a confession filled with doubt

****

"SO YOU GUYS are back together?" Ellie asked after she bit into her sandwich. It was lunchtime and Ellie and I decided to eat at the school's canteen after we heard how surprisingly good their new menu was. "And you had sex with him."

"Yeah," I reply taking a sip of my coffee. "Do you think it was the right decision?"

"What do you mean?" She looked at me expectantly, frowning as if it was common knowledge. "It's your life, Mila."

"No," I sighed. "I'm asking if you think it was a good choice to forgive Enzo after everything. I'm worried that this could blow up in my face."

"I think that's a solid concern, but not one too big that it stops you from dating him." Ellie picked up a napkin and wiped her hands. "If you're happy, why worry? What's the point of fighting it when you know you want to be together? There's no point in worrying if you should've made him grovel more."

"I just don't want to become irrational. I'm noticing I have a tendency to do that when it comes to Enzo. Fuck, I don't know. This is all very confusing and I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it."

"That's perfectly normal in any relationship," she said all-knowingly.

"Am I overreacting?" I felt the anxiety slowly creep in. "If I am please tell me."

"Of course you're not." Ellie rolled her eyes, laughing as she looked at my expression. "It's funny to see you out of your element. You're always this calm, collected Mila so it's nice to see this side of you. Honestly, it makes you look human."

"Shut up," I grumbled. "This is very new to me. I didn't think someone could make me feel this way."

"Now you're just bragging," she chuckled, but became serious soon after. "Mila, in my very honest opinion I am a bit wary after seeing you so shattered after you guys broke up. However, if you talked things through with him I don't see why this can't be a new beginning for you. Everyone deserves a second chance if they truly want it. I get why you're afraid now, but give it some time and I'm sure Enzo will prove it to you himself."

"He said he shouldn't be forgiven," I told her. "I don't know Ellie. He looked like he was carrying a heavy weight on his shoulders and it was like he's punishing himself for being with me. Before we made up, he told me that he felt guilty for taking advantage of my forgiveness."

"Then it's also your role to show him that he shouldn't feel guilty. Love may be about compromise, but I think it's also about learning to accept each other's faults. So don't think you're being easy by forgiving him so soon, think of it as you having faith that he's a better person than what he makes himself out to be."

"You don't know how much I needed that," I released a breath I didn't know I was holding.

"These kinds of things take time," Ellie leaned back against her chair. "The only thing you can do is learn from these experiences and not react the way you used to."

"I've been thinking," I tell Enzo. We were at my place again since Mike told Enzo he needed the place to himself. Enzo stayed silent and waited for me to continue. "I was just remembering how in the beginning there was a lot of doubts in our relationship. I want you to know that no one can say that you don't deserve me just because we come from different backgrounds. I feel like there were many times where both of us overreacted. I'll be more forthcoming now about how I'm feeling rather than letting it turn into an argument."

"I understand, I will too." He grabbed my hand. "I felt really insecure in the beginning, but I'm confident that we can get through it together. You'll be the first person I'll tell Mila."

"Who would've thought that two over-thinkers would get together?" I tell him, placing my head on his shoulder.

It was then when a text message came on my phone. I picked it up and immediately showed it to Enzo.

Unknown: Time is running out Milana, there will be consequences.

"Is it him?" He shoved a hand through his hair. "We need to figure out what he wants. We should also tell your mom, I know you don't want to, but this has gone too far."

I exhaled, knowing that he was right.

"You need to change your number too," Enzo said. "I don't know why that wasn't the first thing you did."

"With everything going on it slipped my mind." I answered, also questioning why that was wasn't my first plan of action.

"It's going to be all right," he grabbed my hand. "I'm not going to let whoever this is hurt you anymore."

"I think I need to make a list of people that might have a vendetta against my family." I replied, appreciating that he was here with me.

"That's a good place to start. After that, we're going to change your phone number."

We spent the next hour going through possible suspects, mostly the company associates and other high society people my mother invited to my birthday party.

"Do you think Daniel would do this?" He asks me, looking convinced at the possibility.

I shook my head in response. "Danny is one of the few people I know that wouldn't do such a thing. Especially since Raina was engaged to his brother."

Thinking about Raina made me regretful of the way things have become.

"You've never told me about her," Enzo says, but immediately became quiet after he saw the look on my face. "Never mind, you can tell me if you want when you're ready."

"No," I wipe a tear from my cheek. "Raina was my sister. She died in an accident, and soon after Michael overdosed on sleeping pills. That's why Danny wouldn't possibly be the person behind this, we both our families since that's what drove Raina to her death."

"What do you mean?"

"Raina left a note saying she was leaving with Michael to start a new life. Our parents approved of their relationship, but Raina didn't want to take over the company. She wanted to be a writer." I smiled ruefully as the memories flitted through my mind.

"Thank you for sharing with me," Enzo smiled. "I also have a few things to say, but I promise I will in due time."

"I can live with that," I set down the pen on the notepad, feeling grateful that he could trust me. "Now, let's get back to it."
