Monet DaSilva

I was exhausted from last night but here I was bright and early, sitting on the floor of the basement flipping through my textbooks. I was making sure all the references matched up with the cue cards I had made. I was hiding out here all morning while the others slept; I knew the moment they woke up and saw me studying on spring break, they would make it into a joke that I wasn't here for. I was trying the best to break out of the granny mode but I still couldn't manage failing any of the exams next week.

"Perfect." I spoke to myself as I shut the text book and looked down at the cue cards in front of me. I crossed my legs, grabbed a pile and began to go over them; quoting each law, date of law establishment as well as it's reasoning.

I heard a sound in the midst of my studying, and I looked towards the door to see if someone was playing a joke but it hadn't been opened. "What the hell..." I stood up and began to walk towards the door when I saw a head pop out from around the corner the basement. Startled, I jumped; throwing my cue cards every where.

"Oh, my goodness!" I groaned, realizing it was just Myles who had probably used the other set of stairs to get down here. He wore a small smile which meant scaring me was his whole plan. "Look what you did." I said, before crouching down to pick up the cue cards. "You can't just pop up on people like that."

"Well, you're in my creating space anyways so these are the consequences."

"You were sleeping and I needed a place to study."

"Dejounte's rich enough, why don't you ask him to buy you a place to study?" I glared at him and sucked my teeth. "I'm kidding." Myles crouched down, helping me gather up the cards. I stayed silent until we were finished and he handed his stack to me. I began to head upstairs but he wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me back downstairs.

"Have you lost your manners?"

"Thank you." I said dryly, I tried to move past him but he blocked me. "What do you want Myles?"

"We can't talk?"

"ABOUT WHAT?!" he placed his finger against my lip and shushed me. "I don't know where those fingers have been!" I said, slapping his hand away.

"Monet... just chill."

"No chilling, I have things to do and places to be. Now tell me, what do you want?"

"I...I just wante... I want you to listen to this song I wrote."

"As your girl."

"Monet, please."

"Please what?... I'd rather not."

"It's a remix of MD... the one I wrote for you."

"I could care less." I shrugged.

"I wanted Elijah to perform it on Friday."

"That's up to you... as far as I'm concerned those were all lies anyways. Nothing but some lyrics for you." I smirked.

I watched Myles run his hand against his face, a sigh escaped his lips. "Mo, I want to apologize for yesterday."

"Save it." I waved him off and tried to move him to the side but obviously I was no match to his strength.

"No, for real Monet. I wasn't able to sleep all night..."

"Take Melatonin."

"I couldn't stop thinking about what I said and how I crossed so many lines. You didn't deserve to be spoken to like that."

"Honestly Myles, it is what it is. I was wrong for thinking I actually knew you."

"You do know me, as well as I know you..."

"Clearly, I don't... like you said, they were all lies."

"Monet, let me explain."

"For what?" I whined, "can you just get out of my way. Your energy is blowing mine right now."

"Monet, I had to say those things... I ... I... being around you is just more tempting than I expected it to be. You know why I'm here with Karla. If I didn't need it then you know this whole experience would've been so much different."

"Exactly why you should just do your thing... and leave me alone." I flashed him a fake smile. "Now can I go upstairs?"

"Monet, the feelings I have for you are so real that right now just standing here is hard for me. You're an amazing girl and I got mad respect for the person you are. I just wish things were different." He used his thumb bad to lift my head up so I could look into his eyes. "Every single word I've said to you was real, I just needed a way to get you a way from me and even with doing that here I am... still failing at trying to fight this feeling."

"Myles..." I pulled away from him. "I've been through too much, and the games you're playing with me is the last thing I need in my life right now. So please, don't confuse me more than I already am right now."

"Fine, answer me this one question."

"I'm listening."

"That nigga, are you actually feeling him or is this a way for you to rub not having you in my face.?"

"Dejounte really is a gentleman, he's sweet and very fun to hang around. It would be too soon for me to say I'm feeling him but yes I do enjoy his company so far." Myles just shook his head. "What?"

