped inside. I closed it.

"Hot damn!" Scott heard me yell and just chuckled as he went back to work.

********
Around lunchtime, I heard a knock at my door. I turned to see Mel is standing there, "Hey, Ms. Administrative Assistant."

"Hey," I replied. I couldn't help but smile.

"So, I hear someone went a bit looney tunes on the boss today," she smirked.

I sighed, "Yeah, not one of my better moments."

"Let's hope Miss Crazy Pants doesn't make a return visit," she winked, and I just laughed. "Let's go take lunch," she suggested. That was a fabulous idea if you ask me.

After lunch, the day went by a lot smoother except for Tabitha shooting me glares. I just shook my head.

When the day ended, I checked with Mr. Stevens to see if he needed anything before leaving. I pulled my coat on, "Did you need anything else?"

"No, I think I'm all set. Thanks."

"Okay. See you tomorrow," I said. I turned and walked away so I could head to my car. I had to go pick up Kami from Tara's.

Once I picked her up, we went home, and I made us some dinner. Then we settled onto the couch and watched a little tv before getting her ready for bed. I read her a couple of bedtime stories, then kissed her Goodnight.

After I made my way downstairs to clean up the kitchen before heading off to bed myself, that was until I heard a knock at the door. It's after nine. Who would be knocking at my door at this time of night?

I opened it, "Scott?"

"So, I was in the neighborhood and thought I would stop by. You know, to see how you liked your first day in your new position," he said casually.

"It was good. Thanks by the way, for not thinking I'm a complete lunatic after what I did."

"Well, we all act like a lunatic from time to time," he smiled. I just looked at him and shook my head.

"You want to come in and have a cup of coffee?"

"I don't want to impose," he shrugged.

"It's fine. I was cleaning up dishes from dinner before getting ready to call it a night. But we have to be a little quiet. Kami is asleep," I said to him.

"Oh, right," he said as he walked in and I closed the door. We walked into the kitchen, and I made coffee while he took a seat at the counter, and I started to clean up.

"So, how come you're out," I asked him.

"Thought I would get out of my place for a bit and figured I'd stop by. I didn't get a chance to talk to you at the end of the day," he said casually.

"Running a company does have that effect," I said as I loaded the dishwasher. Once I finish, I pulled out two mugs and poured coffee into each of them. Then I took them over to the counter. I placed one in front of Scott and held the other one.

"Yeah, but sometimes it's nice to have a break," he said, sipping his coffee. "Sort of like when I went out Friday night."

I didn't say anything when he said that. It still felt weird.

"My friends felt I needed to get out. Said I work too much and need to have some fun."

"I take it you don't go out much?"

"Not really, running a business is a lot of work and takes a lot of time. Plus, after being married to someone that sucked the life out of me made not want to date."

Whoa.

"I take it she wasn't special?"

"My ex is a blood-sucking leech. My ex's personality is of a flea. When we met, my ex seemed to like this incredible person. We dated and after we married, that's when I saw who she truly was. To say she put on a good show was an understatement. After a few years, I decided to call it quits. I couldn't take it, then one day she tells me she's pregnant. Not wanting to abandon an innocent child, I decided to stay until I found out she cheated on me," he explained.

That took me by surprise.

"We divorced, and it was nasty. My ex hired an equally nasty attorney. When we went in front of the judge, he sided with her. She pretty much got everything except my company. I had a prenup which she couldn't touch. Thank god. The only thing I wanted was the custody of my daughter. Again I got screwed, and the judge awarded her custody," he said to me. I stood there, not knowing what to say.

The only time I saw how evil exes could be is Kara's ex. To hear it from someone else really put things into perspective. I was lucky with Ben.

"I'm sorry you went through that," I said to him.

"I'm not because I got the best part out of that useless marriage, my daughter. Who I'm going to get custody of from my ex. I wanted to wait for this deal to go through and then have my attorney file for full custody. I hate not being able to see her because of her mother," he sighed.

"She doesn't let you see her?"

"Only when she needs something. Most of the time, she doesn't. It's a mess." I sipped my coffee as I listened. I felt for Scott. At least he was trying only to be denied. It gave me a whole new perspective on him.

It lost me in my thoughts; I didn't hear him get up and walk over to me.

"But let's not talk about that," he said, snapping me out of my thoughts. I turned to see him next to me. He took the coffee cup from my hand and set it down on the counter. Then he closed the gap between us. With my back to the countertop, he looked into my eyes.

"What would you say if I wanted to kiss you right now?"

My eyes widened as my lips parted, "I would say I would like that." My heart started to beat a mile a minute as he slowly leaned towards me. I closed my eyes just as he was about to kiss me, then I heard, "Mommy, I don't feel good!"

I opened my eyes and moved my face, "Be right there, baby." I turned back to him, "Sorry, I have to check on her."

"No, I admire that. I should go anyway," Scott said, taking a step back. I nodded and walked him to the door. After he left, I went and checked on Kami. Yep, she was sick all right. She got sick all over the place.

After cleaning up everything, I put her in my bed. It looks like I wasn't going to work tomorrow. Kami doesn't get sick often, and I didn't feel right leaving her with Ben, even though I know he would never object. His job was more lenient about Kami than mine.

I hope Scott understands. I don't want to lose my job, but my daughter comes first.
