"Psst."

I groaned and pulled the pillow over my head, turning away from the voice.

"Psssst," the voice whispered again. Then I felt a quick pressure against my shoulder. It released then appeared again. The owner of the voice was poking me.

Sighing dramatically, I rolled over.

"Jesse stop," I mumbled into the pillow.

"My name isn't Jesse," the higher pitched voice said.

I stopped breathing and my body tensed up. I quickly took inventory of where I was and with whom. Okay, creepy hotel, creepy old lady, creepy kid, people trying to get into our room, I slept in the same bed as Jesse, I don't have covers, I'm wearing Jesse's clothes.

Who the hell did that voice belong to?

I was too afraid to open my eyes, like keeping them closed was protecting me from the horror movie scene that was about to unfold.

"Psst," the voice said again, and I felt a finger poke my shoulder again.

Panic was rising inside me. Where was Jesse?

Counting to ten, I decided that keeping my eyes shut was only prolonging my death so I did the stupidest thing ever. I opened my eyes one at a time.

"AHHHH!!" I screamed, ripping the pillow out from under my head and throwing it at the kid that was trying to get into our room all last night. I sat straight up, bumping into what felt like Jesse who apparently hadn't heard the kid break in at some point. Some hero he was.

Jesse shot up from his comfy position, throwing his arms out and accidentally hitting me in the back.

"What the hell?!" He shouted in response to my sudden scream.

He surveyed his surroundings until his eyes fell onto the little kid.

"AHHHH!!" He yelled in surprise and probably a little bit of fear.

We looked at each other.

"AHHHH!!!!" We both yelled and glanced back at the kid.

"Who are you?!" I shrieked, scooting back into Jesse's warm chest.

He quickly wrapped an arm around me and drew me closer to him. I suppose it was to protect me. Clearly, he was failing. Idiot.

"Jonathan!" He chirped, a giant smile plastered onto his face. His clothes were just as large and just as ratty as they were last night.

"Care to explain why you're in our room?" Jesse snapped.

The kid looked at us in confusion.

"Your room?" He questioned. "This is my room."

I glanced at Jesse and if it weren't for the scary situation we were in currently, I would have laughed. Half of his curly hair was plastered to the side of his head and the other half was poofed out like a bad perm.

"Were you guys doing the nasty last night?" The kid asked and snickered.

My eyes bugged out of their sockets and Jesse tightened his grip around my waist.

"Dude, no," Jesse sighed in frustration. "Kid, what are you doing in here?"

"Well, Leona doesn't like for me to roam the halls and I was trying to get back inside before I would be punished."

"Punished?" I asked, more to myself than to him, but he heard it loud and clear.

"Yeah," he shrugged. "She locks me away in timeout."

It didn't take long for everything to click together and when they did Jesse was out of the bed and convincing the kid to come back later so we could get the hell out of that place.

He threw his bag up against the wall next to the door while he brushed his teeth and ran water through his hair.

I leaned against the bathroom door, waiting for him to finish so we could leave.

He spit and knocked the toothbrush up against the sink a few times to get rid of the excess water before tossing it into his bag.

"Okay, I'm going to take the boards real quick and check out," he explained while hunched over the pile of surf boards.

I raised my eyebrows.

"I am not staying here by myself," I objected.

"Well then you go check out real quick and I'll start loading up," he murmured as he texted something on his phone.

I snapped my fingers in front of his face to gain his full attention.

"Hello?" I questioned. "Were you not around last night and this morning for the crazies?"

He smirked and shoved his phone into his pocket, taking a step towards me. He gazed down at me and snaked an arm around my waist.

"Oh I was here alright, and you sure were cozying up to me Baby Dess," he winked.

I sighed and looked away, struggling to ignore the arm around me.

"I was just scared, momentary lapse of judgement, it won't happen again," I grumbled.

He stared at me for a moment before letting go of me. Surprisingly, I didn't want him to.

Did I just say that?

Yeah you did, you like him.

Oh shut up mind. I'm under extreme duress, it doesn't count.

"Good to know," he responded before turning around to grab the key off of the table and reaching for a few boards.

"Wait," I said, stepping forward. "I am not staying here alone."

"Dess, you're fine," he responded in an even tone.

I stared at his rigid back through his shirt, wondering why he was being so cold toward me suddenly.

"Jesse," I reached out to touch his shoulder. He froze against my touch and he stood up straighter.

"Grab the rest of the boards, swing my bag over my shoulder and we'll go," he said.

I quickly did as he said and followed after him as he strode swiftly down the creepy corridor.

He tossed the key onto the desk, gave a fake salute and we moved out into the sunlight.

"Thank God," I whispered as I sat in my seat in the van, still not over the night we had last night. I have never been more freaked out in my life.

"That's what you get for being so cheap," I snapped and leaned against the window, appreciating the old piece of junk surf van now more than ever.

He didn't respond.

