'Sir, I love your daughter and I promise I will always keep her happy.' A young man stood in the centre of the huge living room facing a fuming older man with confidence. The older man held Sadaf's hand.

'Keep her happy? How? You can't even afford to the basic necessity for my daughter. She is used to this life, life where she is pampered, treated like a princess.'

'I will try my best to give her everything, all the happiness.'

'How? With your pathetic love and tall claims. My dear, you need money, money for happiness, for comfortable life...to live. You can't afford this life she lives.' Mr. Malik yelled at the man.

'I will work very hard, I will earn lots of money. Sir, we need love as much as money for happy life and I give them both to Sadaf. I love her.'

Mr. Malik scoffed, 'I know your love, you don't love Sadaf, you love the money...my money.'

'I don't want any financial help from you. I will manage....'

'Ahhh...' Mr. Malik waved his hand and Mizan stopped talking, 'Words, all empty words. Get out before I throw you out.'

'But sir...'

'GUARDS...GUARDS...'

Later that night, Ahyan was in his study doing his chemistry assignment when he heard his mother's panicking voice. Ahyan glanced at the clock, 12 am, what happened so late in the night? He wondered.

He walked carefully to his parent's room and peeped in, his father looked angry and tensed while his mother was in tears. He frowned.

Ahyan wondered what happened but he didn't dare interrupt his parents. He went to his sister's room but there was no one there. He is surprised.

Next day, he was shocked to know that his sister had eloped with that young man. Ahyan had seen his parents condition then, they were devasted and angry. His own love turned into hate. He hated his sister for doing what she did.

'He is my son, Mizan and that's my daughter in law, Sadaf.' Ahyan is snapped back to reality when he heard Mrs. Siddiqui speak from beside her. Ahyan is speechless, he can't believe for so long he was with the family of those who took his sister from him.

Mrs. Siddiqui took the photo frame from him, a tear drop escaped her eye. She sighed sadly.

'They are no more.' She said admiring the photo.

Ahyan recollected Mrs. Siddiqui telling about her son and daughter-in law died in an accident, now he is stunned to know his sister is no more.

'Sadaf!' Ahyan whispered, tears prickling his eyes. The only one thing he could think about is his sister's smiling face, warm embrace and encouraging words. Ahyan turned around and hurriedly walked away. He didn't even acknowledge Mahdia who stood just outside the room. She is stunned to see Ahyan hurriedly walk away. He didn't turn around once before walking out and slamming the door shut behind him.

Mahdia looked at her mother wondering if she had said something to upset Ahyan, but her mother looked as clueless as she was.

'Mahdia!' her mother called as she quickly grabbed her overcoat from the coat rack and left the house.

'What is happening?' Mariam came out from her room yawning and rubbing her eyes. With all the noise, she had woken up.

Ahyan walked furiously, aimlessly through the quiet suburban area on chilly Paris night. Tears streaming down his cheek, he didn't bother wiping them. Fresh tears brimming in his eyes.

Mahdia had come out just in time to see him walking away. She struggled hard to catch up with him but he was too fast. She stopped when Ahyan had stopped. Mahdia looked up, it is very cloudy and she knew it might snow soon. She needed to make sure Ahyan goes home before the weather makes it difficult, he is also not wearing any warm clothes. She took a step but stopped when she saw him fall to his knees. She frowned. She got worried when she noticed him shake.

The news of his sister's death came as a shock to him, something that shook him badly. He remembered his sister smiling and talking to him, she was happy and next moment, he is hearing she is no more. She had died, when? Suddenly, all the hatred built up vanished and now feeling of regret engulfed him. Regrets, regrets and more regrets.

Being Sadaf's brother it was his duty to be with his sister, to protect her and here his sister had died and he didn't even know, what kind of brother is he? She had been dead for ten years now and he had been living thinking she was alive, he didn't know she is no more amongst them? He didn't care to know? Regrets. After she had eloped why didn't Ahyan look for her? Why didn't he have his parents look for her? Police would surely have found her? Why didn't they just accept Mizan and Sadaf, at least she would have been alive. Regrets, regrets and more regrets.

