Unlike what most people think Toby didn't try to be Clockwork's friend when they first met. In fact they hated each other, no scratch that they both wanted the other dead. They would constantly fight and argue and get in physical fights with each other. After a lot of convincing they tried to have a nice calm conversation with each other but that didn't really work out. But they learned to tolerate each other and then later on became friends