"I just don't trust him... that's all."

"C'mon Myles. You have no reason to be saying that, you haven't even held a conversation with him."

"I don't need to, I know niggas like him... something just seems too good to be true and guys like that usually have a secret..."

"Well hopefully I find that thing out before I get in too deep, as for now; I think I'm going to enjoy his company some more. Instead of getting in the way of your relationship." I walked off again, was nearly up the stairs when I felt his arms wrap around my waist again, "Myl-." Before I could speak his lips were against mine, and his hand placed perfectly against the small of my back. I should've fought it but it felt so... perfect. I even dropped my cue cards again just so I could wrap my arms around his neck.

Myles' hand went from my back down to my ass, that he gave a squeeze as the kiss intensified. I couldn't even contain the moan that escaped my lips. I felt passion, ecstasy and love... Myles sucked on bottom lip before sliding his tongue into my mouth; our tongues wrestled with one another and he pressed me up against the wall, his hands making their way under my crop top.

"Monet!" I pulled away from Myles quickly at the sound of Zahra's voice, she opened the door and her eyes were widened. Even though she didn't see anything, Zahra had the expression of someone that did. "There's a delivery for you..." she spoke slowly.

"Oh, thank you." I adjusted my clothing before I continued walking up the stairs back into the house, I looked behind me to see Zahra whisper something to Myles, he nodded then stepped into the house as well. Karla was out in the porch taking a phone call thankfully, and Elijah was still knocked out on the couch.

I went to the door to see a delivery man holding up the biggest bouquet of roses I had ever seen. "Ms. DaSilva?" he asked.

"Yes... that's me."

"Delivery from Mr. Murray!" he placed them into my arms and a smile appeared on my face. He listened.

"Thank you."

"Anytime, have a wonderful day."

"You as well." I shut the door then turned to see Zahra, her arms were crossed across her chest. "Aren't these beautiful?" I cooed, sniffing them as I walked past her and into the kitchen to place the flowers on the counter.

"Monet..." she said.

"I don't want to talk about it, please."

"I'm disappointed in you."

"It was nothing."

"Well, I'd hope so... because look." Zahra pointed to the porch, I looked out to see Myles kissing up on Karla's neck. "I doubt any of that is for some money..." I don't know why, but ... it hurt to see; I had been seeing this since I got here but this time I felt it. not because I was jealous but because they looked so happy; Myles included. Which is why I now didn't believe that this... was fake. The way he looked at her; it was undeniable. No one could fake that, I could tell that deep down he still had that love for her. Clearly, I was the only that felt something a couple moments ago. "Dejounte is a good guy Monet, don't lose him focusing on something like that."

"You're right." Myles glanced over at me and I looked away and exhaled. "Niggas aint shit anyways."

"They aint."

Dejounte Murray

My reggae playlist blasted from the stereo as I ran around my outdoor track for my tenth lap; sweat was dripping down my body, my eyes blurry from the tears that sat against my eyelashes. We were a few days into this spring break celebration, and I had to make sure I didn't miss a day in the gym; especially with a game that was a couple days away.

"10!" Bruce; my trainer yelled from his lawn chair, he blew his whistle then closed the new paper he was reading. I came to a halt and crouched down; trying to catch my breath. "A little slower than usual but you made it." he took the towel that hung from over his shoulder and dapped at the sweat on my forehead.

"I just had a late night, that's why."

"Expected, you are in Miami. However, please remember that getting distracted is not an option with the playoffs right around the corner."

"I understand." He handed me my water bottle and I didn't waste time taking it to the head. I wanted nothing more than to pass out at this point in time, but I had way too much on my agenda to afford that.

"Enjoy the rest of your day kiddo." Bruce said, patting my back.

"Thanks a lot man." I gave him a head nod before standing to my feet, stretching it out then walking through the doors that led into my villa. I headed upstairs to take a quick shower and change into an outfit fit for todays plans.

