When I woke up the next morning, the other side of the bed was empty. I wondered where David was until I heard someone in the kitchen. Two minutes later, he came into the bedroom and sat down beside me.

"Morning. I made us some breakfast." David leaned down and gave me a kiss on the lips. Then he stood up and walked out of the room again. I got up and followed him into the kitchen. David must have been to the bakery, because there were fresh croissants on our plates. "Thank you.", I said to him and sat down.

"It was really nice seeing your parents again."

"Yeah, it was okay." Not looking him in the eye, I took a bite out of my croissant with Nutella on it. Don't judge, everyone loves Nutella.

"What's wrong with you Mae? Why are you so distant since last night?"

"Wow, you really have to ask? David I know this topic is annoying, but I feel like the only thing that matters for you is your job. You're either away on business trips or you talk about your job when you're home." I looked up and saw David getting angry.

"Mae, we've talked about this so many times and you know I can't change it! I won't quit my job just because of-"

"Just because of what, David? Just because of me? Why do you even want to be with me if all you care about is your job? I try so hard to make this work. Do you know how many times I want to scream at you to not go when you're leaving for a trip? I put so much effort into this, but it seems like you don't!"

I stood up and the stool I sat on fell down because of my quick movement. "Gosh Mae, don't be so overdramatic!"

I glared at David and returned to the bedroom to get changed.

I really don't know what else to do with David. Everything I said was true, he doesn't try hard enough to make this work. It feels like nearly every conversation we have is about his job, which means nearly every time we speak, it ends in a fight. Of course, I still have feelings for David and he is a very sweet guy, but do I really want to be in a relationship that doesn't make me happy any longer?

Sighing, I went back into the kitchen. David wasn't there anymore. Typical. After almost every fight we have, he goes out to meet a friend and comes back a few hours later. He tells me he's sorry and I forgive him. That's how our relationship has been for the last couple of months.

I put away what was left from our breakfast and sat down on the couch in the livingroom with my laptop. I spent the next hours planning lessons for next week and going through my mails. Some students actually took the chance to send me some pieces of their writing, which I proposed to them in class to see what they can improve. I enjoyed reading their works and was pretty surprised, because a few were very good.

After another hour, I realized that there was something I completely forgot about yesterday. The school's, or should I say, Marc's soccer match. Even though I knew I wouldn't be able to be there, I wish I would have. It would've been way more fun than the dinner I had at my parents' house.

David came back at 10pm, with a big bouquet of red roses. He smiled and handed me the flowers. I took them, but his smile didn't impress me at all.

"You know you cannot solve every problem with flowers, right?" I took out a vase and put some water in them, before doing the same with the roses.

"Mae..."

"No, David. If you still want to be in this relationship, you have to do something about it. Not me You."

At this point, he seemed desperate. "What do you want me to do?"

"I don't know David. I don't know." With that, I placed the vase onto the dining table and then went into the bathroom to shower.

On Monday morning, I woke up with a headache. I was in a bad mood the whole day, but I tried to not let it out on my students. The day went by rather slowly, and I was happy when I got home. On top of my headache which was still present, it had been raining all day. Not the kind of weather you would expect at the end of August. I hadn't spoken a word with David all day, which was partly because he was at work until 8 o'clock, but also because I just didn't want to. I told him my opinion and now he has to decide where we go from here.

I felt much better on Tuesday morning, remembering that I had to pick up Lilly from her kindergarten after school today. I hopped into the shower and put on some clothes afterwards.

Two hours later, I sat in my classroom. The students were reading a chapter from Shakespeare's Othello and answering some questions about it. After ten more minutes, I spoke up.

"Okay guys, you should be finished by now. Who wants to start with the first question, which was how you would describe Othello and Desdemona's relationship?"

A couple students, mostly girls, raised their hands. In the back, I saw Marc raising his hand aswell. "Marc."

H began to speak. "It's a forbidden love, well, at least in the eyes of Desdemona's father, his daughter should not be involved with a man like Othello. So yeah, forbidden love it is."

