CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

||do it like a dude||

" i can do it like a brother, do it like a dude "

***
That morning, the Gillis family was divided among three families and Ruby made a very rude scene when she found out she would be staying with Anne. Diana and Olivia were quick to tell her how it didn't matter what the other girls at school though, it only mattered what she did. Olivia and her family had gone home that day to sleep in and get ready for the next since the boys in the Fontaine family had to go back to the Gillis house and help with repairs.

Instead of staying at home all day, Ollie decided to stop by the Cuthbert's since Anne and Ruby were planning on baking some biscuits for the boys who were busy working on Ruby's house. By the time Olivia got there, they had just started working on the dough.

"Olivia!" Anne exclaims, giving her a hug. "Ruby and I have already started on our batch but you're welcome to start one of your own." She mentions to a bunch of ingredients on the counter along with a recipe.

Nodding, the girl washes her hands and begins cooking. "So, Ruby," she looks to the blonde girl while pouring the right amount of flour into a bowl. "Why did Josie start dating Gilbert if she knew you liked him?"

Frowning, the small girl shrugs. "I guess she wasn't as good of a friend as I thought." She says quietly.

"How come you didn't confront her?" Olivia questions, whisking her ingredients together.

"I guess I just didn't want to start anything with her." Ruby sighs. "You saw how she treated you when you didn't even do anything to her."

"Unfortunately yes I do know." Ollie rolls her eyes. "It was so stupid, all I did was walk with the boy." She grumbles.

"Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I was the one who saw you two walking and I told Josie about it but I didn't know she would take it so far." The Gillis girl says, her voice full of shame.

"You can't be accountable for Josie's actions, that was all her." She shrugs. "Um Anne, is this what the dough is supposed to look like?" Ollie asks her friend. Her white dough had turned oddly stiff.

"Try putting it in the oven, maybe it will soften." Anne shrugs and the dark-haired girl does just that. Splitting it into 12 circles, she places it on a tray and puts it into the oven and adds wood to the fire.

2 hours later the girls had their scones and biscuits and put them into baskets to take to Ruby's residence. The three girls walked to the house that was under construction. The boys and men had gotten far on it in the short time they had been working.

Walking into the front lawn, they offer a scone to the minister who happily takes one and Anne gives some to the men around him. Running over to her father, she gives him and her brother a hug.

"What are you doing here scout?" Her dad asks, his eyes drifting to the basket in her hands.

"We made snacks for everyone." Olivia smiles, passing one to them.

Charles and Isaac grab them from her grip and they take a bite but their teeth don't even make it past the outer layer. "Um Ol, are they supposed to be this hard?" Isaac asks, grimacing.

"Probably not." She shrugs, walking back to Ruby and Anne.

Looking around, her eyes land on Jerry and she gives him a hug. "How is everything going?" She asks him.

"Pretty good, most of the damage was on the second floor and I'm working on the first floor so I have less to do." He chuckles.

"Hey look, it's the freaks and their new twin sister." She hears from above her and she looks up to see Billy smirking down at the girls and Gilbert standing next to them.

"As long as they bring food, I don't care if it's Quasimoto." Gilbert says, hammering a board. Ruby starts to walk forward but lands on her face.

Billy starts laughing as he turns to Gilbert. "That was great."

Olivia bends down to Ruby's eye level as she sits on the ground, crying. "Ruby, are you alright?" She doesn't answer.

"Girls are so useless." Billy comments as Gil goes to stand next to him.

"Yeah kind of like your input on things." Ollie glares at him.

"Guess you should've stayed home in the kitchen, eh?" He says to the Gillis girl, ignoring Olivia.

"What is wrong with you?" Anne loudly exclaims at the boy.

"Go home, and bake cookies." He yells back.

"Headline, they already did." Gilbert says in an obvious tone.

"If I remember correctly this is Ruby's property," Olivia says to him. "Or did your tiny brain have too much crap stored in it that you forgot?"

"Why don't you shove off and leave the men to their work." He snaps.

"Why don't you give me that hammer and I'll shove it right up your—" Jerry grabs her by the arm.

"Okay, Okay, why don't you share some of your biscuits with them." He winks and Olivia gets an idea.

"Yes, sorry Billy, you're right. Here, you can have some of these that I made." She holds back any insults as she walks closer to the house.

"Toss one up here, or can't you throw?" He laughs and Olivia smiles sweetly.

"I guess we'll see, won't we?" She asks and then throws her rock hard pastry right at his face. It hits him with so much force that he falls backward. "Whoops." She grins then turns back to Ruby who is still sitting on the ground.

She can hear the laughter and shouts from the people around her and she does a small courtesy. It's then that she notices Gilbert next to her, grabbing Ruby by the arm and helping her to her feet.

"You alright?" He asks, picking up her hat and wiping the leaves off of it. "Here you are." He says as he hands it to her and he looks at Olivia. "Nice throw."

Forcing a smile, she thanks him and looks to Anne. "Thank you, Gilbert." Ruby says, awestruck.

"Yeah of course," he smiles. "Thanks for coming by to help feed the beasts." Looking at Olivia again, she realizes her brother is walking over to them with Mr. Cuthbert next to him and she silently thanks them for saving her from the awkward encounter.

"Much obliged," Matthew says to Anne and the other two girls and Isaac gives his sister a bear hug.

"That's my tough little sister." He chuckles, ruffling her hair and Olivia quickly swats his hand away.

"Matthew, will you bring the baskets home later?" Anne asks him.

"Well I better, if I know what's good for me." He jokes and Gilbert scratches the back of his head uncomfortably.

"Um," he starts but then changes his mind and looks at Olivia with wide eyes.

"Come on Ruby, let's get you home." Anne says, taking her friend by the shoulder while Billy groans from the metal station where a wrench won't turn.

Smirking, Ollie walks over to him and shoves him out of the way, yanking on the tool which makes it fully turn around. Winking, she runs over to her friends and leaves an angry Billy, a proud brother, and a grinning Gilbert.
