Chapter 1 - Familiar Yet Far Away

'Come on, come on, come on...' I mutter to myself while waiting in the underground station.

I definitely cannot be late on the first day of my placement.

It honestly took me everything I had to get this opportunity to work in the Angus Arts, one of the most respected events companies in the world.

This is the golden ticket into the industry that an international postgraduate like me has to grab on tight.

As I sprint in and out of the tube, running fast on the damp pavement almost tripping myself—I am here. Finally.

'Hi, I'm the new intern. Can you show me the Operations director's office?' I walk up to the reception and ask John...Mon, something. I narrow my eyes, trying to read his badge.

'Sorry, can I have your name?' He asks politely.

'Sage. Sage Carlos.'

'Ok...yes, I found you. You're working with Ms Osis.' John states something that I already know, to which I simply smile and nod.

Come on. I only have five more minutes to step into that office.

'Her office is on the 5th floor, at the end of the corridor. Good luck.' He gives me a seemingly sympathetic smile.

What is that supposed to mean?

Without time to further analyse the situation, I rush to the lift and press the 5th floor.

I look down at my watch and look up at the floor number impatiently. Two minutes.

The good thing is no one is blocking me from storming to the door of Ms Osis's office, I knock on the door precisely one minute before 9.00.

My heart is pounding in anxiety.

'Come in.'

I take a deep breath and open the door. There's a dark-haired woman sitting in the left end of the room with large French windows.

She looks quite young. Awfully young. Also beautiful in the pantsuit.

I can hear my gay heart squeezing. What a view.

Good luck indeed.

'Hello, Ms Osis. I'm Sage Carlos, your new intern.' I put on my brightest smile and walk over to her, holding out my hand.

She sits in her leather chair, glancing at my face, then my hand, giving me a firm grip.

In that millisecond of touch her soft smooth skin, I feel some images rushing through my mind. Something familiar yet far away. Something so intense that makes the lights in the room shiver a little.

No. Bloody. Way.

If you've heard of Twin Flames, you'd know what I'm talking about.

I have never felt energy this intense and heart-warming. I suspect this to be a so-called 'twin flame connection'.

However, I doubt she feels it because when she looks up at me again, her ice-blue eyes are sharp and cold, 'Nice meeting you, Ms Carlos. And you're ten minutes late.'

Late? I am snapped back into the reality from my bubbly twin-flame fantasy.

'Sorry, I didn't realise my watch was ten minutes late. I'll be here at nine sharp tomorrow.' I stiffly pull my hand back, secretly sweating and wishing my brown skin covers up my flush.

Shit! Shit! Shit! Here I am, thinking she might be 'the one', instead, she can be the death of me.

She shakes her head with a lock of her raven curls falling on her chest, still giving me the dead look. 'No, you should be here at ten to nine, NOT nine sharp. I expect you to have everything ready by nine o'clock.'

Damn it. 'Got it.' I force a smile. Nope, this woman cannot be my fucking twin.

I internally slap my own face to wake myself up from the raging hormones.

Her look eventually becomes less intense. She tilts her head towards a desk on my right. 'That's your desk. Settle your things, later Chris will run your tasks with you.'

'Noted. Boss.'

She briefly glances at me one last time before burying herself in her paperwork again.

Okay, so I am going to work with an ice queen for the next six months.

This is going to be interesting.

//////

After a few minutes, a girl with light blond hair and curious green eyes pops her head into the office, I assume she's Chris.

Chris is Ms Osis's assistant, her desk is in the room next to Ms Osis's.

You ask why I am in the same office as Ms Osis but not her assistant?

Well, according to Chris, this is an experimental internship, I just happen to be the lucky intern.

Chris shows me around and tells me every little detail I should remember while being around Ms Osis.

Such as, always be ten minutes earlier, all the documents have to follow an alphabetical order and a colour code, no small talks with her...

'And if you fail her, well, you better quit before she can fire you.' Chris warns me while stuffing her mouth with food.

We took our sweet time to finish the tour and headed straight to the cafeteria. Thankfully, this is only my first day, no actual works are given.

'Noted. At least she won't kill me.' I half-joke, taking a bite of my cheese sandwich.

'Oh, she might just.' Chris snickers, 'From my two-year experience around the Operations department, Danielle Osis can literally kill people with her stares. There was an intern from the HR, he had a serious panic attack after bumping into her. He ended up in the hospital. She's literally Medusa.'

I bet. Ms Osis has the clearest and the most beautiful but intimidating eyes.

I bet she looks good smiling too...this might as well be my off-record mission. I always love a good challenge. Who says if she ain't my twin flame I cannot mess with her a little?

Well, but of course I won't take it far enough to lose my job.

'Doesn't she eat lunch tho?' I look around the cafeteria, not seeing her dark curly-ended hair and pretty face anywhere.

'Oh, she usually eats in the office. She must've bought it earlier.'

'Huh.' A loner, NOT surprising.

Somehow, I feel a stare behind my back. I quickly glance at my watch.

12.50. I only have to go back at 13.30. So, it shouldn't be my boss staring.

Feeling a bit safer, I turn around to see who's burning holes in my back.

It's a slim girl with dark blond hair and fair skin who I've known and had a crush on from the university.

Meghan Hill. What a luck.

She's narrowing her pretty grey eyes at me curiously, seeing me turning around, she smiles a bit awkwardly and walks over.

'Hello, I am-'

'Meghan Hill.' I cut her off, smiling, feeling my cheeks burning up a little, 'We had the same class back in the university.' And I had a serious crush on you. Well, might still have a little.

'Yes!' Her eyes suddenly brighten up. 'Sage, right?'

Oh god. She actually remembers my name. Now I can forget my so-intimidating boss for a moment.

