CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

" you and me got chemistry "

***

The walk to school that morning was painfully cold since the snow that flowed in the freezing wind would not stop its heavy fall. The white flakes piled up until it was past Olivia's shins and seeping through her boots. The day had not started out well either considering the fact that she woke up late and had to try and run through the snow to make it on time.

In summary, she was not in the mood for anyone's crap. As she walked into the schoolroom, Anne ran up to her. "Oh Olivia, it's awful. Mrs. Barry won't let us talk to Diana anymore." She breathes in a panic. "Can I please sit by her today so we can have one last moment of friendship before it is ripped from our grasp and thrown into eternal misery?"

Laughing, Olivia nods. "Of course, Anne. I'll sit with Ruby today." Walking to her desk for the day, she looks over to where Gilbert's seat is only to find it empty. Frowning, she sets her belongings down.

"Ollie!" Ruby exclaims as she goes to do the same. "What a nice surprise." She smiles at her friend.

"I'm glad I get to sit with you today," She grins, leaning forward to whisper in Ruby's ear. "I really do prefer you over Josie."

Leaning away, Ruby giggles. "I would have to agree." Mr. Phillips walks out of the extra room that was in the building and gets everyone to sit down. All of the sudden Mr. Phillips walks over to where Anne and Diana sit and talk and he slams down Diana's school supplies.

"You are not to fraternize or exert undue influence." He spits at Anne who looks up at him with a horrified look.

"Olivia, switch back your place with Diana." He turns to walk away but then stops, glaring at Ollie. "And don't talk to her either, one bad influence is enough so we don't need you adding to it." A series of gasps ring through the classroom and Anne and Diana helplessly look at each other. They grab each other's hands before Diana and Olivia trade seats.

Later at lunch, Diana and Anne drag the Fontaine girl to a storage closet. "Will your mother never relent?" Anne asks her friend.

"I've cried and cried and told her over and over again that it wasn't your guys' fault, but there's no use." Diana says sadly.

"So this is an eternal farewell?" Anne cries.

"This is ridiculous. Anne had no idea that it was wine and not cordial." Olivia says, frustrated with the situation.

"We must speak the most pathetic language we can think of." Anne states, taking a deep breath.

"With thee's and thou's?" Ollie asks to get clarification from her redheaded friend and the girl nods.

"That way we will never forget the importance of this moment." She states and puts her pinky finger up. Diana and Olivia do the same, locking theirs together. "Oh Diana, will thou promise faithfully never to forget us, the friends of your youth?" Anne asks her.

"I'll never have any other bosom friends," Diana cries. "I don't want to. I could never love anyone else as I love you Anne Shirley-Cuthbert and Olivia Dior Fontaine."

"Wait," Anne look at her in shock. "You love me?"

"Of course I do." Diana states as if it's the most obvious thing in the world. "I love you both so much, why didn't you know that?"

"I love you too, Diana." Olivia says as tears escape from her eyes and she quickly wipes them with her free hand.

"I knew you liked me of course, but I never hoped you love me." Anne says happily.

"I love you too, Anne." Ollie adds and Anne looks at her in amazement. "We love you devotedly."

"I will always love thee, Diana and Ollie." Anne sniffles. "In the years to come your memory will shine like a star over my lonely life."

"We should offer each other locks of our hair so that we can treasure it evermore," Olivia says, grabbing a pair of scissors from the extra desk that sits in there. Grasping a strand of her hair, she cuts through it and hands it to Diana. "Since Anne and I are still allowed to converse she will not need one, unless you would like one, Anne?"

"I would be so grateful for it, I can put it in a beautiful box with Diana's so that I will always remember the long and flowing hair of my two bosom friends." Anne nods and Olivia cuts another piece, handing it to Anne.

She takes Diana's black hair and cuts two locks, doing the same with Anne's.

"I bestow upon thou, these symbols of our enduring love." The redhead says, clutching the hair and Diana's hand.

"Fare thee well." Diana sucks in a breath. "Dearest Anne of Green Gables and Olivia of Evergreen Manor. Henceforth, we must be strangers living side by side." There's a moment of silence before all three girls throw themselves into a sad and blubbering group hug. Eventually, they have to split up and they give each other separate hugs before going back to their seats, forcing themselves to act like the others don't exist.

After the sad day, Olivia goes to leave the classroom but Mr. Phillips stops her. "Take these lessons to Gilbert Blythe." He snaps his fingers at her, throwing the books into her arms. "He'll be missing class for a time and I don't want him falling too far behind, he's my best student."

"Why is he missing class?" Olivia asks him.

"That is none of your concern." He snaps. "Now hurry along." When Ollie doesn't move Mr. Phillips glares at her. "Scat."

Rolling her eyes, she walks to her jacket and throws that and her boots on. Realizing she doesn't know where Gilbert lives, she walks up to Ruby. "I have to turn in a few books to Gilbert, can you direct me to where he lives?" She asks the girl.

"Sure!" Ruby exclaims. "It's by the cemetery, he lives on the north side of the lake that we all went to before the end of summer."

"Thank you." Olivia smiles, shrugging the books higher up in her arms and setting off for the Blythe home.

As Olivia trudged through the snow, she could feel her ears and fingers freezing even though they were covered by a hat and gloves. At one point, she didn't even know where the road that she was supposed to be following was and she fell down into the snow with a defeated groan.

"You alright miss?" A voice that had a partial British accent asked Olivia after her 5th minute of laying in the cold snow.

Raising her head, she's met with a girl with dark skin and curly hair. Hattie. "Hattie?" She asks.

