"Im tired of running." I told my brother ray as I aggressively shoved clothes into my suitcase and duffel bag. We were running away again.

If you didn't already know my names Amari Jordan. I'm 15 and I live with my older brother ray in Atlanta Georgia. Well, not anymore. I never knew my parents and when things got hard my brother started selling, because that was the only way he could provide for me.

Soon when I was 11 his business was booming and we had a nice house, car and everything I wanted, he'd buy it. He always made sure to humble me though but still told me I could have anything I'd ever dreamed of and more.

Until recently he sold drugs to the wrong crowd. I'd usually help ray by going to bum parties and selling around but one day he walked up to the wrong group and word got out, if your a drug dealer you'd know because you have your sets of clients. The locals, the addicts and the tourists. He told me never to sell to the tourists.

Now here we are packing away our shit and driving a full day to live in some dusty town called east highland, in California. Ray promised we'd live a good life down there. Where I could go out, make friends and party. His words, not mine.

Even though I was a bit upset with ray it wasn't like I had anything to leave behind. No best friend, no boyfriend, hell not even a teacher who could call to check on me. I was homeschooled. Ray taught me everything, and you might think she's dumb as hell but surprisingly I'm not.

By the time I entered 10th grade I was in all honors. Math was my best subject of course given my brothers job. I soon began helping him sell and we became the perfect team. Not many people would look at me and except me to be carrying 5 pounds of cocaine in my backpack, but trust me I could've been.

"Ray this town looks like it's been going through the Great Depression for decades." I blandly state as I look out of the window. "Your exaggerating Mari, it's gonna be good. Fresh start." He says drumming his steering wheel. "Fresh start my ass." I mumble and put both AirPods in my ear, playing "she" by Tyler, the creator.

"We're here." I see my brother mouth and I take the AirPods out of my ears. I unbuckle my belt and hop out to look around. I looked at the house and the first thing I thought was "eh."

"Like it!?" My brother asks and I nod. Truthfully I did like it. It was a simple brick and nice plain colors. Which meant we didn't stand out. "Alright grab some shit. I'll get takeout or something for dinner." He says shrugging.

As I watched my brother takes some things into the house, I made my way to the trunk to grab my suitcase. I took a second to look around and analyze the street before my eyes locked on a girl on her bike, messy curls and a tired expression. I waved to her and she smiled, beginning to pedal towards me.

"Hey, you new here?" She asks and I nod. "Sup I'm rue. Well ruby but.." she says and I hold out my hand. "Mari, well Amari but.." I say quoting her. She lets out a laugh and hops back on her bike. "See ya around?" She asks. "See ya around." I say and she pedals away.

I did it. Made a friend. Congrafuckinglations Amari. I smiled to myself before turned back to the trunk. I grabbed a suitcases and rolled it to the front door. Soon we were done and ray let me choose a room a few days before. Naturally I chose the one with the bay window, I didn't care if it directly faced someone else's , it was just to pretty.

I threw my duffel bag down on my bed that had been delivered and gently placed my suitcase down. It was bright and early 6am so I pulled open my plain blinds and looked out to see the sunrise fading. As I was about to close my blinds I caught someone's eyes in the window across from me. My neighbor?

He was tall-ish but that's all I could really make out from the darkness of his room. I then awkwardly and quickly shut the blinds and changed into something more comfortable.

I stayed in my room for a few hours until ray came up and knocked, leaning in my open door frame. "Can you go buy me a lighter?" He asks. "What happened to yours." I ask giving him the side eye. "It's like finished I don't fucking know." He says and I roll my eyes. "Fine." I say and get up.

I kept my same outfit on which consisted of a white tank crop top and gray sweats. I slid on my Nike dunks and grabbed my skateboard, locking the door behind me. I rode down the hill of my street as I looked around for any sort of shop. I made a left and came across a shop labeled "milk."

Once I got there I set my skateboard in the bush and walked in. There the familiar scent of weed filled my nose and I wandered around before finding the lighters. I picked up a pink one just to fuck with ray.

I approached the register to find a ginger haired man with a buzz, and a blunt hanging from his mouth. "Wassup?" He asks as I place the lighter down. "Hi, nothing much." I say awkwardly. He spoke in a slow monotone voice which was rather soothing.

"You new here or something cause I ain't never seen you around." He asks. "Yea I am." I say and hand him the money for the lighter. "Well I'm fezco but call me fez." He says and I nod. "I'm Amari." I say and he gives me my change.

As I'm walking out of the shop, I take notice to a pair of eyes on me. The same ones from earlier but coming from the inside of a freezer? Yea this shit is getting weird.
I brushed it off and decided I'd bake something and pay a visit to these neighbors tomorrow just to make sure they weren't out for my blood.