'Ah, you two know each other? Brilliant, I'll leave you guys to catch up. Toodles!' Chris cheerfully shoves the last bit of her beef noodles and heads back to the office.

Now Meghan sits down at the opposite side of me. She plays with the ring on her middle finger, looking a bit timid. 'So, what a small world, huh?'

'Yeah. But I'm glad to see a familiar face here.' Especially a pretty one. Sorry, I just get too excited seeing her here talking to me.

I mean, I didn't have the guts to ask her out, not even talking to her back then.

We've met in one of the business modules three years ago. She was in her last year of university and I was one year behind. She was quite quiet in class, looking all innocent and delicate. I would've talked to her, but she's always got a friend beside her, so I never really caught her alone.

I was a coward like that. I mean, I still kinda am.

'Totally.' Her lips curve up warmly, showing her white neat teeth. 'If you have any questions, feel free to come to me.' And she's nice too.

'Then...can I have your number or WhatsApp? Whatever you use.' I decide this is the right timing to ask FINALLY.

'Sure. We can use iMessage. This is my number.' She takes over my phone and types her number in.

I feel like a million dollars right now.

'Thanks.' I quickly type her name in and send her the sunglasses emoji.

She looks down and chuckles. 'Anyway, I think I should go back now. I will see you around, Sage.' She stands up, casually waving goodbye.

'Yeah, see you...' I look at my phone, it's 13.15 already. I should be going too. Don't want to lose my job over being constantly late.

But, I should totally ask Meghan out right now since I've got the chance. This is something I should've done years ago.

'Um, Meghan, wait.' I catch up to her side, the first time being close enough to realise we're around the same height, 5'3. 'Uh, do you want to, maybe grab some dinner on Friday?'

I force myself to look into her eyes when asking.

Don't freak out, Sage...if she asks why, you can just say you wanna know the company affairs better...or to tell her how you had a crush on her in uni. Surely, she can't refuse that.

She looks a bit surprised but only thinks for just a few seconds before nodding, 'Friday night sounds good. We can work out the food later?'

We walk into the lift together, she presses the 3rd and I press the 5th.

I nod happily and accidentally say, 'Yes! It's a date!'

I realise my problematic wording right after and think I'd die of embarrassment.

'I-I mean-' I stutter. Shoot, that was stupid!

A shade of pink colours her cheeks as she smiles, 'I get it. Don't stress about it.'

Thankfully, the lift reaches her floor, and she gives me a wink before walking out.

Totally wasn't expecting that...

I lean back to the handle in the lift, letting out a big sigh. It's only half of my first day, and it's already too exciting.

Still have half of a workday to go through. I can do this.

I give myself a little pat talk before walking back into the same room as my stone-cold boss.

'You're on time. Good.' Ms Osis gives me a bored quick look, saying matter-of-the-factly without smiling.

What a waste of the beautiful plump lips that her mum gave her.

'I learn fast.' I give her a smirk, somehow feeling like a comeback.

She arches her right brow at it, giving me a longer, less deadly look than the other.

I stare back at her in my desk, the odd feeling I've got when I shook her hand pops into my mind.

I wonder if she got it too...or was I too damn sensitive?

I can't read her look. She must be super good at controlling her emotions, or maybe she simply doesn't have any.

As I start to feel the indescribable weight of our eye contact and regret saying anything to her, she breaks the gaze.

'Since you learn so fast, why don't you confirm these for me?' She stands up, holding a pile of papers to my desk. 'These are the presenters for the next collective exhibition. I need you to email them and confirm their attendance. Got it?'

Whoa, Ms Osis is a lot taller than I thought. At least 5'8. I am completely overwhelmed by her looking down at me.

She is not only tall but also has a great body shape too...

'Uh-hm. Sage.' Ms Osis clears her throat, pulling my attention from her booty back to her face and to the pile of papers she's holding out.

'Got it?' She asks again, squinting her eyes.

I quickly nod and take over the papers, looking down to hide my embarrassment.

Bloody hell. I was caught red-handed.

I feel so grateful when she says nothing more and walks right back to her seat.

I can't help but take another quick look, checking out her figure. She looks truly good in suit trousers with those long legs...which I personally wish I had.

Why I have the boobs, the booty, and only the height of a hobbit?

Then, I see her raising her brow at me with a questioning look again. I must have zoned out. Damn me.

I instantly dive into the papers she gave, pretending nothing has happened.

//////

I am kept busy for the rest of the day. We didn't speak until Ms Osis asks, 'Have you had all the confirmations?'

I shake my head. 'Not yet. But I've sent out all the emails.'

I thought she was gonna say something like 'stay till you've got them all', instead she just nods and says, 'You can go now. If they haven't replied by tomorrow morning, call them.'

'No problem.' I answer with relief, starting to put away my things.

When I put on my long coat, I realise she is still sitting at her desk, working.

'Aren't you leaving too, boss?'

Somehow I feel bad and weird about going off work before the boss.

Ms Osis looks up with a plain face, 'I've got something to finish. It's okay, you can go ahead.' She might have felt my unease as she pulls up the corners of her mouth a little, seemingly giving me a reassuring smile.

I knew it, she does look good smiling, even just a little.

I must have let my gaze wander a bit too long again as I hear Ms Osis say, 'And you should stop that.'

I meet her almost-amused look, not knowing what to say.

'It's not polite to stare. At the face or anywhere else.' She elaborates. This time, I see a genuine teasing smirk on her red lips.

How can she look so devilish and sexy at the same time? I gulp.

'Noted. Night, boss.' I can only squeeze out these three words before running out of this place like the wind.

I can still hear my heart pounding fast and furiously when I arrive home.
