I eyed the clock with a little amusement as the front door closed.

I was sitting in the living room with my dad, both of us reading our respective material when Bella walked in, dropping her bag on the floor and throwing herself into the seat next to Charlie.

He looked at her then round at the clock. "4 o'clock on the dot," he sighed, going back to his paper. "That kid tryna brownnose me now or something?"

I smirked from my spot on the sofa. It had been 2 months since Bella had returned from Italy and Charlie had grounded her. It took us a week to realise that separating her from Edward wasn't going to work.

So instead, Charlie allowed her to see him outside of school on the condition that her curfew was 4pm. Both of them had respected that and the household was mostly quiet in the time that followed.

It had been 2 months since Bella had followed me from the Cullen's house that night, explained exactly what Alice had seen in her vision.

If the future was to be believed, then I was supposed to be some kind of lady of the Vampires, mated to one of the kings.

I shook my head, refusing to entertain such a ridiculous idea. I wasn't going to lose my humanity and I sure as hell wasn't going to go simpering to some man's side like Bella did.

I'd refused to tell Bella about the dreams I had periodically throughout the past 2 years, about the red eyes that haunted me and the soft italian accent and the words that followed it. It made sense now, but I wouldn't let it control me.

Working hard since I'd returned to Forks had left me with a significant amount of money, even more so since my dad refused any money I offered him in exchange for staying. I came home to help Bella and my dad, but now neither really needed me any longer and I was free to go back to traveling.

At least, that's what I was planning to tell Charlie. He didn't need to know that I was running from a vision, seen by Bella's best friend who was also a vampire.

"You know why you're being punished, right?" Charlie's voice cut through my thoughts, causing me to turn my attention on them.

Bella nodding, glancing over at me.

"I know, I put you through Hell." She said.

Charlie sighed, nodding. "And you hurt your sister, I'm not just talking physically either." He reminded her sternly.

Bella nodded, playing with her fingers, avoiding my eyes.

"But, I have other reasons for grounding you. Like, uh, I just want you to get some separation from him." He told her, waving his hand towards the door.

"Dad, there's nothing you can say," she retorted, sitting up. "Edward is in my life."

I closed my book, not interested in hearing any more of what she had to say. Instead, I got up and wandered into the kitchen.

Coffee was a good distraction.

It was almost 2 weeks later that I finally decided to speak with Bella. Not to reconcile, I figured it was far too late for that. But because I'd come home to see a suitcase by the front door.

Her door was open though I still knocked as I leaned against the doorframe.

She turned to look at me, her expression unreadable.

"Going somewhere?" I asked, eyeing the smaller bag she was packing.

She nodded. "Yeah, uh Edward's taking me to see mom for a few days."

Multiple thoughts ran through my head. "So, you're gonna go say goodbye." I stated, knowing that there was nothing else this could be.

Her expression crumbled slightly, sadness melting into her eyes.

"Don't vampires burn in the sun?" I asked, hoping to change the subject.

Bella smiled wryly and shook her head. "They uh, they sparkle."

I snorted, unable to keep it in. "Wow, that's... yeah that's not intimidating at all."

We shared a small smile and I nodded at her before walking away.

"Try not to get yourself into trouble" I said, halfway to my room, turning to look at her. "It's just last time you went off with Edward, you ended up signing your death sentence and potentially mine as well."

She grimaced and turned away from me.

Sighing, I walked into my room, closing the door on the conversation, but the guilt I felt still remained.

"I've missed this." I said, as Charlie and I sat side by side, watching the football game. We'd done it most days when I was growing up and since leaving town, it's one thing I had always missed.

"Me too, kid. I've definitely missed the food." my dad replied, tucking into the basket of home-made chicken wings. I laughed, feeling content for the first time since I came home.

No Bella, no vampires, no live threatening excursions.

But, all good things must come to an end.

The minute the phone rang, Charlie Swan turned into Police Chief Swan. I sighed and turned the volume on the tv down, reaching for the food to take it into the kitchen.

"Sorry kid, we've got a problem down at the station." He said, pulling on his uniform and grabbing his holster from the drawer.

Smiling, I nodded at him. "It's okay dad, honestly."

"You gonna be alright till I get home?" he asked.

"Go! I'll be fine." I promised. He walked over, kissing my forehead before awkwardly nodding and turning to leave.

"Be safe!" I called, far more afraid now that I know what lay in the dark.

He wasn't gone for long before there came a knock at the door. I froze, knowing that it couldn't possibly be my father as he had keys.

"Evelyn, I know you're home, can you please come to the door."

My terror decreased slightly, as the voice was familiar enough to me, but it didn't take away the fear of knowing that there was a vampire at my door.

Walking slowly towards the front door, I pulled it open, body tensing in anticipation.

On the porch stood the blonde model-esque type figure of Rosalie.

"What do you want?" I asked, glancing behind her for any other company, but she was alone.

"Alice asked me to come. A vampire called Victoria is in town, she's after your sister." She explained.

Suddenly, Bella's trip to see Renee made sense.

"Your father is at work and should be safe and Bella's out of town. My family and I were wondering if there was somewhere safe you could go. We know exactly where she'll be but we don't want to take any risks."

"I could head to the diner," I guessed. She nodded and then waited for me while I grabbed my jacket, phone, keys and wallet.

I locked the door and then turned to say something, but the blonde was gone. I rolled my eyes and made my way to my car, wondering just when in the hell my life had become this way.
