CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

" she got horns like a devil, pointed at me and there's nowhere to run from the fire she breathes "

***

It was a few days after Olivia's encounter with Billy Andrews and school was back in session. Currently and much to Ollie's dismay, Anne, Diana, Ruby, Tillie, herself, Jane, and Josie were sitting in a circle on the floor of the classroom. Tillie had hung up a blanket and chairs so that they could have some privacy during lunch to talk about how Anne had gotten her period earlier that morning.

"Sh, not so loud." Josie laughs. "I got mine three months ago and I feel extremely mature," she smirks, leaning backward.

"You seem mature." Diana smiles at the blonde and Olivia has to stop herself from throwing up right then and there.

"You do." Tillie agrees, nodding her head.

"I think the boys take me more seriously too." She adds.

"But they can't tell..." Anne's face goes white. "Can they tell? That would be awful."

"Don't worry Anne, with how clueless they are about everything else I doubt they know," Ollie says, making the redhead smile in relief.

"Not tell per say," Josie starts. "But I'm not a little girl anymore and I believe that's noticeable." she pauses for a dramatic second. "My bosoms are growing." The girl states loudly.

Anne looks down at her own chest before looking back at Josie's. "Yet another reason why this is inexplicable."

"I got mine last year," Diana says.

"Me too," Tillie replies. "What about you Ollie?" She asks the brunette.

"I'd say around 6 months ago. When I told my mom she said that the next place we moved that I could have my own room since I was obviously growing up." She shrugs, taking a bite out of your cookie.

"Really?" Ruby asks her with red eyes.

"My father has started opening the door for me," The Barry girl smiles. "It's sweet."

"I can't wait until I can wear my hair up." Josie giggles but Ruby's sniffles grab their attention.

"Ruby, what's wrong?" Olivia asks the girl.

"I'm not a woman, why don't I have it?" She cries and Anne and Ollie both grimace.

"Trust me if I could give you mine I would," Anne scoffs. "This is so inconvenient!" She exclaims and the rest of the girls shush her.

"No one is supposed to know," Tillie leans in. "A woman's cycle is a shameful thing." This makes Olivia roll her eyes.

"That is stupid. Everyone came from a woman and I'm sure that someone's mother wanted her cycle but got a child instead, it's tragic really." She states matter of factly.

"Yeah." Anne agrees. "Why is it shameful?"

"It's unmentionable." Diana sighs. "That's why."

"That's not a reason," Anne argues and Josie rolls her eyes.

"Why don't you ever understand anything?" She snaps. Glaring at her, Olivia clenches her fist and tries to stop herself from punching the girl in her smug face.

"Marilla says it's God's plan, so doesn't that make it good?" the freckle-faced girl asks. "I mean, we can make a whole person." She holds her stomach and Olivia smiles. "Where's the shame in that?"

"Am I the only one who thinks she's out of her mind?" Josie asks the group.

"Yes Josie, you are. I wholeheartedly agree with Anne on this one." Ollie nods and her friend smiles at her.

"It's a secret, Anne." Diana says quietly. "That's just the way it is."

"Do boys have to contend with anything like this?" Anne questions the raven-haired girl.

"Boys have their own problems." She shrugs and Ruby keels, looking out of the window where there are grunts and yells.

"Why are they doing that?" She asks and the other girls look outside as well to see Billy hitting a tree stump with a branch and Moody kicking a small tree.

Tilting their heads, Olivia furrows her eyebrows. "I would ask but I think knowing would be even more disturbing so, I'm just gonna look away." She says, sitting back down. The others follow suit.

"When I get mine, I stay home from school because I don't want to have an accident." Tillie says, grimacing.

"Accident?" Anne asks, a mortified look on her face.

"There was a girl a few years ago who bled right through the back of her dress." Ruby tells them.

"I would die of mortification." The bolter girl states.

"The teacher called her up to the blackboard and everybody saw." The blonde finishes.

Noticing the look on her face, Olivia steps in. "But it's a one in one million chance of happening." She assures her friend.

"I don't know--" Hitting Ruby's arm she realizes what Ollie was doing and nods along.

"Yeah, totally."

"Now, who wants to go play kickball with me outside?" Olivia asks and everybody looks at her in shock.

"But it's the boys who are playing that," Josie says sharply. "And you're a girl."

"Well, I'm a girl who is about to kick their butts." She winks. "Anne, you with me?" She asks the girl who still looked pale in the face.

"Uh-" Anne takes a deep breath. "Actually yeah, I'll play."

"Good." Ollie turns back towards the other girls. "My offer still stands. You know where you can find me." Standing up, she grabs her friends hand and leads her to the field where there are a bunch of boys playing with a brown ball and sandbags as bases.

"Oh look, the dogs are here to stir up more trouble." Billy grumbles, glaring at Olivia.

"Actually, we're here to play." She vocalizes and he lets out a hearty laugh, the other boys joining in.

"That is hilarious, dog, tell another joke."

"The only other joke here is your face Billy so let us play." She crosses her arms and Anne does the same.

"You're too fragile to play with the big guys, go make someone a sandwich or something." He waves them off.

"Hey, Billy, just let them play." Gilbert butts in and Olivia smiles at him.

"But they'll suck." He protests.

"Then you can laugh at them. Until then, we'll take them on our team." He says, putting his cap under his arm.

"Fine, break something for all I care." He utters. "And don't expect us to go easy on you just because you're a girl." He snarls at Olivia.

"Wouldn't want it any other way." she sticks her tongue out at him, walking over to Gilbert.

"Are you sure you still want to play?" Gil asks her. "You can back out now."

"And why would I do that?" She raises her eyebrow.

"Because he's right. You could get hurt." He whispers.

"I'm not some damsel in distress, Gilbert." She snaps. "I know how to be the knight of my own story." Pushing past him, she walks over to the home base. Planting her feet, she places her hand on her knee and gets ready for the pitch.

"Don't screw up." Billy taunts and he flings the ball forward but it goes too far off to the left for Olivia to kick it so she throws it back. "What? The ball to dirty for your girly hands?" Snickering, he rolls the ball again.

"That's cute." She states as it leaves his hand. "Hey Billy, I know you have one shiner from me but who gave you the broken nose?" She runs forward and kicks the ball so hard that it line drives right into his face. He falls to the ground and cries out in pain as Olivia runs for first base.

"What are you doing?" Moody yells to him. "Get up and grab the ball!" All he does though is lay on the ground with tears forming in his eyes as Ollie rounds second.

"Oh my gosh, I think she's going to get a home run." Josie says in astonishment from inside the school. While the two friends went to go play, the girls went to the window to watch.

As Olivia heads to third base, Billy gets up, one hand still clutching his bloody nose but he grabs the ball and stumbles forward. It isn't until Olivia is two steps away from home that he throws the ball for her head but she easily slides under it and right onto base.

"Safe!" Gilbert exclaims and the boys from her team all pat her on the back but Charlie gives her a hug.

"That was amazing Olivia!" He says, pulling away. "You should play with us more often."

Gilbert walks up to her and ruffles her hair. "Amazing as always, Fontaine."

Turning around to Billy, she smirks. "I guess the answer to my question was me."
