Chapter Thirty Six

To say I was euphoric was an understatement.

With a cat like stretch, I turned my head to the side to find Mason's innocent face sleeping peacefully. Drinking him in, I couldn't fight the smile that overtook my lips.

I was happy. My wolf was happy.

After checking the time, I hated having to wake him up, but I had to get back home before my parents woke up and I had no other way of getting there. I thought about running and I know my wolf would have loved that, but there wasn't enough time. My parents were both early risers and today was going to be filled with enough questions, I didn't need to be grounded for eternity for sleeping at a guy's house.

Yes, I decided today was the day I was going to tell them about Mason.

There was no point in putting off the inevitable and it seemed like the perfect time, especially now that his parents knew about us. "Mason." I whispered softly, stroking his arm with the tips of my fingers.

I was surprised I was able to sleep next to him and have no uncontrollable urge to jump him, but Mason explained to me that because he had marked me, the heat was subsided for a little while; my wolf being satisfied enough for now.

For now, being the important part. Sooner or later we would run out of ways to cool our wolves down.

"Mason." I tried again, this time placing a kiss on his lips. He stirred, but his eyes remained closed. This dude could really sleep.

Lightly shaking him, I called his name several more times before I finally received a response. "No baby, go back to sleep."

I chuckled. "We can't, I have to go home."

"Ring Bella." He sighed. Did he want Bella to pick me up and take me home? "No," He shook his head, dragging out the word. My question had been voiced in his head. "Tell her to call them and make up an excuse."

That wasn't happening; Bella had already covered for me enough as it was. "I can't do that, I need to go." I kissed him once more before moving towards the edge of the bed.

To be honest, I hated the fact I had to leave. There was nothing I wanted more than to stay in bed all day with my mate and be spoilt with kisses, but that couldn't happen yet.

Yet being the important part.

Groaning, he sat up letting the soft, thin sheet that had covered us slip from his body. Holy crap. My eyes refused to remove themselves from his broad shoulders, muscular arms and toned torso. What did snap my attention away, was his deep chuckle. "Like what you see, little kitten?" He asked, his voice seductive.

You know how people say a guy's voice first thing in the morning is the sexiest thing? They were absolutely right.

"Eh," I waved my hand, "I've seen better." I was lying of course, and the manic butterflies attacking my stomach were quick to remind me of that.

In fact, I think I drooled a little.

"Oh yeah," He slid his body across the bed, placed his hand on my hip and his chin on my right shoulder. "Your scent tells me different." He whispered in my ear, his lips brushing my lobe. There was nothing but confidence in his words, he knew exactly what he did to me.

The jerk.

Moving his head to my other shoulder, he positioned himself so that his body was pressed against my back and his head was now resting over my left shoulder. He ran his hand up my arm and neck and tilted my head back until it rested on his shoulder. "That scent drives me crazy." His voice was strained and husky, but that wasn't the only thing that told me he was turned on.

His lips found their way to my mark and he began dropping small kisses on the spot which was still a little tender. But no matter how lost in him I was, the sensible Rainie was still present in the back of my head.

Stupid sensible Rainie.

With an unhidden groan, I reluctantly pulled away from his hypnotizing touch. "I really have to go."

Letting me stand and move away from him, he edged himself to the end of the bed and rested his elbows on his knees. "Can you look away, please?" I asked, feeling embarrassment fill my body like hot lava.

I hadn't expected to spend the night, so pyjamas weren't exactly available and I couldn't sleep in my clothes. Mason had lent me a shirt, but the jerk picked out the shortest, most revealing shirt he could.  After half an hour of reluctance, I realised I wasn't going to win and had no other option but to put the damn shirt on.

In a pitch black room with a sheet covering my modesty I didn't really care. Now, standing with nothing to shield my body and the bright morning sun ripping through the blinds, I was on complete show and he was taking full advantage of that.

I could feel his eyes all over my body. I could feel the heat in them and how they wandered over every inch of my bare legs, slowly and hungrily. "Stop that." I scolded, slipping my feet into my jeans and wiggling my butt until they were at my waist.