I did my hygiene then headed down the stairs into the kitchen. The space was filled with the aroma of breakfast. My stomach grumbled so loud that I watched my chef, who just so happened to be my best friend whip her head around and start giggling. "A niggas hungryyyy!" I whined.

"Watch your mouth!" my mother let out, she sat at the dining table with a cup of black coffee sitting in front of her; her head was buried in a crossword puzzle as usual. I rolled my eyes, kissed her forehead then pulled up a seat at the dining table. "I saw that."

"Yeah, yeah. So, you say." I unravelled my cutlery from the fancy napkin they were wrapped in. "Renee, I hope you got something good on the menu for me this morning." I rubbed my hands together.

"When have I ever let you down?" she walked over to my side, placed my napkin into my shirt then sat a covered plate in front of me. My mouth watered at the smell, she then walked over to my mom; placed the napkin on her lap then placed a dish in front of her as well and did the same for Bruce who joined us. "Enjoy."

I wasted no time lifting up the cover, to see egg whites, spinach, and a few pieces of turkey bacon on the plate meanwhile across from me; my mother's and Bruce's plate was filled with fluffy pancakes, an omelette, crispy, oily bacon and potatoes. "Okay... somethings definitely wrong with this picture here..." I looked over at Renee as she leaned against the back of my chair.

"What's the problem Dej?"

"Well first of all... this is half of what I'd normally eat. Everything looks dry and not as appetizing as hers." I pointed at my mom's dish.

"Dejounte, you know better than to point at me." My mother spoke, before drenching her pancakes with syrup.

"I'm sorry ma... but..." I covered the plate, then uncovered it again. "This can't be breakfast."

"Bruce told me to change up your meal plan for the week, he said with all the drinking you're doing; the least you can do is eat healthy." She patted my cheek. "Now, eat up and don't insult my food."

"I'm trying not too..." she walked off, giving my mom a high-five and I pouted as I raised my fork to eat the egg whites. "Snitch." I whispered to Bruce. The food wasn't as bad as it looked but when you had something like my mom's dish sitting in front of you, it was kind of hard to enjoy. I cleared my throat, "so what's the plan for today ma?"

"Chris is having that concert at South Beach; you promised to be in attendance but that isn't until later." Renee joined us at the table, with an overflowing plate of food. I stale faced her and she blew me a kiss. "At 1:30 you have that meeting with Adidas, you need to pop into a little charity game around 6, and after that could drop by South Beach."

"Sounds good." I pulled my phone out, looking to see the message I had got from Monet.

Monet:

You really didn't have to, but thank you so so much! You made my entire day!

10:59 AM

Me:

It's the least I could do after keeping you up with my boring ass last night.

I want to see you later, think you could fit me into your busy schedule?

11:02

Monet:

I think I may be able to work a little something out. What did you have planned?

11:05

Me:

I have to attend a charity a game around 6, then I'm going to stop by a party down by South Beach. Do you mind being my date?

11:08

Monet:

Hmmm.... As long as we can go to Burger Broz again first, I'm craving those fries from last night.

11:11

Me:

I got you, be ready for 4?

11:13

Monet:

Sounds good. See you later.

11:17

Me:

See u later beautiful

11:23

I had been enjoying her company so far, we clicked and that was rare. After the movie premiere we spent hours at Burger Broz until 3 AM just talking and getting to know each other more and even after that; her presence was so addicting that we were on the phone until the sleep became too powerful to fight.

Monet was the first thing on my mind this morning, I had to admit that I was feeling the girl already! I didn't understand where it was coming from but hiding emotions was something I'd never do; during one of our conversations last night Monet mentioned that someone never bought her flowers apart from her dad. So, I sent a bouquet of flowers over to her house to let her know that she was special and deserved it.

"Earth to Dejounte! Who's got you smiling like that?" Renee asked, leaning over to see my phone. "Monet?" she cooed.

"None of your business." I locked the screen the looked up to see both my mom and Bruce looking in my direction. "My bad, did I miss something?"

"I was asking if you're going to need security tonight?"

