CHAPTER FIVE

||always be together||

" we'll be friends for life "

***
AFTER AN EVENTFUL LUNCH when the girls whom Anne and Olivia had met that morning left the two of them alone when they heard a tragic story about Anne's past, Diana had tried to get them to the be friends with the two girls again. The girls had wondered why Olivia didn't come with them as they left a heartbroken Anne.

The truth was Olivia didn't care about someone's past. She wasn't one to judge what a person had been through, especially since her past wasn't perfect either. The most important thing, Olivia thought, was what someone was like in their heart.

Right away she could tell that Josie had a soulless, black, heart, for she didn't care wether or not she hurt Anne's feelings. Olivia also had a feeling the other girls only went along with such a cruel act was because Josie was the 'it' girl-and God forbid anyone who disrespected the 'it' girl.

Something rare about Olivia was that she would rather be unpopular and hated with one best friend, than she would be popular and loved with only fake friends. It was a quality that she found not many of the school girls had here in Avonlea.

Why? She could never understand. She had only been here a few days and already she found that all anyone ever did was gossip and judge. Hadn't any of these people ever heard the phrase 'don't judge a book by its cover'?

Alas she just made sure to never let the talk of the town decide her opinion for her. Kind of like how Diana said that this Gilderoy Blake was dreamy. She'll decide that for herself.

Now, the first day was over and Diana said she was going to walk home partway with the girls. As they walked through the forest, reaching a fork in the pathway Diana put a hand on Olivia and Anne's shoulder, she reassured them that the girls would come around.

Olivia highly doubted that but she knew that Anne really wanted them to. "Maybe talk a bit less," Diana said to Anne and Olivia furrowed her eyebrows. How talkative Anne was,was what made her Anne. Olivia knew that she wouldn't have it any other way.

Diana gave the two girls hugs goodbye and Olivia started walking again. When she realized that Anne wasn't next to her, she turned around to see her take the flowers out of her hat and let them flutter to the forest floor. Olivia sighed and held her hand out for Anne to take. She does just that and the two girls walk off towards green gables.

"Hey Jerry!" Olivia calls out to the boy in the barn. Anne and her had just made it back and as Anne walked straight into the house, Olivia turned and made her way toward their friend.

"Hallo Olivia." He smiles, stopping what he's doing.

"Jerry if you call me by my first name one more time, I'll slap you." Olivia glares at him and he throws his arms up in self defense.

"Sorry Ollie."

"You better be." She rolls her eyes. "Matthew! May I steal Jerry for a few minutes?" She asks the man.

"Why, I suppose so." He nods, taking Jerry's fork.

Olivia grabs Jerry's arm and drags him towards the chicken coop, throwing a thank you over her shoulder to a chuckling Matthew. Olivia runs past the chickens and climbs to the roof of their hen-house, Jerry following suit.

"Now we have to make this quick since I have to leave for supper but all we really learned today was how to spell a couple words." Jerry nods. "So I'll teach you to spell the three easiest words we learned."

"Okay the first one is scrumptious." She says. "It's an alternate word for delicious."

"Skumtious." He repeats and Olivia shakes her head.

"Scrumptious." She repeats.

"Is what I said. Skumtious." Jerry nods.

"Whatever, let's show you how to spell it." Olivia sighs. "S-c-r-u-m-p-t-i-o-u-s." She writes on her black board. "Now you."

Jerry takes the board and copies the letters down from Olivia's turn in messy and scribbley writing.

"Well I see I'll have to teach you to improve your penmanship next." Olivia says, raising her eyebrow as she tries to tell which letter is which.

"Pemeship?" Jerry asks in confusion.

"Yes, penmanship. It means your handwriting." Olivia says, wiping the board clean. "Now write it by yourself."

Jerry grabs the black board and chalk and begins writing. When he's finished, Olivia checks it over. "Well done Jerry!"

"Thank you." He smiles at her.

An idea suddenly pops into her head. Quickly, she jumps down from the hen-house and runs inside. "Marilla! Could Anne and Jerry come over to evergreen for supper with me?" Olivia asks the old maid.

"Will your folks be alright with it?" Marilla questions so that later on she wouldn't receive word that the two weren't invited.

"Oh sure! They love Anne and have been dying to meet Jerry."

"Sure then, make sure to have them back before dark." Marilla nods. Olivia lets out an excited squeal and bounds up the stairs to Anne's room.

Bursting through her door she tells Anne the news. "You and Jerry can come over for supper!" Anne grabs her hat and coat and runs out to Jerry who is still sitting, dumbfounded, on the hen-house.

"Where are we going?" Jerry asks as the two burst past him.

"Supper at my house." Olivia says and she hears the 'thump' of Jerry jumping down, following them.

"Why aren't we working on the schoolwork you brought home?" He questions.

"Because you can't spell and Anne doesn't know how to do long division so i'm going to take you to my special thinking place." Olivia shrugs, walking past the front gate.

"Where's that?" Jerry asks.

"You'll see."

After a 20 minute walk the three of them come to the cliff Olivia came to on her first day here. The sun looked beautiful as it partially hid behind the clouds and Olivia could feel a small breeze run through her dress, blowing it slightly.

"Now, who's ready to get their studying on?"
