" love at first sight if that exists at all "

"DODO,  L'EFANT DO,

L'enfant dormira bien vite

Dodo, l'enfant do

L'enfant dormira bientôt."

(Sleepytime, the young one sleeps, The child will sleep very soon sleepy time, the young one sleeps, The child will sleep oh, so soon.) Olivia sings as she walks through the forest leading to the school.

It was the second day and she was beyond excited to see Anne again. Just like yesterday, Anne promised to wait for her by the school. It was only a matter of minutes before Olivia got to see her best friend again-though she just had the day before.

As Olivia passes by a large pine tree, Billy walks out in front of her, causing her to stumble back to be sure she wouldn't run into him.

"Olivia Fontaine," he says stingy, walking closer to her. "You and I need to have a chat."

Billy moves closer and closer, making Olivia feel very uncomfortable so she takes a step back each step forward he takes.

"What do you want Billy?" She glares at the blonde, trying to hide the fact he's scaring her.

"You said some pretty nasty stuff to me yesterday."

"Well, I think I'm obliged to say that right back at you." Olivia says, clenching her teeth.

"That was just child's play yesterday, dear Ollie." He taunts, taking another step.

"Only my friends call me Ollie." She grits through her teeth.

"Oo, you've got some nerve don't ya, you little rugrat." He flinches forward and Olivia jumps back, dropping her things. He lets out a loud laugh, pushing her backward.

Olivia hits the ground with a 'thump' and she feels the sting of her palm landing on pinecones.

"Hey Billy," a voice calls out, drawing the boys attention to behind him. There stands a boy with dark hair and scarves thrown around his neck. He carries a satchel and moves to the pair. "How's it going?"

"Hey, Gilbert." Billy states blandly.

"Man, it's-um-good to be back." Olivia mentally thanks the boy that Diana mentioned as he just saved her from being 'taught a lesson'.

"Uh-" Billy looks to Olivia giving her a warning glare. "Yeah, welcome back."

Olivia stays where she sits on the ground, not even moving from the rock that jabs into her back, sending painful shocks through her body.

"Yeah, yeah, it's good to see you, buddy." Gilbert says, giving Billy a firm handshake. "You guys are playing a game right?" He looks briefly over to the girl.

"Well it looks fun but we should probably get to school, eh?" He says to Billy in more of a commanding tone. "Hate to be tardy. Mr. Phillips sure gets his dander up about that."

"Yeah. I was just about to get going." Olivia can see him clench his fist and he turns to her. "See you there." He taunts, turning around and heading for school.

Olivia looks to Gilbert in awe before realizing that she's been looking at him too long. "You alright, miss?" Gilbert asks her and she quickly swipes her stuff from off the ground beside her.

Gilbert grabs her arm and helps her up. She lets out an almost inaudible 'thanks' before taking off the way Billy just went.

"You're welcome," Gilbert says as she pushes past him. "You need anything else? Any dragons around here need slaying?"

"No, I'm good. Thank you though!" Olivia calls over her shoulder as she quickens her pace.

"Who are you?" She hears him yell to her but she ignores him and keeps moving. All she wanted to do now is get to Anne and get the day over already. "Hey, who are you?" She hears again before leaves crunching under pressure.

Olivia gets out of the woods and begins her trek to school. "Uh, miss?"

She rolls her eyes. Can't this boy catch a hint? "What's your name?"

"Miss?" He asks, again.

Olivia keeps ignoring him before he finally jogs to her side. "What? Can't tell me your name?"

"Ollie." She says harshly, stopping her walking. Gilbert still walks forward before he realizes she's not next to him and shuffles back.

"Ollie?" He asks, raising his eyebrow.

"That's what I just said, ain't it?" She sasses, moving her legs again. "It's Olivia but people call me Ollie."

"Well, that's a pretty name, Ollie." He smiles, looking to her.

"Only my friends call me Ollie though." She says, looking straight forward.

"But you just told me it was Ollie?" He furrows his eyebrows in confusion.

"Yes, it's Ollie, but only my friends call me Ollie and you. are. not. one." She lets out with a final huff.

"Well, I did just save you from Billy Andrews so I think that deserves a little recognition." He puts on a goofy smile and Olivia can't help but think how cute he is.

Guess Diana was right after all. "Your efforts were greatly appreciated." She shrugs.

"Greatly appreciated? Really?" He lets out a laugh. "That's the best you can come up with?"

"It's greatly appreciated or nothing." She snaps and he puts his hands up in defense.

"Greatly appreciated it is." Olivia and Gilbert walk side-by-side in silence before he breaks that, making Olivia internally groan.

"I haven't seen you around here before."

"I suppose that was for good reason." She rolls her eyes again.

"Am I really that bad to be around?" He asks, faking hurt.

"Yes," she nods, shrugging. "You're also terrible to look at."

"Wow, now that stings." He frowns.

"Could you please leave me alone in peace?" She groans and he laughs.

"Well that just makes me want to talk to you even more!" Olivia says nothing but walks faster, trying to get away from him.

"Cmon olivia, talk to me." He says, running to catch up. Again, olivia says nothing.

They make it to the school and as olivia is about to open the door, Gilbert does it for her.

"Thank you." She says, sighing.

"It was my pleasure." He gives her a genuine smile. The two take a moment to just look at each other before a group of boys run up to Gilbert pulling him away from her.

Olivia turns around and goes out to the stream to put her milk in it. As she stands back up the girls walk towards her, Josie giving Olivia a mean glare.

"I don't know what you think you were doing walking with Gilbert Blythe." She snarls.

"I-" Olivia is cut off by Diana.

"You can't talk to Gilbert Blythe."

"You can't even look at him." Tillie adds on.

"Ruby has liked him for three years." Josie puts her arm around the girl. "She has dibs." She turns to Ruby. "There there, that nasty girl didn't know any better."

"If you would let me speak, Josie," Olivia says, annoyed. "I have absolutely no interest in Gilbert Blythe. In fact, I tried to get AWAY from him." Olivia looks at Ruby's tear-stained face.

"I really don't care for him, I wasn't planning on talking to him anyways so I have no problem with it." She shrugs and Josie gives Olivia a dirty look before walking away with Ruby and Tillie.

Diana stays behind along with Anne. "I'll try to smooth things over with them," Diana says hopelessly.

"I'm pretty sure you said that yesterday and nothing came out of it." Olivia mumbles as she walks away to join the other girls.

"Why must Gilbert Blythe get me into so much trouble?" Olivia huffs.

All the while this was going on, Gilbert was inside, talking to his friends.

"Why were you walking with that Fontaine girl?" Charlie asks Gilbert as he takes off his cap.

"Why not?" Gilbert asks, confused.

"Everyone knows she's a loon." He says as if stating the most obvious thing ever.

"And she's friends with that orphan girl." Moody adds on.

"Hope you didn't get any asylum cooties." Charlie laughs.

"Uh oh-there's one." Gilbert jokes, flicking Charlie on the face.

"Besides, I don't care where's she's from or what her pasts like," Gilbert says. "A cute girl is a cute girl."
