“Hi,” Ian’s voice echoed from behind me as I scooped the bugs from out of his pool. I hadn’t realized anyone was home. He scared me so much that I nearly fell in the pool. He couldn’t just pop up behind people like that. It was way too early to sneak up on anyone.

“Didn’t mean to scare you,” he said as he squeezed my shoulder. “I brought you a cup of lemonade. It’s on the table if you’re thirsty. Don’t work too hard.”

“Thanks,” I replied as he walked over towards his patio table, taking a seat. He sat there, typing on his computer as I finished up his pool. It was weird having him sitting outside just a few feet away from me. I could feel his eyes on me every so often. I think I preferred when he was pissed at me and left my money in the mailbox. It was less awkward.

After I returned Ian’s pool tools, I brushed my hands against my jeans and grabbed the lemonade from the table, gulping it down happily.

It was about ninety degrees outside, and sweat was dripping down my neck. I felt disgusting. We were already hitting some of the hottest days of the summer, and it was only June.

“Any big plans for the weekend?” Ian asked curiously, his eyes not leaving his computer screen. “I hear your mother is going out of town.”

“Nothing major,” I replied casually. “My boyfriend is coming up today for the weekend.”

Ian closed his laptop shut as soon as I mentioned my boyfriend. “Oh? Well that’s something. You must have a pretty special weekend planned.”

I shook my head, as I placed the glass on the table. “No. Not really. We’re probably just going to hang out. What about you?”

Ian shrugged. “I’m probably just going to be writing. Alan is away. He’s going to be in New York until Sunday. So it’ll just be me, my novel and Hercules.”

“Well I hope you have a productive weekend,” I said politely. Even small talk between Ian and I was weird. It would take time though. Time was all we needed to move past this awkward phase. Hopefully, Ian and I would be able to be friends again - some day.

“Don’t forget your money,” Ian said opening his wallet and handing me one hundred dollars.

“It’s only fifty,” I replied about to hand him the bill back. Ian shook his head.

“Consider it a bonus,” he insisted, pushing my hand away. “Take your boyfriend somewhere nice.”

“Thanks,” I nodded, waving to him as I walked out of his backyard. I shoved the bill into my back pocket as I slowly walked on the sidewalk towards my house. Jeremy was going to be here any second. I should have been happier, but I couldn’t get my mind off of Ian. He was being so nice about everything. I just wish things were different between us. Out of all weekends, he had to be home alone, while I was with Jeremy. Now all I could think about was him sitting in his house by himself working on his novel. He’d no doubt be thinking about me.

Fuck. I hated that I still had feelings for him. Maybe I just needed to see Jeremy. Hopefully, he’d take my mind off of Ian.

As soon as I walked into my driveway, a taxi cab pulled up. Perfect timing. I chewed on my lip as Jeremy walked out of the cab, slinging his bag across his shoulder. A wide grin appeared on his face as soon as he saw me. I smiled back, grabbing his other bag from his hand as he paid the taxi driver.

There was something different about him. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it until I walked behind him. He had cut his hair. His shoulder length blonde hair was gone. There was not one strand of hair covering his neck.

“Jeremy, what have you done to your hair?” I chuckled as I ran my fingers across his blonde hair. He rolled his eyes as he walked up my driveway towards the front door.

“It’s too hot for the summer, so I cut it,” Jeremy retorted. “And you hate it, don’t you?”

I shook my head, frowning at him, as I pushed open the front door. “I can’t believe you did this. I’m going to miss the bun and the ponytails. I think I’ll miss the hair ties the most.”

“Shut up,” Jeremy scoffed, shoving me as he dropped his bags onto the floor. He took a breath, staring at me for a moment with that stupid smile on his face. I narrowed my eyes at him. He was acting very suspicious.

“Well,” Jeremy said waiting for me to do something.

“What?” I asked not sure what he wanted from me.

“You don’t see your boyfriend for nearly five weeks and this is how you react,” he huffed. “I expected a big welcome. Pizza would have been nice. I’m starving.”

I rolled my eyes. “I literally just got out of work, Jer. I’m still sweaty. You can literally smell me. How about we drop your stuff off in my room? You unpack. I’ll shower. Then I’ll order a pizza.”

“Sounds good,” Jeremy said picking his bags up and following me to my bed room. “But you forgot one thing.”

“What?” I asked lugging his heavy suitcase up the stairs.

“You forgot me kicking your ass in Call of Duty,” he retorted.

“You’re kidding me,” I huffed as I dropped his suitcase in my room. “Shit, Jer. Is that what’s in this bag?”

“Yah. My Xbox One and a few games,” Jeremy said as he dropped his backpack on the ground.

“And I thought we weren’t going to fight this weekend,” I retorted, flicking him in the forehead.

“We wouldn’t fight if you didn’t cheat,” he huffed. “I don’t get why you just can’t face the fact that I’m a better player than you.”

