Change in scenery

They'd just been on a nice undercover visit to another kingdom when they had somehow broken a law by giving a little girl a flower.

"Well this is a nice change of scenery."

"This is a prison cell!" Arthur Basically screamed, annoyed at his manservant.

"I was being sarcastic!" Merlin muttered back.

They waited for what felt like ages, but Merlin started getting bored. "Wanna play a game?"

"Sure why not?" Arthur answered thinking it would be harmless. That was a mistake on his part.

So Merlin explained the rules. They were going to play a game Merlin made up. The first person would ask a question, and the second person could answer and get a point, or not answer, and not get a point. Then it would switch. If someone lied, then they automatically lost.

"I'll go first," Arthur commanded "who was the last girl you fancied." He asked without knowing he'd reminded Merlin of pain that he'd caused.

"A beautiful girl named Freya." Pain was evident in his voice. Arthur decided not to push further about her when it was his turn. Then Merlin quickly changed the subject, "okay, my turn, when did you first get kissed by a girl?"

"Is this going to be girl themed?" Arthur asked with a bored tone.

"Depends what we ask" was the reply, "but if you would rather not answer, that's fine."

"Seventeen summers." Arthur mumbled just loud enough for Merlin to hear. Merlin chortled at this. Then Arthur got more confident,"When was the last time a girl beat you in a fight?"

"When will you let that go? That was just one time! .... Well maybe two..." He mumbled quietly. "Last summer was the last time." Merlin then thought for a bit on his question, "what do you think about magic now?"

"I honestly don't know anymore. Sometimes it seems good, but then another evil sorcerer comes along, and makes it look evil again..... Right, my turn, whats one of your biggest fears?"

Merlin thought over the question. One of your biggest fears... "Probably being burnt on the pyre and the people closest to me being there to watch."

This was not what Arthur had expected.

"Now what is the worst memory you have?"

Arthur shivered at this. "Hard one, but I'm going to say Morgana betraying me, and my father dieing, it's kind of a tie." He thought he had a lot of bad memories. "What about you Merlin what is the worst memory you have?"

"Theres too many to pick from."

"Well if you want the point, then pick the least amount possible, and explain them."

So Merlin started. " Well there's when I was bullied back in Ealdor, then there's losing the love of my life who I mentioned earlier, you unknowingly killed her, and then when my father died, and you told me 'men are not worth your tears' or something like that." His voice cracked when he spoke of Freya, and there was a tear rolling down his cheek.

"I'm sorry Merlin," he muttered, "how did, how did I.... Kill her?"

"She was cursed. A mother had cursed her to become a bastet for killing her son in self-defense, so now she would kill forever. I found her and saved her, and we, and we were going to run away together. When it was too late, I found out what she was, and the fact that I could tame her. You had given her a mortal blow Arthur. She Died in my arms."

This made silence for a while.

"What would you do if one of your best friends was keeping a secret from you for years, and you found out?" Merlin had broken the silence with a serious question. This was very unlike Merlin, with all the seriousness. The glimmer in his eye from joking aroung was now left with a look Arthur had seen only in broken men.

"It depends on what they were hiding, and if they were helping me, or making my life harder." Arthur's response seemed to put hope in Merlin's eyes. "Is there something you've been hiding from me? You know besides all the pain that you've endured?"

"Yes... but this is one of the main reasons I've been forced to endure all the pain, and not share it." Hearing this Arthur sat up straighter wanting to know what his friend had been hiding. "All this time I've been saving your royal arse, and all you've been doing is insulting me. The thing I've been hiding could get me killed, but yet I've secretly been using it multiple times to save you-"

That was when the guards came and led the two through lengthy hallways. Arthur was still thinking over what Merlin had said. He was quite confused.

Soon they had arrived to their destination. A pyre. There were some of the Camelot knights standing around looking shocked that their Prince was about to be burnt on a pyre.

Merlin didn't like this scene at all. The questions that he had asked earlier gave him enough confidence to go through with his plan. Muttering a spell caused both Arthur to look shocked, and the pyre to break. Then with another spell the shackles that kept them from fighting and running easily came off. Soon Arthur, Merlin, and the knights were out of that horrid kingdom, and on their way back to Camelot.

"Was that what you were going to tell me in the cell?" A breath taken Arthur demanded.

A nod came from Merlin.

"Wait, people randomly falling off their saddles, people dropping their swords and tree branches 'randomly falling... Was that all you?"

Another nodd.

"Wow, looks like we'll have to talk about this while you're polishing my armour and my room."

"Wait what?"

"This doesn't change the fact that you're my manservant."

"So you're not going to burn me on a pyre?"

"You have got to be the most incompetent manservant I've ever had! Of course we won't! We definitely don't want Goerge back! You're lucky that we like you!"

"Well I'm going to take that as a compliment, but you know I won our game!" Merlin's goofy grin was back.

"Shut up Merlin!"
