Dylan's POV

I waited in the car park for Michael and the boys like always. You know the drill by now, getting a lift home from school because I'm too poor to get a car myself. Suddenly I see the girl from maths walking towards me from behind the car. I believe her name is Madeleine... or Maggie is it? I'm honestly not too sure.

"Who are you waiting for?" she asks me with a smile on her face, holding textbooks in her hands because they wouldn't all fit into her bag.

"Uh, for Michael. You?" I responded.

"Umm, for you?" Oh shit, I totally forgot I told her we're gonna study some place today.

"Oh yeah that, um, I don't think it's a good idea. Let's just drop it" I say and she gives me the 'why' look.

"I've done some thinking and it won't work" I try to hint but she clearly doesn't understand since she's pulling that confused look again.

"YOU'RE A NERD!"

"Oh is that what you think?" she squints her eyes.

"It just doesn't work like that, I'm the captain of the football team, you're the brain of Maths or whatever. Two different worlds Einstein." I explain.

"I'm trying to help you and this is what I get in response? You screaming and pushing me away from you, saying you don't want to be seen with me because I'm clever?" she spits back.

"Hey that's not what I said, that's what you think" I try to make a point.

"No that's what you meant, I understood exactly. You know, you really are the dumbest person in this school, because even he would take any help being given to him if it meant that he'd have to give his dream up. Have fun finding a college that will give you a scholarship." she finishes and starts walking away.

Damn that was a good ass speech. Very sassy, but still good. Shit, what now? I scratch the back of my neck to help me think...

Fuck it. I start running in her direction to catch up to her. "Hey wait, I'm in" I say and she gives me a terrifying look that makes me wanna explain myself. "You're right, I gotta do something about it if I want to go to college... and you're like the only person who can help me." I add on.

"Good." she just smiles and starts walking again. I lightly chuckle and start jogging to catch up to her again.

"I just don't understand why you wanna help me so much, you got a crush on me or something?" had to be asked, I know I'm good with girls.

She lightly laughs, "Ha. Cocky much?" Her smile doesn't go away though.

"Aww don't be shy, you can tell me, I'll be cool about it. You know how many times I've been in this situation? I earned a lot of practise"

"I betcha did" she starts laughing again. What a weird girl, laughing at her own sarcastic comments.

"Well there has to be something else in it, you can't just want to help people out like that", she stops walking so I stop as well, "And why not? Maybe I just felt sorry for you, plus if I know I can help someone out with their career, I'll do it. Makes me feel less guilty if I know I offered help at least."

Whoa good girl isn't she? We carried on walking for about ten minutes and she hasn't spoken at all, just laughed at what I said. I was making my lame ass jokes about her liking me and stuff because what else am I going to talk about? She clearly doesn't want to talk about herself, that makes me not want to talk about myself and plus she's a really hard girl to talk to. I also can't stay quiet for long so I needed to say something. Better than silence.

Once we get to the park, we sit on a bench and she opens her backpack, taking her books and notepad out.

"Okay, so this right here, is going to be your life from now on. It has all of my notes in it, everything is explained in detailed, key words that the examiners are looking out for are highlighted, so as long as you go by this, there's no way you can't get at least a B+" she explains, flipping through the pages in her notepad.

My eyes widen at the sudden colour in the notepad. Everything is highlighted, literally everything. Pink, blue, green, orange and yellow.

"That's a lot of information," I huff in pain, "and a lot of words to memorise."

"Yeah, well if you wanna get to college, you have to study. Your career isn't going to be successful just because of your charms."

I smirk knowing exactly how to respond to that, "So you think I'm charming?" I cock my eyebrows.

She rolls her eyes, "Please stop and focus."

I just nod my head to her statement, "Okay, so everything is sectioned off by the titles on the top of the page, for instance this one is Trigonometry and this section has 5 other smaller sections that fall into Trigonometry, I've listed them here, have a look."

My eyes scan the page from top moving my way down.

Trigonometric ratios

Trigonometric ratios of angles 0, 30, 45, 60 and 90.

Trigonometric ratios of complementary angles

Trigonometric identities

Heights and distances

I knew this was a bad idea, I don't wanna tell her that these titles don't ring a single bell in my head because she'll probably laugh at me.

"It's scary, I know, but you just have to skip over the titles and get to the notes, it's going to make it so much easier for you if you just remember key words, because remember that the examiner is also marking you on knowledge of basic rules." She explains but right now, I've never been more bothered about seeing so many colours on one page.

"So for example if you see a question with a circle on the page, as long as you put down that a circle always equals to 360 degrees, you've instantly got yourself an extra mark and that extra mark might just be the mark that's going to get you from just below average, to above average, because at the end of the test, all those easy one marks that you collected will add up, and they'll easily get you 30 marks from the whole test." she further explains because she probably thinks I've seen a ghost judging me by my face.

I nod my head pretending I understood that, "Yeah, sounds easy."

"Okay, I need to know your strengths and weaknesses to really help you get you up to speed, where are you so far with maths?"

"Erm, I don't know?" that came out more insecure than it should've.

"C'mon Dylan, this is grade 10 mathematics, the questions are going to be harder than what I have in these notes."

I shake my head and stand up from the bench, I knew this was a bad idea, I hate this subject with a passion. Why do they need to make a subject so hard and then we're never gonna fucking use equations in our lives ever again.

"Thanks Maddie but no thanks, I can't do this." I state and pick my backpack up from the ground, making my way home.