I rolled my eyes. “We’ll see about that, Jer. Set it up.”

Jeremy pulled his suitcase towards him, unzipping it as I pulled my shirt over my head. I sucked my teeth. He had been lying when he said he brought a few games over. He had packed nearly his entire collection. I liked video games, but Jeremy clearly had an obsession.

Just as I started unbuckling my pants, I glanced over to see Jeremy staring at me. I rolled my socks up and threw it at him.

“Stop eyefucking me,” I teased as he stood up from the ground, cocking that devilish grin of his at me. He looped one finger in my jeans, pulling me towards him until our bodies were pressed up against each other’s. His hands glided up my waist and onto my cheeks, as he pressed his lips against my mine. His kiss was soft, and tender, not at all as aggressive as Ian’s was.

Shit. There I was thinking about him again. Why couldn’t I get him out of my head?

Why was I feeling guilty about it? I shouldn’t feel guilty.  After all, he had kissed me. It wasn’t like I walked into his house expecting it to happen. But I did enjoy it. So technically I had cheated. I had to tell Jeremy what happened. We didn’t keep anything from each other.

I was so lost in my own thoughts; I hadn’t realized Jeremy had stopped kissing me.

Jeremy rested his hands on my shoulder for a minute. “You’re not kissing back, Ryder.”

“I’m sorry,” I immediately apologized. “I just got distracted.”

Jeremy groaned “Your boyfriend wants to make out and you get distracted. Nice, Ryder. I feel so appreciated.”

I grabbed his arm and pulled him back towards me just as he was about to walk away from me. I squeezed his hand in mine, as I kissed him on the lips. He pulled away again, sliding his hand out of mine.

“Now - What’s wrong?” I asked as he sat down on top of my bed, sighing. “I’m not distracted anymore.”

“It’s just - Ryder, I have to tell you something,” he began fumbling with his hands for a moment. “Promise me, you won’t get upset.”

I already didn’t like where this was going. I nodded as I shoved my hands deep in my pocket. This seemed like a serious talk. He wasn’t breaking up with me right. No. He couldn’t be. He wouldn’t have come all the way here to do that. Would he? Did he cheat? Is that what happened?

God, he looked so nervous. It must be bad.

“Do you promise?” Jeremy asked his tone more serious.

“Yes whatever just tell me,” I insisted as I bit down on my lower lip. The anticipation was killing me. Jeremy nodded, taking a deep breath for a moment.

“I went out with a guy at the restaurant I’ve been working at,” he began his eyes fixed on his hand. “But in my defense,  I just thought I was going to party. That’s what he said. But when I got to his house, it ended up being a party of . . . two.”

Jeremy glanced up at me, quickly glancing back down at his hands as soon as he saw the expression on my face. I didn’t like where this story was going not one bit. I was feeling guilty about Ian having kissed me and he had gone on a date with someone else.

“Could you not look at me like that? I feel guilty enough,” Jeremy sighed. “Apparently all of his friends had cancelled. If there was any friends in the first place. I'm not even sure. So it was the just the two of us. So we talked. I didn’t think much of it until he – “

I raised an eyebrow. “He what? What did he do, Jeremy?”

“He kissed me,” Jeremy finally said. “I’m sorry, Ryder. But I told him I had a boyfriend, and he respected that. He apologized. I just wanted to tell you about it. It didn’t feel right keeping it from you.”

I nodded, sighing. “It’s no big deal, Jer. As long as it didn’t mean anything. It didn’t mean anything right?”

“Not a thing,” Jeremy reiterated. “He’s not even my type. Thank god. I thought you’d be pissed at me. I wasn’t going to tell you until Sunday.  I didn’t want to spoil the weekend, but I’m glad I got that off of my chest.”

“Yeah,” I nodded. “Yeah. Speaking of getting things off of our chest, I have to tell you something. Promise me, you won’t get mad.”

Jeremy raised an eyebrow. “I guess I can. What’s up?”

“Well I saw Ian the other day,” I began. As soon as I mentioned his name, Jeremy grew quiet. He didn’t even look at me. I knew at that moment if I told him what had actually happened between Ian and I, he wouldn’t forgive me. Considering he knew all of the history between Ian and I, and how much our break-up affected me. He would never believe the kiss meant nothing to me.

So, I lied. Well it wasn’t a complete lie. I just left out the part about us kissing.

“It’s nothing major,” I continued. “He wanted me back. I told him I was seeing someone who was very special to me.”

Jeremy glanced up at me, his blue eyes finding their way on mine. “Really? You told him that. How did he react?”

“Well he has been taking every opportunity to show me that he’s moved on,” I huffed.

“What an asshole,” Jeremy scoffed. “He never deserved you, Ryder. You’re a good guy. You don’t need that old fuck. When you’re thirty, he’ll be like fifty. He’ll be old and decrepit by then. You and I will be thirty and hot, probably living together in a loft somewhere.”

