I could hear Kaius perfectly, his feet pounding against the ground as he rushed to get to me, maybe because he could feel my unhappiness? Or could he sense how uncomfortable I was? Could he hear my fear?

The third one sounded about right, the resonating sound of my heart beating against my rib cage so violently that I was beginning to think that it would explode, my knees shaking with the threat of giving out completely and my lips quivering as the tears began falling from my eyes.

But that couldn't be quite right, not at all, because I remember Mama always telling me, that when it came the time for her to let me go, that I would need to stay away from werewolves, especially ones who would call me their mate. Of course, at the time, I rolled my big doe blue eyes, full of innocence that always looked for the good, and promised that I would never, ever, even get as close to a werewolf that they would have the chance to talk to me, to be able to speak one word to me.

"Because the ones who call you their mate will never care about you," I could practically hear her saying.

She told me that mates would mess with my mind, confuse and hurt me to the point where I would be begging to come home, to go back to Mama.

Then I spent some real time with werewolves who talked about their life so openly to me and their views on mates were completely different.

I was told that you only get one mate, that it's a gift from the Moon Goddess herself and that it's something special. Not understanding what they meant, I nodded my head and smiled innocently, and then I met Kaius. One touch from him and tingles spread throughout my whole body, making me feel warm inside as I inhaled his scent that oddly calmed me to the point where I started believing that maybe Mama was wrong.

They said that the first part of the mate pull would be like nothing compared to being officially claimed, so they sighed and said, "What a pity that humans don't have mates."

Then again, maybe fear was the right answer, but it couldn't have been my fear that he was feeling instead it was his, his own fear.

What could he possibly be afraid of? I asked myself, scared of what Alpha Kendrick said to me, afraid of my response, terrified of me leaving him.

The door opened with an extreme amount of force that it nearly broke off its hinges, slamming against the wall in the hallway so hard that I wouldn't of been surprised if there was a giant dent in the wall.

Turning my head to look over my shoulder at the commotion, I saw Flynn, who was once standing in front of the door, go flying as Kaius picked him up by the back of the neck and threw him against the wall as if he weighed nothing.

My eyes widened as I watched Kaius, his body moving at uncomfortable angles, his top lip twitching and his head tilting to the side as soon as his sight landed on Alpha Kendrick, rage burning in his eyes. He looked over to me, something new flashing over his eyes as they softened at the sight of me, his arm reaching out.

I cowered back, he noticed.

Kaius went back to glaring daggers at Alpha Kendrick, snarling, "What did you do to her?"

"I didn't do anything," Alpha Kendrick paused, "it was you who got her so worked up."

Kaius's top lip pulled back as his teeth elongated, canines forming as he seethed, "What did you say to her?"

Alpha Kendrick only grinned, "All I did was be honest, I told her the truth. I thought that the stories of mates meeting each other for the first time is supposed to be good, something worth sharing, don't you think?"

Kaius shook with rage as he growled, "I said, what did you say to her?"

Alpha Kendrick looked at me, one eyebrow raised as his grin widened to the point where a full-blown smile was now on his lips. "I'm sure you can put two and two together, Amoret, that's the real Kaius right there-" he pointed to him, "-how long do you think it'll take him to talk to you just like that?"

Whimpering, I backed away from the both of them, watching them with the same fear in my eyes.

"I should get going," Alpha Kendrick announced and took a step towards the door, towards a very angry Kaius.

"You should," Kaius agreed in a deadly tone, "before I kill you."

Closing my eyes, I focused on the sound of Alpha Kendrick leaving.

A few minutes had passed, long minutes of unbearable silence, until it ended when Kaius finally calmed down and came closer to me. "Amoret?" His voice was soft and gentle as he spoke to me, the opposite of what he was.

Opening my eyes, I looked up at him, "Did you really do it? Did you kill him?"

His hands came up to cup my face, "Amoret, I-"

"Yes or no," I whispered sourly as he tilted my head back, my lips quivering with every word that slipped past them, "it-it's a yes or-or a no q-q-question, Kaius."

"Yes," he spoke quietly, full of guilt, "but I can explain, I-"

I shoved him away from me, pushing off his hands that sent sparks through me, stumbling backwards as a sob shook my whole body, "You-You killed him, you kill-killed my b-brother."

Sick, that's all I felt.

"Amoret," his voice cracked as he moved forward, grabbing my face again as I pleaded for him to leave me alone. "I can explain, I can."

"Don't-Don't touch me-" I clawed at his hands, "-you-you monster."

"Amoret, listen to me," he begged.

I choked on my words, ugly cries escaping me as my chest heaved up and down as I cried, "I di-didn't even k-know-know him, I-I didn't know."

All of a sudden, his lips were on mine.