"That's right, Marc. You see, Shakespeare has a thing for forbidden love stories, -" I was interrupted by the bell ringing. "Oh, I didn't realized it was the end of class already. No homework for you, we will continue our discussion tomorrow."

While packing away my books, the class made their way out of the room. I picked up my bag and saw marc standing in the doorframe. When I looked at him, he began to speak.

"You weren't at the match on Saturday." His voice didn't show any emotion.

"Yeah, I was at my parents' house for dinner, but I'll think about going to the next match." I smiled and made my way over to him. When I stepped out of the room, he closed the door behind me.

"I'm looking forward to seeing you in the crowd." Again, he smiled and made his way past me. While walking, he lightly touched my arm with his hand. I quickly turned around, but he walked straight towards the front door. I looked at my arm and then up at him again. He didn't have to touch me. There was plenty of room in the hall. He didn't have to touch me. Why did he? He didn't have to touch me!

When school was over, I drove to the kindergarten my sister Lilly was in, which was only five minutes from Barkley High. I could hear kids screaming from outside and when I opened the front door, the screams and laughs were even louder. Smiling, I made my way to the room my sister was normally in.. I looked around the room, but couldn't find her.

To my right, I saw one of the teachers, Miss Johnson, and made my way over to her.

"Hey Miss Johnson, I'm here to pick up Lilly, do you know where she is?"

She looked around here, but couldn't find her either. "I'm sorry, but I guess she's with her friend Emma. The both of them never leave each other's side."

"They're probably in their little corner in the hall. They are always there when I pick up Emma." I turned around to see who that voice belongs to and came face to face with Marc. I must have looked pretty funny, because he began to laugh. "Emma is my sister."

"Oh hi, Marc. You're probably right! Excuse me now, I have to prepare the food for the kids who are staying longer!" With that, Miss Johnson left to go to another room. I looked at Marc again and he was still smiling.

"Come on, I'll show you where they are." He nodded towards the hall and started walking. I followed him.

A couple seconds later, he turned to his left and I saw past him. There they were, sitting on a huge pile of pillows. Both girls had a doll in their hands and were talking to each other.

"That's so cute!" I said to myself, but loud enough for Marc to hear.

"Yeah, it is. They sit here every day playing with these dolls."

I looked at Marc and asked him if he picks up his sister often.

"Every day. Our parents come home at 4, so I'm the only one who can pick her up."

After he finished his sentence, Emma looked up and saw her big brother. She stood up and came running towards us.

"Marcy!" Marc picked her up and now Lilly made her way over to us, too.

"Hey princess!" Lilly smiled at me and gave me a tight hug.

"Look, Mae, this is my best friend Emma! She invited me to her birthday party on Saturday!"

"Wow, really? That's great!" I smiled at my little sister and then turned to look at Emma who was still in Marc's arms.

"Hi Emma I'm Lilly's sister Mae." I held out my hand, but Emma didn't take it. Instead, she shyly looked at Marc who smiled at her.

"It's okay, sis. Mae is a really nice girl, you can give her your hand." Emma looked at me and slowly took my hand.

"Can we go home now, Mae? I'm hungry." Lilly took my hand and started pulling me towards the wardrobe. I let her drag me there and she took her jacket. Marc and Lilly also started to prepare to leave.

"Are we going to our place or yours?", my sister asked me.

"Neither. We'll go to McDonalds. I know mum and dad never take you there, so don't tell them!" I winked at her and took her bag.

"can we go to McDonalds, too, Marc?" I turned around and saw Emma looking at her brother with big eyes. "Please!"

Marc looked at her, then at me. "If Mae and Lilly are okay with that?"

I wasn't quick enough to answer, because Lilly started jumping up and down. "Yes, yes! Can they come with us Mae?" My sister looked at me with hope in her eyes. Looking at Marc, I saw that he had the exact same look on his face. When she looked at me like that, I couldn't say no to anything, even though I wasn't sure what to think about having lunch with Marc. "Sure."
