Chapter 19 - Character switch

When Daemon reached the scene, the place was overcrowded with police officers, news channel reporters and many people who seemed to have forgotten the idea of sleep.

The amount of people would have intimidated a common person but Daemon was so used to this and he just scowled at the people.

Wasn't there anyone to keep these people out?

As soon as he thought that a police officer came up to him and said, "Mister, we have announced three times that people are not allowed here. How many more times do we have to say that, you rufus?"

Rufus?

Daemon glared at the man and his anger only peaked when the officer put his hand on his collar and tried to drag him out.

Tried, being the key word.

He immediately snatched the man's hand from his collar and then looked at the man like he was a cockroach that he didn't want to step on.

"You useless fool... I am Detective Daemon Spencer and if you don't immediately lead me to Ferraro, I will make sure you lose your job before you can say unfair", Daemon snarled at the man whose expression had changed immediately from anger to fright.

Daemon, being so used to most of the people he interacted with having this expression, he didn't even give it a second look as the man led him through the crowd.

Through the crowd, he immediately spotted Ferraro's pompous head as he looked like he was posing for a photograph for the news report.

When Ferraro noticed Daemon, his eyes widened but he quickly hid the fear from his eyes. The man was capable of many things.

"Spencer..." Ferraro greeted him awkwardly unlike how he had talked to him on the phone.

Daemon just tilted his head partially to his right.

"I will lead you to the body immediately...thank you Mr. Stevenson for leadi..."

"Lead me to the witness...NOW" Daemon said before glaring at the officer who had led him to Ferraro. The officer scampered away like a rat.

"But...Daemon..."

"I. SAID. NOW!"

"Ok, fine...what crawled up your arse," Alex muttered quietly as he led the scowling man to the witness.

Daemon violently pushed the people who were in his way away. He caught sight of the woman he had come in search of. His breath stopped and he stared at her.

Her dark hair was blown across her face unlike how she usually neatly kept it. Her emerald eyes were firm and glaring at the police man who was asking her question.

But what blew him off more than her posture or expression was the fact that she had thick dark blood splayed across her face.

"Are you going to keep staring at her or what?" Ferraro asked him amused. Daemon looked at him and immediately understood, Ferraro didn't know what she was.

"Yeah, man, I know she is hot, but keep it in," Ferraro winked. Daemon fought the urge the punch him on the jaw and instead, walked swiftly towards the woman who was surrounded by people gaping at her.

"Move out of the way," Daemon snarled as he pushed the police officer away. He kneeled down and looked at Rosalyn carefully.

She didn't seem to register who he was as she looked a little dazed. He was scared she would push him away when she realized who he was.

For the first time, he felt actual guilt.

It was because of him, she was in the position. Because of him she was badly hurt.

"Sweetheart..." he said softly and her eyes widened with recognition. To his surprise, she flung her arms around his shoulder and buried her face in his chest.

He held her closely to his chest as she sobbed.

"Oh god... oh my god... demon...oh my god..." she sobbed.

"Its ok love, I'm here...I will never leave you again...I'm here..." he cooed softly into her ear.

For the first time, he felt complete comfort and relief. She was safe in his arms, a little hurt, but safe nonetheless.

She lifted her head from his chest and looked into his eyes, her face damp with tears and blood.

"Its ok...you are fine..." he said softly as he wiped the blood on her face with his hand.

Her expression changed into one of confusion. She was probably wondering if he hit his head somewhere.

"I'm scared..." she whispered.

"I won't let anything happen to you ever. I promise," he said looking into her eyes, "and I always keep my promises."

"What the hell is happening here?" the police officer who Daemon had pushed over asked angrily. It looked like he had at last got up after he was toppled over.

Alex had at last rushed over and come. He was currently, gaping at Rosalyn who playing with the buttons on Daemon's shirt.

"What the hell is happening is none of your business," Daemon snapped back, "you illiterate, stupid, idiotic, buffoons of policemen think it's wise to question a girl who has just survived a traumatic experience? You come anywhere near her with your questions, you will lose your..."

"Woah...woah..." Alex said. It seemed like he had at last come back to his senses.

"Mathew, it's fine. He is the detective in charge. You can leave now..." Alex said to the red faced man.