Ahyan screamed, taking out all his frustration.

Mahdia panicked and ran to him.

'Ahyan!' she kneeled beside him. She is worried looking at him cry. She has never seen any grown-up man cry this bad, and she had not expected Ahyan to break down like this. It is not something her mother must have said.

Ahyan didn't respond he continued to cry. His cries echoed in the cold dark night.

'What happened?' Mahdia held his cheek and tried to turn his head to look at her but he doesn't. Mahdia removed his glasses, he didn't protest.

She wiped his tears, but it was no use because fresh tears kept flowing from his eyes.

'Ahyan!' Mahdia is very worried now. She moved her arm around him and made him lean forward resting his head on her shoulder. She hugged him, caressing his arm.

'Kya hua, Ahyan! Please tell me.' she said. Mahdia had tears in her own eyes, seeing Ahyan cry so badly is hurting her.

Soon, as expected it began snowing. Slowly Ahyan held Mahdia's arms, she is little relieved because he is responding little.

'Shh....' she whispered caressing his arm and back. Ahyan buried his head in the crook of her neck and continued to cry. Mahdia closed her eyes, tears falling from her eyes. She hugged his shaking figure tightly, pressing her cheek against the top of his head. She could feel his tear wet her neck and collarbone, she didn't stop him, he continued to cry loudly.

After a while Ahyan stopped crying, he realised he is arms of the girl whose brother had run away with his sister and then she died. Ahyan pushed Mahdia and she fell back. She is stunned.

'Ahyan!' she called as he got up taking his glasses. He stood there with his fingers curled in a tight fist.

She got up and placed a palm on his shoulder. Ahyan wore his glasses and turned around. Mahdia is stunned seeing fury in his eyes.

'Don't.... you.... dare... touch... me and don't dare come in front of me.... I am done with you.' he said angrily.

Mahdia is shocked. Ahyan glared at her, his breathing uneven and his nose flaring. Ahyan turned around and began walking again. Mahdia is numb for a minute not knowing what wrong has she done.

She shook her head and ran up to him, she held his arm and he stopped.

'Ahyan!' her voice trembled. She clenched his arm tightly, else she feared she might fall, she felt her knees weak- is she going to lose him forever?

'I... am.... Sorry.... If...if... I did something to.... hurt you....but please don't....leave me...I...love you.' she pleaded holding his arm tightly, her vision blurred with her tears. Ahyan looked at her and felt his anger melt.

What is he doing? Taking someone else's anger out on someone else? That too on the woman he loves. But then the truth will not change. Perhaps Mahdia and he aren't meant to be.

He held her hand, Mahdia relaxed little feeling his warm touch in the otherwise cold night, the snow making it worse.

'I am sorry, Mahdia.' Her smile faded when he moved her hand from his, 'But we...this can't happen...we can't be together.' He said.

'Why?' Mahdia's lips trembled as she looked up into his eyes.

Ahyan sighed, he shook his head, 'I can't tell you...' Ahyan said and turned to walk again. As he walked away Mahdia felt angry. Enough is enough, he can't just walk away without giving her an answer, she deserves to know.

'Mr. Ahyan Malik. If you are leaving me at least tell me what is my fault?' Mahdia called from behind him and Ahyan stopped. He turned around. Mahdia is fuming standing few distance from him. He stood still and within minutes Mahdia marched towards him. She grabbed his collar and pulled him closer.

'I love you, Ahyan and I had always loved you, and you.... are just walking away. You know what you never took my love seriously. You don't love me the way I love you.' she said angrily. Ahyan held her palms and moved her hand off his collar.

'Think whatever you want Mahdia, but the truth is that I love you and there is another truth and that is...we can't be together.'

'Why?' Mahdia glared at him.

Ahyan sighed looking away for a second before looking back at her, 'Because your brother killed my sister.' He said calmly. Talking about his sister being dead brought fresh tears in his eyes. He looked at her, her expression changing from being angry to confuse. She stared at him for a while before saying,

'Huh!'