"Sorry, do I know you?" Hattie asks, furrowing her eyebrows.

"I'm Olivia Fontaine. Isaac Fontaine's sister." The young girl says, jumping up and extending her arm. When Hattie takes her hand Ollie shakes it vigorously. "You would not believe how amazing it is to finally meet you. Isaac told me all about you, he's really smitten did you know? I see why, you're very pretty." She notices that she still was shaking the older woman's hand and she smiles sheepishly at her. "Sorry, that was an odd amount of time to shake one's hand."

"No I'm just as excited to meet you." Hattie grins. "Isaac wanted to set up a time that we all could meet together for but I'll have to tell him that that's not necessary anymore." She laughs, tucking a curl behind her ear. "Why were you sitting in the snow?"

"I've been trying to find the Blythe home but I got lost." Ollie grumbles.

"Oh, I go to the Blythe's all of the time to visit Jon." The dark-skinned girl smiles. "Let me walk you there."

"That is amazing, thank you so much." Olivia squeals, giving Hattie a hug before they begin their walk to Gilbert's house.

Eventually, they come across a smaller house bordered by trees and fences.

"Here we are, the Blythe homestead." Hattie says, leading Ollie to the front door.

Olivia stops and takes a deep breath and knocks on the glass window. Taking a step back, she waits. No one answers so she knocks again. When no one comes, she rolls her eyes. As she's about to turn around and tell Mr. Phillips the next day how Gilbert wasn't there for her to give his books to, the door opens.

"Finally," she mumbles but realizes that it's not Gilbert.

"Sorry to make you wait." An older and very sick looking man says, leaning on the wall for support.

"Mr. Blythe, you should be in bed." Hattie scolds him, grabbing his arm so that she can help him stand upright.

"Gilbert is out back chopping wood." He heaves. "I had to get the door so you ladies wouldn't just be standing outside in the cold."

"Oh, Jon." Hattie rolls her eyes.

"What beautiful raven hair." Jon stops, staring at it. Furrowing his eyebrows, he finally gets a good look at Olivia. "You're the Fontaine daughter, right? The little girl of Grace?"

"You know my mother?" Ollie asks in shock.

"Knew," Jon sighs, looking down in...sadness? "and that was a long time ago."

"How di-" Olivia's question is cut off by Gilbert.

"Dad." He exclaims, running to help Hattie hold him up. "What are you doing? You shouldn't be walking."

"My son worries too much." Mr. Blythe lets out a small laugh and he turns to Gilbert. "It seems this lady has urgent business with you. I'll go inside now."

"I'll fetch you a chair." Gilbert moves forward but his father stops him.

"No, I'll go." Jon pats Gilbert's chest. "Hattie can help me, thank you son." He gives Olivia a small wink and Hattie helps him into the house.

Gilbert turns to Olivia with a confused look on his face. "Those for me?" He asks, mentioning to the books in her arms.

"Oh uh- yes." Olivia nods, passing them to Gilbert.

"Well, it was very kind of you to bring them by." He smiles, tilting his head.

"Mr. Phillips doesn't want you falling behind I suppose." She shrugs, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear.

"I don't either." He shakes his head and then lets out a small laugh. "If you're going to beat me in class, I want you to do it fair and square."

"Please Blythe, we both know that I can beat you no matter the circumstances." Ollie teases him and he rolls his eyes.

"Sure you could Fontaine." They have a moment of silence before Gilbert clears his throat. "Well thank you for the books. I'll see you."

"Right." She nods. "I'll see you."

A: I don't think I'm a reliable source to deliver a baby 😂

Gilbert-
Q: why are you dating Josie?
A: she actually wants to be seen with me instead of some people

Q: why are you so flipping hot?
A: I haven't taken my temperature lately but I don't think I have a fever?

Q: Josie or Ollie?
A: I think we all know the answer to that

Q: how are you?
A: I'm doing quite well, how are you?

Q: How do you feel about school? Also, I love you.
A: I actually really enjoy school, learning new things are my favorite part. I love you too I suppose?

Q: Do you see a future with Ollie?
A: I could see one but we'd have to actually make up in order to be together but I'm not sure that's going to happen so soon.

Anne-
Q: Teach me how to get more freckles.

Q: Who would you pick to be your life mate?
A: I suppose it all depends on who I feel closest to and since i only have two people I'm close with, I would say either Diana or Olivia.

Q: do you see a future of you becoming a teacher or a writer?
A: You know, I could see myself being both. Maybe I'll be a world renowned author who sells thousands of copies of books while staying in the comfort of Avonlea and teaching the young children on how to live as amazingly as they can.

Q: I love you my scrumptious muffin and have made a great acquaintance with you so please do my honor and marry me.

Q: does Jerry like Olivia as more than just a friend?
A: he has a small crush on her because she's pretty (kind of like how Jerry likes Diana in season 2) but otherwise they're just two French besties

Jerry-
Q: Thoughts on Diana?

Q: I love you. Love me back?
A: well duh :)

A: maybe if we were the last two people on earth and all of the goats were dead

Q: do you want to marry me?
A: why sure

Grace-
Q: why did you tell Ollie that she couldn't talk to Gilbert?
A: I'd rather not talk about it...

Charles-
Q: what is it like to be an awful dad?
A: Isaac and Olivia have food on their plate and a roof over their head. I don't see how thats awful of me.

A: No...should I?

Josie-
Q: will you ever be nice to Ollie?
A: why would I do that?

Ruby-

A: He's handsome, and kind, and an amazing person

Billy-
Q: what makes you not like Ollie?