"Stop what?" He asked, innocently.

Innocent, I scoffed. "You know what, you pervert." I said playfully, my fake scowl perfectly in place.

"What, this?" He cocked his head to the side, watching my reaction to the image he had just placed in my mind.

Dear God.

If I felt hot off his stare, that was nothing compared to how I felt now. My traitorous cheeks heated almost instantly and my heart drummed with the pace of a puma.

"Is that what you're talking about?" Again, he faked innocence. Standing from the bed, he let the sheet slip away from him giving me full view of his body. He was wearing boxers, but even they were hanging dangerously low, showing off that incredible 'V'.

Throughout all of this, I came up with one conclusion. He wanted to kill me.

His head fell back with laughter. "Sweetheart, I don't want to kill you." He smirked. "I just want you to see what's yours."

Yeah, he definitely wanted to kill me.

Now stood inches from me, his hands found their way from my hips to the small of my back as he pulled me into his body. "Do you like what you see?" For some reason, I knew he wasn't joking anymore. His voice was too serious for that.

"I love what I see." I answered honestly. Who wouldn't?

That handsome, boyish smile danced on his lips. "Well, I'm all yours, mate." My heart rate spiked at just that one word.

* * *

Tiptoeing through the back door was the scariest thing I've ever done.

Though I realised that was a piece of cake once my eyes landed on the figure sitting at the table, sipping coffee and reading the morning newspaper. "Hi," I almost chocked on my breath. "Bella had to drop me off early because I forgot to take clothes for today and I had to make it back here before school, but I didn't want to wake you so I just--" My lie was cut off, by the holding up of a hand.

"Why don't we start again and this time, with the truth." My dad said, his tone anything but light and happy.

Crap.

Kicking out the chair opposite him with his foot, I didn't wait for the verbal invitation.

Oh God. Oh God.

My hands fidgeted on my lap and I could feel the creeping moist on my palms. "I don't need to ask you whether you stayed out last night, what I do need to ask is where you stayed, and let's not keep up the pretence that you were at Bella's."

If it was possible for my body to burst into flames and my heart to drop out through stomach and to the floor, then I would say it's just happened. "Dad, I..."

"Rainie." He warned, knowing I was going to try one last attempt at defending my lie.

My head lowered. He would kill me if he found out where I had been, how could I tell him? "Does this have something to do with Alpha Vermont?"

My eyes snapped to his. "What?"

The corner of his eyes crinkled a little. "Sweetie, I may not be a spring chicken, but I'm not senile just yet." He leaned forward on the table, resting his elbows on the hard wood.

Taking a breath so deep, my head felt light. "He's my mate." I said the words so fast they tangled with each other and came out as one.

A small smile sat at the corners of his lips. "Yes, I had already figured that out." He chuckled softly.

My body tensed, he wasn't freaking out like I thought he would, but that didn't mean there wasn't still time for an onslaught of anger. "How did you know?" I asked, curiously. My friends wouldn't have said anything and Mason's parents only found out last night, so they wouldn't have had the chance.

Richard.

Would Richard have told my dad?

No, I trusted Richard. Besides, apart from the quick greetings and the brief conversations we had about training, we hadn't really spoken much. That was another thing I was changing today.

My attention fell back on my dad. Giving me an affectionate, fatherly gaze, his lips turned upwards. "It wasn't difficult, Rainie. I remember looking at your mom when we first met in the exact same way he looked at you at the dinner." His eyes lit with the love he held for his mate. "Plus, his mark is somewhat of a give-away." He pointed to the pink skin just below my collar bone.

I slapped my hand against my neck. For some reason I felt ashamed. There was no reason why, it was perfectly normal for your mate to mark you, in fact, it had to happen.

What I couldn't figure out was why he didn't say anything to me about it before? "Are you angry with me?"

The slightly wrinkled skin between his eyes, creased. "Why would I be angry? My daughter has found her mate. Granted I wanted you to be older when it happened, but things like this can't be controlled."

He was definitely right about that. "Does mom know?"