I chuckled as I wrapped my arms around him. “A loft? Fancy.”

Jeremy nodded as he walked to my window, pulling my shades up. “Pear Street will be a faded memory by then. Wait a minute? Is that a pool next door? Please tell me that’s one of the pools you clean and you have complete and total access.”

“She’s actually away for the weekend, so if you want to –“ Before I could even finish the words, Jeremy cut me off.

“Yes! I want to! Right after we eat that pizza because I’m starving,” Jeremy groaned falling back onto my bed. I grabbed my phone, quickly ordering the pizza.

After Jeremy and I demolished a large pizza and had a couple of beers, we headed over to Tillman’s place sometime in the evening. It was still pretty warm out, even though the sun had set. The moon was shining brightly against the sky. It was actually kind of romantic. Me and Jeremy doing a late night swim. His cuteness never ceases to surprise me.

“What are you jumping in in your boxers?” I asked as Jeremy started pulling his shirt over his head. “Because I have extra swim shorts.”

Jeremy rolled his eyes as he kicked his pants off, followed by his boxers. Well, I guess that answered my question. I bit my lip as he jumped inside the pool without even hesitating.

I was still stuck on the fact that his boxers were in a pile right next to my foot. I never knew Jeremy had a wild side. He was definitely buzzed from those beers.

“What are you waiting for, Ryder?” he shouted as he pushed his hair out of his face. “Aren’t you like part fish?”

“Turn around first,” I chuckled as he faced the opposite direction. I pulled my shirt over my head, tossing it beside Jeremy’s. I unbuckled my pants quickly kicking it from my feet. I took a deep breath and then kicked my boxers off, jumping into the pool beside Jeremy. Water splashed into the air, catching Jeremy in the face.

I surfaced behind him, wrapping my arms around his waist, and pulling him towards me. Jeremy faced me, bringing his lips onto mine. The taste of chlorine stung my taste buds as his tongue smacked against my own. I groaned as Jeremy’s lips fell onto my neck, biting and sucking every inch of it until moans were echoing out of my mouth.

The pool might have been cold, but thanks to Jeremy, my body was heating up quickly. I could feel the blood rushing to my groin as my member stiffened with each kiss.

“God I missed you,” I muttered underneath my breath as Jeremy bit on my ear, sending a wave of chills down my spine. “If you keep doing that, I might not ever let you leave.”

“Good,” Jeremy huffed as he traced his fingers down my stomach and onto my shaft. My eyes opened wide as his hands moved down my shaft. I bit my lip as I glanced over towards Ian’s place. Call me paranoid, but I could have sworn I saw him standing at his window, watching us.

“Stop it Jer,” I said taking his hand off of me. “I think I heard something.”

Jeremy glanced around for a moment. “I don’t hear anything, Ryder. Stop playing around. You know I get cranky when I’m horny.”

“Jer, we’re not having sex in my neighbor’s pool,” I huffed. “You know how many times she’s done it in here.”

Jeremy rolled his eyes. “Fine. We can have sex in her bedroom with the shades wide open. I wonder if Peeping Tom next door will like that.”

“Peeping Tom?” I repeated glancing over at Ian’s place. Jeremy nodded.

“Yeah some guy was watching us from that window,” Jeremy said pointing over at Ian’s place. “Some pervert probably.”

“Ian lives there, Jer,” I reiterated. “You saw him, and you didn’t say anything.”

“Oh does he?” Jeremy said as he climbed out of the pool, stark naked. He pulled his boxers on in one quick motion and moved towards the fence. I quickly jumped out of the pool, struggling to pull my clothes on as Jeremy climbed over it.

“Blondie! Get back here!” I rasped as he disappeared over the fence. I swore underneath my breath as I struggled to climb the fence after him. When I finally made it over, I found Jeremy standing on Ian’s diving board, pissing into his pool. On any other occasion, I would have been slightly amused by Jeremy’s antics. But I was the one who had to clean the pool.

I shook my head as I ran over towards him, grabbing his arm and pulling him away from Ian’s pool.

“Shit! I nearly pissed on my foot, Ryder,” he whined as he pulled his boxers back up to his waist.

“I can’t believe you just did that,” I huffed hitting him in the back of the head. “I clean his pool.”

Jeremy shook his head. “You clean his pool? When were you going to tell me that? What is that some fantasy of his? Fucking the pool boy.”

“It’s nothing like that,” I argued as Jeremy threw my hand off of him. “I just clean the pool. That’s it. Nothing more, blondie.”

Jeremy wasn’t having it though. He couldn’t believe that anything between Ian and I was innocent. Even after I had told him that I shot Ian down. I hadn’t realized we were still arguing in Ian’s backyard until Ian’s backlight came on.

“Hello,” Ian’s voice echoed from his patio. Jeremy’s eyes flickered to Ian’s for a moment, before shooting back to mine.

I had a feeling this was going to be a long night.