"I can't believe I sabotaged my sleep for the likes of these people..." Mathew muttered as he walked away. Daemon looked like he would have liked to say a thing or two to the police officer but he stopped himself when Rosalyn sniffed.

He looked down at her and smiled.

"Wait, is this some new kind of detective-witness bonding thing because I'm not sure I'm very comfortable with it..." Alex said unsurely looking at Rosalyn who had started to glare at him.

Daemon got up and carried Rosalyn in his arms bridal style. After making sure she was comfortable, he turned his attention back to the slightly disgusted and amused officer.

"Is that your girlfriend?" Alex asked teasingly, "Is that why you rushed over so angrily?"

"Let me, make myself clear, Ferraro," Daemon said with no tinge of the previous softness in his voice, "You will never put a traumatized witness in the situation that you put my Rosalyn in, got it?"

Alex was about to comment on the 'my Rosalyn' part but Daemon didn't let him interrupt him.

"Next, if I see any of you police officers treat me or her in the way they did right now, I will make sure I retaliate. And you don't want to make an enemy of me Ferraro," he continued, "and last, she isn't my girl friend...he is my wife."

....................................................................................................................................................

Daemon drove quietly. Once in a while, he would turn at Rosalyn who sitting quietly in the shot gun seat.

She had stopped crying and now was staring ahead, refusing to say a word.

"Rosalyn, please speak to me. Are you ok?" Daemon asked softly as he looked at her for a second, before turning his attention back on the road.

She snorted and then turned away.

"I know you are angry with me, love, but please," Daemon said.

"Love....LOVE?" she asked angrily at last speaking.

"Thank god you're ok," Daemon said to himself.

"Don't you dare pretend even for a second that you care or give a damn about me..." Rosalyn said angrily and turned away, refusing to look at him.

"I'm sorry for what happened earlier. I was a dick," Daemon offered, not knowing what to say. He had never been in a similar situation ever before. He usually always got his way by being arrogant and rude, but the little bit of common sense that was left in him told him that acting that way wouldn't please his enraged wife.

"Yes, you were a major dick," Rosalyn said angrily. Daemon nodded agreeing.

"What happened earlier, over there..." her voice became quiet and Daemon deduced that she was still shaken by the incident, "that was a moment of weakness on my part."

Daemon looked at her not knowing what to say.

"We will never speak of it again. Not that we will speak anyway. And I know that you are just being all nice and good because you want to squeeze the information from me," Rosalyn continued in a very dry voice like she was talking about the weather forecast.

Daemon looked back on the road without saying a word. Truth was, that hadn't even crossed his mind. But that would have been exactly what he had done... but this time, he knew he wouldn't do that.

"I won't ask you about anything until you are absolutely ready. The case can wait, but I need to be sure you're fine," he said.

"Oh, don't suck up. I will anyway tell you what I know because I want her to get justice," she said not looking at him.

He didn't any explanation of who 'her' was.

"I know you're angry with me. I'm angry with myself as well. But just let me make sure you're ok, at least for tonight," he said.

She looked at him silently and then nodded and looked away.

"I don't get why you are suddenly feeling all this and acting bipolar," she muttered under her breath.

"Even I don't get it," he replied.

........................................................................................................................................................

Rose sat quietly on her bed as she watched her husband pour her a cup of water.

His sudden change of behavior was a little disconcerting, not to mention weird.

He had insisted on helping her take her bath. He took off her clothes and his eyes never strayed from her eyes. He helped her wash the blood off her face and hair. He helped her dress and offered to cook something for her as well.

She had obviously denied, not knowing how to react to his sudden change of behavior. But in a way, she was used to his mood swings. But not one of his mood swings was positive towards her.

When he married her, he was stoic, then he became impatient, then angry and mad, then bored, then angry again and then today morning he was highly amused. Then of course he became angry and then no emotion and now he was overly caring and sympathetic. Not to mention he had been worried also in between.

It was like the man had no middle ground. Talk about mood swings giving her a whip lash.

But the part what she couldn't understand was that she felt that his behavior was genuine. He wasn't acting...it was the same feeling he gave off when he was worried about her.

He smiled at her and offered her the glass of water.

She blinked up at him. Not a smirk, but a genuine smile.