His head tilted from side to side. "She hopes he is but she thinks he's just your boyfriend." His chuckle held the fondness he felt for her.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you." Sadness laced my voice. "We didn't want anyone to know yet, especially with everything that's going on with the Redbloods and the fight. It felt like our secret, but before I knew it, everyone started finding out. Mason told his mom and dad last night." Another wave of sadness and embarrassment hit me. I should have told my parents before anyone else.

I kept my head down and my eyes focused on my entwined hands that were still sat idly on my lap.

His chair scraped the tiled floor as he stood and walked round the table to crouch beside me. "You're having to grow up quickly, Rainie and it's okay to be scared. Not every teenage girl could become Beta, be expected to fight and find her mate all within 6 months. You're bound to feel a little overwhelmed with it all, but you don't have to do it on your own." His hand reached out for mine and he held it tight. "Now I know I'm 'an old dude'," I giggled at his comment, "But I'm still here if you need anything. Especially if your future Alpha steps out of line and needs to be taken down with a silver bullet or two." He winked causing me to laugh louder.

"Thanks, old man." I joked and wrapped my arms around him, hugging him tightly. "I love you."

"Anytime, my beautiful angel and I love you." He said softly.

It was strange how light I felt after telling him about Mason. It was as if an invisible weight had been sat on my shoulders and now it was gone.

Grabbing a clean cup, he sat it down the table in front of me and poured hot, black liquid. The smell of fresh coffee hit me instantly. "Thanks, pop."

"I guess there'll have to be another dinner," He was quick to hide his nervousness at the thought of it, but not quick enough. "Though for a happier reason, of course."

Thinking about the last dinner, I couldn't blame him for being nervous about it. "I think Mason is going to invite you and mom over soon." I said, remembering he had mentioned it a few days ago.

My dad nodded his head. "That will be nice. Strange, to be invited to an Alpha's house," He chuckled more to himself, "But nice." I had to agree with him. We were used to have a relaxed relationship with our Alpha and Luna, but everyone knew it wasn't like that with the Harbour Pack.

"They're really nice."

He lifted the cup to his mouth and sipped his coffee. "Yeah, they seem like a nice family." Clearing his throat, he glided his knife across the butter and began spreading it on his toast. "I assume you haven't been training." A light, red blush swept up his neck.

Well, this was going to be awkward.

"No, I spoke with Richard and we decided it would be best if I didn't for now." I said as fast I could. I didn't want to start the whole 'heat' conversation with my dad. "I'm going to see him today actually," Loading my fork with scrambled egg, I continued. "With the fight getting closer, I have to start and it's going to be hard as it is because everyone will be so far ahead of me."

The light red blush was now completely crimson. That's when my brain woke up and I realised how he might have taken what I'd said. I choked on my eggs.
Had I just implied that Mason and I had already had sex to my dad?

Holy Crap.

"I still won't be able to train with most of the pack." I said, quickly in an attempt to correct myself. "But I'm sure Richard will let me train with the girls."

With the release of the breath he had been holding, I knew he understood what I was trying to tell him. Though that still didn't stop me drowning in my embarrassment.

My dad made us something to eat and prepared my mom's breakfast before he left to get ready for work. I sat with my hands cupped around my coffee and let the ball of happiness build in my stomach.

* * *

"So it's all out in the open, then?" Bella asked, dripping her spoon into the tub of chocolate spread. I nodded, letting a full smile taking over my lips. "What did momma and papa wolf have to say?"

I reached over the bed for the chocolate, "My dad was great," I smiled remembering our conversation this morning. "Really great, actually and I haven't told mom yet."

Straight after school Bella and Emma insisted we spend some quality girl time together. What they meant, was that they wanted the ins and outs of Mason and I. There was one detail I was leaving out and that was the Luna ceremony. I wanted to know what was going on with that before I told anyone about it.

"I'm just happy he's finally acting how he should have months ago." Emma said, once I had finished filling up their eager ears with details of last night.

"Yeah, well it's about freaking time." Bella said, twirling her spoon in the chocolate. "I would have definitely made him beg for forgiveness though. Don't you regret not making him suffer more?"

