For the next few weeks I was consistently uncomfortable. Living your life with a supernatural watchguard who could hear every movement you made when you couldn't even see them, just made my skin crawl.

Bella switched between being with Edward and Jacob when she wasn't at school. I, on the other hand, spent my time working, or with Charlie at the diner of the station.

A knock at my door startled me from my thoughts. I turned, catching Bella's eye.

"Hey, Edward wants us to go over to their house, to talk about what's going on." She said.

I nodded and motioned for her to start going.

As I put on my coat, my father's makeshift office, otherwise known as our kitchen table, was covered in files.

Frowning, I walked over, leafing through them, countless missing posters, although one stood out to me the most. Riley Biers. He wasn't much younger than me and he was from Forks, so there was always the chance that we'd crossed paths at school. But I couldn't shake the feeling that it was something else.

"Evelyn?" I turned, seeing Bella who looked at me confused. "What's up?"

I shook my head. "It's just this thing in Seattle, it's terrifying, but it doesn't feel right." I explained. "Spidey senses are tingling." I joked.

She smiled slightly. "I think that's what they wanna talk about."

I nodded and walked with her out to the rust bucket she called a car.

Surprisingly, the old truck drove quite smoothly. Sitting back in my seat, I was content to watch the forest go by.

"Evie," Bella said, hesitantly. I looked over at her. "Before I left for Italy, I was awful to you."

I nodded, though she couldn't see. "Yeah, you were." I took a deep breath, feeling the awkward tension between us.

"You know I didn't mean any of it, right? I've been feeling so guilty, but I know you'd never accept my apology, but I'm scared now and I don't know what's coming or what's going to happen, but I don't want to miss the opportunity to apologise."

I was surprised to say the least.

"I know you don't understand the Edward thing, and I know all of this scares you, but it's my life now. And I know you don't want to, but I hope you get to meet Caius, just so maybe you can understand why I've been so crazy lately." She explained.

"Bella, you do realise that this problem started a long time ago, before you ever came back to Forks?" I asked.

She bit her lip and nodded. "I'm sorry. I hated that you didn't come with us, I hated that I didn't have my big sister. It felt like you chose dad over me."

My eyes got wide and I took a minute to process.

"What the hell, Bella," I moaned, smacking my forehead with my hand. "You got upset because I didn't want to move to Phoenix and that's why I thought you hated me all these years."

Bella's pale face grew very red and she shifted in her seat. "Uh, maybe?"

"I stayed with dad because he needed someone. Renee and I never had that kind of relationship that the two of you do. I was too much like dad. When you left, I thought it was for the best, you'd always hated Forks. I didn't stay because I didn't wanna be your big sister. I stayed because we all need someone and I couldn't let him down." I explained, feeling my heart ache a little.

It was quiet for a few moments.

"You know I hated it when you stopped visiting and then we had that phone call and you broke my heart, Bella, saying all that stuff."

Bella sighed. "I just wanted my big sister back, but I shouldn't have said any of that. I don't just mean back then either."

I nodded. "I guess we've both been pretty big bitches."

Bella laughed a little. "Yeah. For what it's worth, I really do want you to be my sister again."

"I think I could manage that." I replied.

We remained in silence until we pulled into the Cullen's driveway.

Edward was there in an instant as he helped Bella out of the car. I rolled my eyes and walked ahead.

"Into the family room." Edward told me as I reached the front door. I entered, and followed the hallway until I reached a room containing only the males of the family. They were avidly watching the TV which was showing a new report on the mess in Seattle.

"Seattle is in a state of terror," the news woman said. "Police are baffled by the escalating murders and disappearances. Theories range from a vicious new gang to a wildly active serial killer."

"It's getting worse." Carlisle said, turning off the tv. "We might have to do something."

"So you're aware that whatever's going on isn't caused by humans." I said, causing everyone to look at me. "I'm right, I know I am. No human could do all that and we've done some pretty shitty things."

"And you've been reading your father's police reports." Edward said.

I shrugged. "Too scared to be at home on my own, I've been spending a lot of time at the station." I explained.

Jasper considered my words and nodded. "It takes more than one of our kind to cause the damage they're reporting. Quite a few more. And they're undisciplined, conspicuous."

"It's newborns." Edward said, catching onto Jasper's thoughts.

"What, like, new vampires?" Bella asked.

Edward looked down at her. "In the first few months after the change-"

Jasper jumped in, explaining. "That's when we're at our most uncontrollable, vicious, insane with thirst."

"That was intense." I muttered, knowing everyone could hear me anyway.

"Something to look forward to." Emmett said, grinning at Bella and then at me. I glared, not interested in hearing that kind of stuff.

"No one's trained these newborns, but this isn't random." Jasper spoke to Carlisle.

Carlisle's face became worried, which in turn, made me worried. "Someone's creating an army."

Emmett jumped up, looking excited. "Well now we're definitely going to Seattle."

"An army of Vampires?" Bella asked, searching the faces in the room.

"And they've been created to fight someone." Jasper replied, staring intensely at her.

"Oh boy," I muttered, knowing exactly where this was going.

Edward clearly shared my thoughts. "We're the only clan even close to Seattle."

"Regardless of why they were made, if we don't put a stop to them, the Volturi will. I'm surprised they've let it go on this long." Carlisle spoke.

Considering I was supposed to be 'mated' to one of their kings, I wasn't getting a very good impression of the Volturi.

"Or maybe they're behind it." Edward said. "In Italy, I read Aro's mind. He wants me and Alice to join him. He knows we'll never choose him as long as our family's still alive."

Jasper was growing angry, I could see as the threat to his family and to Alice became more prominent. "An army could solve that for him."

We sat in silence for some time, each thinking.

"I should head home," I said standing. "Charlie's gonna be home soon and I don't want him there on his own. I'll see you later, Bella." I waved as I walked towards the front door.

"Evelyn." I turned, seeing Carlisle walk towards me. "Would you mind if I took you home?" He asked politely. I nodded, remembering the need for a protection detail.

We walked out to his car and got in.

As he began to drive, I realised that this was my first time alone with the doctor, and my mind began to fill with questions.

"Carlisle, can humans reject the mate thing?" I asked.

He was incredibly still for a moment. "Yes, they can, especially since they very rarely feel it whilst still human."

I nodded, taking in that information. "I've been to Volterra before." I spoke, not sure why I said it, but wanting to tell someone.

I could tell I caught him by surprise with that.

"I was travelling Europe, ended up in Italy and then ended up in Volterra. I stayed there, longer than I'd stayed anywhere when I travelled."

"Why do you think you stayed?" He asked.

I sighed, not wanting to reveal what I had to say, but I needed to know what it meant for my future.

"Because it felt like home."

He nodded, as though he was expecting that answer.

"I guess I'm screwed then, huh." I joked.

"Giving in, is not the same as giving up." He said simply, smiling at me kindly.

I turned my head to watch the trees go by as I mulled his words over.
