"Ms. Rowan, can you tell us the answer to number twelve?"

I looked up from my daze and noticed the whole class was staring at me. I fidgeted with my paper before clearing my throat.

" The Election of 1800" I answered

"Correct"

I sighed from relief since I wasn't paying an ounce of attention. My mind kept going back to what happened after Luca left Saturday.

"Skylar! We sent you to that school to get an education. Not to get a boyfriend" My dad yelled at me.

My face reddened in anger, I clenched my fist and took a deep breath. I don't understand why he didn't get it. Mom certainly didn't have a problem.

"I already told you, he's not my boyfriend. He's not even a friend" I calmly explained.

This argument had been going on for the past few minutes.

"He is my friend's brother. He was being nice and offered to take me home, mom welcomed him inside."

My dad shook his head at me. I slowly sat down in the kitchen chair, preparing myself for a lecture. I knew if I tried to explain further I would be accused of having an "attitude".

"I don't understand why you would associate yourself with a boy who BROKE YOUR FOOT"

I restrained myself from rolling my eyes. I looked at my mom for help but she seemed confused at dad's reaction as well.

"Michael," she said, walking over and placing a hand on his shoulder " we all know it was an accident. Besides, we should be happy that Skylar has made friends. That school is tough, academically and socially, don't make her get rid of a group of people who can help her make it through"

"Dad, if my grades drop or they become a bad influence, I will stay away, but they've been nothing but nice and welcoming to me."

I hoped that would drop the conversation.

"Aren't they brats?" He asked

I let out a laugh and shook my head no.

"No, at least they are not compared to the rest of the school. Sure they drive $100,000 cars and wear thousand-dollar clothes but when talking to them, you would never know. Even with all their riches, they are down-to-earth, genuine people dad."

Excluding Thomas, he's kind of a jerk.

My dad and I held eye contact for a little while. Both of us to stubborn to look away from each other.

"You know just as well as I do dad that I'm going to need a support group at that school. I need them"

"Whatever" he mumbled and walked out of the kitchen.

I turned towards mom and held my hands out in frustration. Dad had never acted like this before, he was always encouraging me to branch out and be with teenagers more often.

"I don't know Skylar," she said pursing her lips and walking in the direction that dad left.

"Finish reading the document tonight. Write down five questions you have about it. I will see you tomorrow" the teacher yelled as we walked out of the door.

The days at MBPA have gotten much easier. While people still stared at me as I walked down the halls, it wasn't nearly as bad as it used to be. Some would even come to help me with my books since my crutches were still in the way.

Luca helped me when he could but most of his classes were on the other side of the school. Marlee told me that their mom told him he had to help me but I didn't care. I honestly think that Luca truly felt bad because if he didn't want to help me out, he wouldn't have. The boy is like a cat, he does what he wants, and when he wants to.

"Hey girl" I turned to my left and saw Cleo walking behind me.

"Hey, where were you this morning?"

"Slept in." She shrugged, taking a sip of her Starbucks.

I gave her a look and nodded at her drink.

"I was already late, might as well make it worth it"

"Can't argue with that" I laughed

She handed me her drink and I took a sip myself. What are friends for if you don't share your drinks?

We walked over to my locker since it was break time. Most were having snacks, on their phones, or hanging out. I noticed Luca sitting on top of a metal table out in the courtyard. His teammates sat on the benches that were attached to the tables but no one other than Luca was on the actual tabletop. Luca was obviously the center of attention, everyone around him was hanging onto every word he said. I noticed him pull his arm back and then sling it forwards like he was throwing a football. He had a slight smirk tugging on the corners of his lips and I assumed he was bragging about his game-winning throw.

I turned my attention back to Cleo, I didn't need Luca seeing me starring at him.

" So are you going to the dance?" Cleo asked

I raised my eyebrow at her confused. I didn't have a clue about what she was talking about.

"Homecoming" she elaborated, nodding her head to a wall covered in posters advertising the homecoming dress-up days, game, and dance.

"Oh, well, I don't know. Should I?"

Jefferson had a homecoming week but our football team was pitiful so nobody participated. It mainly consisted of some lousy posters lining the halls and then a football game that we were guaranteed to lose.

" It's up to you." Cleo answered "I'm going just because my parents will give the speech about me going to regret that I didn't participate in the high school experience bs"

" I'll think about it" I mumbled, "I'm sure Marlee and Bailey will go."

"For sure" Cleo nodded " I can't imagine those girls passing up an opportunity to dress up"

I nodded my head in agreement. Cleo and I continued to talk until the bell rang signaling the end of the break. We went our separate ways, me to physics.

Mr. Reynolds was late so a couple of other students and I were waiting outside of his door. This wasn't unusual, he was a very slow walker and spoke to almost everyone, so it took him a while to get back.

"Hey, Rowan" I turned to find the person who was calling me.

Luca was walking with Thomas down the hall, heading this way.  I sucked in a breath as they walked closer. I hadn't spoken to Luca since he left my house Saturday morning and I wouldn't put it past him to tell his friends an extra-rated story about how we woke up to each other.

" Hey," I said forcing a smile "what are you doing here?" I asked confused " Don't you have class?"

Luca rolled his eyes at me as I asked him the dumbest question ever.

" Of course you're worried about me doing what I'm supposed to," he said acting like he was annoyed but I could tell it was just pretend based on his eyes gleaming with mischief.

"I don't care about whether what you are doing is right or wrong Reid, I was just curious," I said rolling my eyes at him

"We got a sub and I convinced her to let me leave." he explained "it's boring, I already know it all"

I shook my head at him. For the short time that I have known Luca, I can tell he's very smart even if he acts like an idiot. He just gets bored easily since school comes easy to him. He's always moving, I can't imagine him being happy sitting in class.

" So what's your plan?" I asked

"To hang out with you and Tommy of course," he said throwing his arm around Thomas's shoulder.

Thomas sneered at the nickname and shook off Luca's arm. I let out a giggle at his reaction.

"So what about him?" I asked looking down the hall where Mr. Reynolds was walking down the hall.

"Mr. Reynolds loves Luca" Thomas explained

"Why?" I asked

Luca let out a gasp acting like my words hurt him.

"I'm hurt Skylar. For the record most teachers love me"

So dramatic

"You know what I meant" I chided him, pushing his chest so he would go away.

" The man has a love for two things, Physics, and football, so when I had an A in his class and was winning every game last year, he fell in love," Luca said, in a dreamy sing-song voice, place both of his hands over his heart.

It's hard to picture an old guy who has a deep love for science to enjoy a game of football, but I guess anything is possible.

"Watch how it's done" Luca whispered where only me and Thomas could hear.

"Mr. Reynolds" Luca called out with a huge grin on his face, showing off his perfect teeth.

Thomas and I let out a laugh at Luca, but sure enough, Mr. Reynolds seemed delighted to see him. After a quick conversation, Luca walked back to us with a smile on his face.

"Rowan, you get the pleasure of spending the next hour with me"

"Bless her heart," Thomas said

I gave them sarcastic smile and walked myself into the classroom, ignoring the boys who somehow came into my life.