I shook my head. It's not like I hadn't thought about it. Actually, I thought about it a lot, but in the end I decided, what's the point? All the pain I felt, the hurt and sadness, why would I put myself through that for longer than I had to? Then I thought about Mason. He may of hid his feelings from me, but that didn't mean my wolf couldn't feel his.

He was a jerk and I knew that, hell everyone knew that, but if you were destined for one person, one person who would be there through everything and stand by you, protecting you and eventually loving you, would you jeopardise that for revenge?

Her forehead creased. "Well I would." She smirked. "I would have kicked him in his happy place making it not so happy and set a pack of rogues on him." Suddenly clapping her hands together, she sat up straight. "Or even better, set the Redbloods on his tail."

Emma gasped and I could do nothing but laugh at her comment. "You can't say something like that." Emma whisper-yelled, obviously horrified by what she had heard. Only Bella could turn something serious into a joke.

Rolling her eyes and turning her attention back to me, Bells let a smirk fall effortlessly on her lips. "Whatever. What we really want is the rated R gossip." She wiggled her brows.

"The what?" I asked, glancing over to Emma who looked just as confused as I was.

Flickering her hair over her shoulder, "You know," she huffed a breath, "the rumpa humpa?"

I still had no idea what she was talking about and by the looks of it, neither did Emma. "Oh my God, for two mated wolves, you're both complete prudes."

"Excuse us for not knowing what 'rumpa humpa' means," Emma quipped. "Please do forgive us for being unaware of your imaginary words."

Bella waved her hand dismissively, "You're forgiven, square. I'm more concerned for Ray if he's not getting any of the good--." The rest of her sentence was cut off by a flying pillow directed straight to her face.

"My mate has nothing to complain about." Emma's cheeks flamed the colour of the pillow sitting on her lap. "Now, can we go back to talking about Rainie please?"

My eyes narrowed in her direction. "Sure thing Emma baby." Bella sang, "So Rainie," She said in all seriousness, perching her chin on her folded hands, "have you had a happy hump day yet?"

I could literally feel the heat spreading from my toes to my cheeks and it felt as if there was a spotlight burning through the skin on my face. It wasn't the best feeling I had experienced and it was certainly one I didn't want to feel again.

As if by magic, the dull sound pounding against my bedroom door saved me from further embarrassment. "Girls, we have to go." My mom said, popping her head around the door. Her face looked anything but happy.

"Is everything okay, Mrs Harper?" Emma asked, a sudden look of worry crossing her face.

My mom's eyes flickered to each of us before landing back on mine, "A pack meeting has been called," she said, solemnly, "it's with the Harbour Pack."

The second those words has left her lips, my heart took a nose dive in my chest. A pack meeting with the Harbour pack, why?

Without looking at her, I could feel Bella's eyes on me. Is this about Mason? She asked through our pack mind link.

I don't know. I answered, apprehension settling heavy in my stomach. It's probably about the Redbloods.

At least I hoped it was.

"It's starting in an hour." My mom nodded once and I didn't miss the last look she gave me before she left the room.

* * *

"Richard, I wanted to speak to you about training." I whispered, leaning forward in my chair.

We were all seated in the Harbour Pack's meeting room. It was probably the same square footage as my house and possibly the most intimidating room I had ever been in.

The walls were dark oak panelling and a large, marble, wood burning fire stood proud in the centre of the far wall. Rows of red leather chairs were lined either side of an aisle. The Harbour Pack were seated on one side whilst we were on the other.

Turning to face me, Richard smiled. "Are you ready for training?"

I knew what he meant. He was asking whether Mason and I had mated and if it was safe for me to train with male wolves. "I can train with the females." I said, my cheeks warming with embarrassment. "For now." I added.

With a look of hesitant he raised a brow. "It won't be easy, you've missed a lot of work and you won't have much time to catch up."

He was right. It would probably be the hardest thing I would have to do, but I had no other choice. My pack needed me and the Harbour Pack needed me. I nodded,
