"Sooo... uh, how's school going for you."

As you and Kai enjoy your lunch, the two of you chat about whatever comes to mind. It was a pretty enjoyable conversation and you were having a good time so long as you weren't wondering whether or not you were on a date with him.

"Well actually I just started ACRT arborist training," Kai excitedly tells you, "how about you?"

"Wow that's awesome that you're helping the environment Kai-chan!"

At the use of your nickname for him, you can tell he tenses up.Β

"And, uh, for me I guess I've been doing alright in my classes but lately I've been having trouble focusing," you shrug.

"Oh, but Lev has been super helpful! He's been studying with me a lot lately!" you add to brighten the mood.

"What about you and Kenma?" he then bluntly asks.

"K-Kenma... nothing's going on between us," you say as if Kenma doesn't even exist.

"Right, well, I only asked because of last night. You were really upset and I just want to make sure you're okay."

Gazing up at Kai, you can see the sincerity in both his eyes and his tone. You take a moment to thank him before beginning to explain to him about your situation. You even express your confusion and feelings.

"Look Y/N I've known you for a while now. To me, it seems as though you're afraid of getting hurt. I know what we had in the past was something you didn't want but if you want to be with Kenma you shouldn't let that fear consume you."

You try to stifle a laugh as you somewhat agree with Kai's words.

"I mean who wouldn't be afraid of getting hurt," you whisper just loud enough for Kai to hear.

"Ya know even though Kenma can seem withdrawn he's a good guy and he'd tell you if something was wrong between the two of you. Talking to him might be your best option," he says while trying to be as understanding as possible.

"You're probably right," you sigh, "It just... what about Shiro?"

"What about her?" he quips, causing you to finally make eye contact with him, "he has things in common with her, sure, but he never said it was anything more than a friendship, right?"

"Dammit, Kai," you groan, "why are you so much smarter than me."

"You let your emotions get the better of you this time," he admits, "but it has nothing to do with smarts. You aren't stupid, Y/N."

Still looking at the man before you, you can't help but feel so sorry for the way you had treated him in the past. It's almost as though you don't deserve his kindness.

You flash Kai a quick smile before rolling your eyes playfully at him.

"How can you read me like a book, Kai-chan," you say while letting out a small laugh.

"Just lucky I guess," he shrugs.

Your moment with Kai soon gets interrupted by your waiter bringing you the check.Β

"So what am I thinking now, then?" you ask as you turn your gaze back to him.

"Split the check?"

"May we?"

Kai nods and the two of you decide to split the check, settling your nerves even more before the two of you leave the building.

"So about that ACRT training," you ask as the two of you walk back onto campus, "that's something you do outside of Nekoma, right?"

You look over at Kai who seems a bit shocked that you care to learn more. However, he happily agrees to tell you about it.

"Yeah this is my last year here but I'm thinking of working in vegetation management which is what the ACRT training is for."

You let Kai talk for a little while about his plans. You can tell by the way he's rambling on and on that he probably has only told one or two people about this, if any at all. You feel a bit happier with your relationship with him knowing that he's able to open up to you just as you usually do to him.

Once the two of you get near your buildings, you say yet another thing that surprises your friend.

"Would you mind if I came over for a bit?" you ask, "It just, I don't want to go back to my room and force myself to study... yet anyway."

Kai, noticing the tone of dread in your statement, agrees and the two of you go back to his dorm.

For a while, you both watch tv on the couch in his dorm's common room. It was your turn to be surprised when Kai gave you your own blanket and enough space to feel comfortable as you sat together.

"H-Hey Kai?" you ask as you look over to your friend during the ad break, "do you mind waiting for me to come back from the bathroom to start the show?"

"Well, yeah of course," he laughs, "I'm not going to watch it without you. Do you know where the bathroom is?"

"Umm, I think so," you nod, knowing full well you have no idea where the bathroom is.

After departing from his room you make your way through the halls looking for the girls' room. On the way there you find yourself, unfortunately, run into two people that you didn't think you would see. At the sight of seeing the two walk together casually, a sinking feeling sets in your stomach.

Goddammit, what the hell, why do I feel sick all of a sudden?

You continue walking hoping that, even though they were about to walk right past you, they wouldn't notice you. However, your eyes catch with one of theirs right before you pass.

"Hi," you choke out as your eyes lock with your roommate.

Shiro gives you a polite, innocent smile back as she passes by. The other, however, barely even nods at you.

Once the couple passes by, you turn around and burn holes into the blonde setter's head.

Damn Kenma, why does he always have to get in my head without even trying?

You continue to stomp away, looking for the bathroom, until you bump into yet another person.

Grunting in annoyance, you mutter more curses and attempt to walk past them. However, they grab roughly onto your arm and don't allow you to leave.

"What's your deal?!" they ask.

Because your mind is clogged with only thoughts of Kenma, the voice of the person before you doesn't register in your mind. Only your own voice is what you can hear clearly.

"My deal?!" you groan before turning around, "you bumped into me!"

When you turn around, your eyes are met with narrow, hazel eyes staring directly into your soul.

At that moment, you knew you fucked up.