"Ok, you are freaking me out now," Rose said softly and he shrugged.

"You have serious issues, you do know that, right? And I am not joking," Rose said.

"I know. I have to clear my head," he said as he again took out his phone.

What was with him and his obsession with his phone? If it was that Sabrina bitch... she really didn't mind visiting the police station again and this time for murder.

"Who is that?" she asked trying to act disinterested.

"Oh, it's my partner- Aiden. Not really my partner, but you know, assists me in all my cases" he said, as he sat beside her on the bed.

Rose looked at him like he grew three heads.

"You just told me something about your case, without me prying, and you growling," Rose said raising her eyebrows.

"I know I fucked up," Daemon said, "I have problems with dealing with my emotions. I tend to shut off everything I feel and block it all. Now it is like an unconscious reflex."

"It's like you have a wall around your heart," Rose said.

"Yeah, you could say that," Daemon said, "though I think right now I'm very shaken by what happened. I'm trying the whole embrace your emotion thing. It will take time."

"Yeah but better now than ever," Rose said and then turned away, playing with her fingers. It was hard thinking of ignoring him when he sat and talking so freely.

She could never get how he managed to hold up his 'I hate everyone' facade.

"How are you...I mean, how do you feel about what happened?" Daemon said carefully.

"Honestly?" Rose asked, "I'm trying to ignore it. I still haven't come out of it, and I'm trying to distract myself from thinking about what happened. I'm not really ready to face it all."

"Of course I understand," Daemon said.

Rose never thought that he would ever understand anyone, forget her.

"You feel guilty, don't you?" Rose asked.

"How can I not," he muttered looking back at his phone, "I acted immaturely and you paid for it."

"Umm...not to be, you know, nosy and all," Rose started.

"You can ask me anything."

"Well, wow... I never knew a person could change this much..." Rose said awkwardly and then cleared her throat, "well...um..."

"Yes?"

"Did you, you know, sleep with her?" she finished and then looked at her lap.

He was silent for a second and then said, "I am a dick but I would never do that to you."

She relaxed and sighed in relied. That weight was lifted off her chest.

"And I didn't kiss her either. We were pretending so that you would see..." Daemon said awkwardly scratching his head.

"Why?" Rose asked confused feeling her chest again light.

"Because you upset me...you told me you care...I didn't know how to react..."

"So you decided to piss me off?" she asked.

He nodded sheepishly.

""You're an idiot. You know I won't forgive you anytime soon, right?" Rose asked.

"Yeah... I know..." he said, "so... what about you and those two boys earlier."

Rose was confused for a minute and then her eyes widened with realization.

"Who, Alec and Jace?" Rose asked, "They are my friends. That is all. Besides they know I'm married to you and Jace is too much of a gentleman and Alec is a player who wants to date everyone. Besides, I think he is a little scared of you."

"Good," he approved as she nodded. They both remained silent and then Rose said, "Well, this is awkward. What about Aiden now?"

Daemon's eye brows again furrowed and Rose recognized that expression immediately. For a weird reason, she felt comfortable at once. Even though he was nice to be with when he was good and sweet, but she preferred the rude and arrogant git who she had married. Maybe she was going insane.

"I'm not sure. I will try in the morning. I'm just worried, you know," Daemon admitted.

"You get worried a lot," Rose noted, "but you don't like showing it as it will ruin your bad boy image."

Daemon just shook his head and switched off the lamp. Rose gulped.

"Are you okay?" Daemon asked softly through the darkness.

"Yeah, just a little scared..."

"Come here."

To her surprise, he pulled her towards him and spooned her. She smiled to herself. But before she could sleep, the image of the murderer ....which she had been trying to avoid... came up again.

She gulped again.

She couldn't believe this was happening to her again.

AN:

Well I haven't uploaded in a long time so I thought, why not?

And I guess now Daemon might be back on some people's good books.

Another thing,

I decided to change the cast for the story because I'm not really very comfortable with it. So if you all can imagine your own characters as each of the people, it would be fine.

Because when I think Rose, that actress isn't who comes to my mind. Honestly, it is Ashley Greene. and I don't want Daemon to be as smoking hot as Ian Somerhalder either.

So that's it.

Next I'll upload on sunday.

Adios,

Ashley