"Nah, I think I'm good for the most part."

"Now back to Renee's question."

"What about it?"

"I've been seeing the pictures on theshaderoom with you and that girl first at the club, then at Da Spot, the movie premiere last night... is this serious?" my mom removed her glasses and placed it onto the table, "because if so you know I'm going to need her to sign an NDA."

"Ma, chill... Monet isn't even like that."

"Remember the last time you said a girl wasn't like that?" she tilted her head to the side, "you nearly got your scholarships revoked with the amount of dirt she had on your name."

"Monet is the complete opposite of her ma, let's just leave that in the past."

"I'm not about to take any risks... was it a few day fling? Will you be seeing her again?"

"Yes, I will be."

"Then she needs to sign an NDA."

"Or not."

"Don't be ignorant Dej, your career is just taking off we can't make a single mistake."

"I'm a grown man, I got this. I'm just getting to know the girl, I'm not trying to get her caught up in the life of restrictions that I live. We're two young people enjoying time together... just let us."

"What do you not get? You're not some regular person... you have a lot writing on your name! After everything we've been through; we came from nothing and I'm not about to have some spring break hoe get in the way of that!"

"And this is where the conversation ends. Excuse me." I stood to my feet and covered my food. "Put this up for me Renee, I'll have it later."

I walked out to the front of the house where I slipped my feet into my 11s then grabbed my car keys. I stepped out of the house, slamming the door behind me. Once I got into the peace and serenity of my house I sighed and threw my head back against the head rest. I needed a moment just to gather myself; let out the negative energy and just try to focus on the positive.

A few minutes after my breathing exercise I reached to change my gear into drive when I heard a knock on the passenger side window. Renee gestured for me to open my window, and I did; she stuck her head in and looked around before looking straight into my eyes.

"What are you looking for?"

"Just making sure you didn't do it."

"Do what?"

"Hold your head up."

"What the..." Renee let herself in and slid into the passenger side; she tilted my head up but I snatched my face out of her grip. "What the hell are you talking about. You're making sure I didn't do what?

"That thing that you always turn to when your mom and you get into it. Your nose isn't red so you're clear to go."

"You're trippin." I shook my head.

"I'm not trippin, I'm your best friend. I know you like the back of my hand." She opened the glove compartment searching through it and finding nothing, she then checked under the seats, getting frustrated that it was all clear.

"Once again, you're trippin and I got a meeting to get to so if you could please excuse yourself." Renee fixed her hair then looked over at me once again. "What?!"

"I don't know where this new attitude came from but it's not like you. Telling me to mind my business, telling me to excuse myself. What the hell? I'm trying to protect you... just like old times."

"You lost those privileges the moment you got that rock on your left hand." I tapped on her ring.

"Dejounte."

"I'm not trying to talk about this right now, I want to be in a good mood for this meeting."

"Well we have to talk about it and soon. I want you to be happy for me, I never expected you as my own best friend to be so against me getting married."

"Renee... I was screwing you up until the night of your engagement. Why would I be happy about it?"

"Ugh! You knew what it was the moment you signed over to the Spurs."

"I expected love to change your mind about that."

"No, it never will... you know my situation. Being in the spotlight would do nothing but put me in the danger I've been running from my whole life."

"That doesn't even make sense to me... you know the nigga you're with now could make it to the NFL at any point in time."

"We made a vow to each other; the NFL isn't his dream like the NBA is yours. He wants to do something bigger with science."

"We could've worked something out, but instead you go ahead and get engaged to the nigga you told me not to worry about..."

"We all deserve happiness Dejounte... Kinglsey just so happens to be mine."

"I'd give anything Renee for us to just work it out... please don't go ahead with this."

She looked ahead, "I'd like to have your full and a hundred percent support with this just as I would support you."

I sat there silently, before shifting the gear into drive, my foot held the break and I glanced over at Renee. "... I have a meeting to get to." She sighed, then popped the door open and stepped out. I didn't even wait for her to shut it properly before I