I stared at him as he jerked the van into reverse and all but peeled out of the parking lot. He's mad. He's actually angry. But about what? Me? Did I actually say something that pissed him off? I mean, of all the things I've said to him all these years, telling him it wouldn't happen again is what finally makes him shut up?

Should've done that years ago.

Yeah, right.

Ugh, my own mind was calling me out. Is that normal? Can your own mind actually call you out on your own crap? I mean, hello? Mind, you're the one doing this, not me.

I sighed and rest my head against the window. I'm going crazy.

I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye, pretending not to care obviously, but couldn't help it. It'd been about five minutes since we left the creepy hotel and his jaw wasn't sawing itself down to nothing anymore, so that's good, but he still looked...not like Jesse.

Who would have thought I would actually miss annoying Jesse.

"So, did you bring the shark suit on this trip?" I started, desperately trying to strike up innocent conversation.

He glanced at me. Yes! Score one for Alice.

He looked back at the road and gave a sharp shake of his head to tell me no. I sighed. Never mind, back to zero. I figured the shark suit of all things would get him to talk, he loves that stupid thing.

I narrowed my eyes at him and shook my head out of frustration.

"I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to be the brooding blonde, not you," I murmured.

"My hair isn't blonde."

Internally, I was grinning. He spoke.

I shrugged. "I mean, it kind of is. Do you frost the tips?"

He scoffed. "I don't frost the tips, what are we back in elementary school?"

I glanced at him, curious.

"Elementary school? You mean you actually did that?" I stared at him in anticipation. The humor was bubbling up inside of me as he tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"Oh my gosh, you did!" I burst out laughing. I have got to get my hands on some photos, Lissa and Demi would just die.

I sucked in a deep breath to calm myself and readjusted how I was sitting to face him better. He wouldn't look at me, but I knew I was making him feel uncomfortable. He was noticeably annoyed by the frosted tips thing.

"J, come on..." I begged, giving him my best puppy dog eyed look I could possibly muster up. He glanced at me out of the corner of his eye, but only went back to staring at the road.

"I bet you looked really cute with frosted tips back then..." I tried.

I saw his jaw unclench and his hand loosen on the wheel. Boys, so easily coerced out of their mood swings. Too easy.

"Yeah," I glanced off out at the ocean to my right as I fake wondered. "I can only imagine the girls chasing you around the playground back then."

I glanced at him quickly, noticing his smug smirk beginning to replace his icy stare. Just a little bit more.

"What's new though right?" I grumbled, shoving my giggles down so I could sell my fake annoyance. "Girls literally paw at you on the beach and in bars. Embarrassing really," I murmured.

"Dess, shut up," he said.

I jerked my head to face him and scowled. He was staring at me, an eyebrow raised.

"Quit trying to stroke my ego, while I appreciate your fake compliments, they are not needed," he stated and his eyes snapped right back to the road.

I gaped at him. What the actual hell has happened to him?

I sighed and crossed my arms with an exaggerated huff, making sure he knew full well how I annoyed I was.

"I'm giving you the beginner level kids today, make sure you bring extra sunscreen and make sure to really focus on showing them the proper way to paddle," he murmured.

Beginners. Great, just great. They were literally the worst to work with. I knew why he gave them to me though, he was making an attempt to avoid the bimbo girls who would pretend to not know what to do so he would have to stay closer to them in the water the entire time.

In a weird way, I was proud of him. He wasn't taking the opportunity to flirt with girls. Another small part of me was furious. I have to deal with the whiners now.

I stared at him, my eyes narrowed and my mouth set in a permanent frown while I attempted to figure out his weird mood swing. I don't like it. I've never really dealt with this Jesse. He's normally sickeningly happy. He's that guy that's optimistic during the worst moments. You know, the moments where you just want silence and he's there trying to comfort and point out the good in the situation when in reality he's almost making it worse?

That's him. Annoying.

So what happened? Sure, I lied about it only being because I was sca--

I froze and blinked in surprise at my own thoughts.

Whoa, back up. Did I just admit that I lied about that? This trip needed to end stat. Neither one of us were acting like ourselves, and it was beginning to freak me out.

"Oh and one of the boards snapped this morning while I was loading them. So you'll be one short," he said in a monotone voice.

"It was a long board?" I asked.

"No, but I'm giving the upper level kids more opportunity to surf," he explained.

"So you're giving one of them one of my boards?" I said, my voice low.

Seriously? They don't even like the long boards, they can't even do what they want to learn on the long boards. He's being absolutely ridiculous.

"Technically, they're all my boards," he smirked.

I stared at him for a moment, struggling to contain the anger that was welling up inside me. I hope one of my kids accidentally gets in the way of his, crashes, and a board gets sent flying to his head.

I let out a deep breath and tore my gaze away from him.

This was going to be a long day.

Hey y'all. I wanted to get an update out so this one was more of a filler chapter, but a necessary one to set up some things in the future. Don't worry, more exciting things are on the way!
