Arthur's acceptance

Arthur had begun to show a new attitude towards magic. It had truly surprised Merlin when Arthur had caught a person doing magic, and scolded her on not being more careful. "Until I can convince the council, you must keep quiet," he had told the girl. The surprised look on her face was nothing compared to the look on Merlin's face.

True to his word, Arthur began his attempt to convince the council that magic wasn't as bad as it was said to be. Telling tales of being saved by sorcerers, and magical beasts bringing forth good luck. Arthur told of the blue orb that helped him get through a cave, and many mysterious happenings. Later when Arthur was in his chambers with Merlin, he confessed he suspected one of the knights had magic. Trees always seemed to fall at the strangest of times, and random natural events would always be in their favour. Arthur may have been partially correct in his assumption, but Merlin didn't correct him.

Despite Arthur's new acceptance of magic, Merlin remained silent about his own. Knowing his bad luck, why would he? So he continued to fight in the shadows; also when no one was looking, mostly just when it was necessary.

When Merlin agreed that he thought magic should be allowed into the kingdom, Arthur started sharing everything with him. His plans, his ideas, and his progress were all things Merlin knew of. It truly helped when he needed to assist, or avoid Arthur.

A kingdom nearby had offered an alliance if Camelot accepted magic. Another had threatened war. That's how they ended up with an army at their gates.

As usual Merlin was at Arthur's side as the Army approached. Arthur was shouting orders, and helping people prepare. The knights were almost ready when the army was in firing range. They catapults began launching, and you could hear a loud wail from a child. "You do know you don't have to fight right?" Arthur had told Merlin. Knowing Merlin, he quit his attempt after a shrug, and allowed him to follow.

The ones who were ready raced out to meet the rival army. When Merlin passed through the gates, he felt dread. "There's too many of them." Arthur whispered quietly. "May luck be on our side tonight."

Brutally the rival army fought. They could only hope that everyone was well prepared. Especially Mordred. He was the youngest knight, and he was most likely the reason Arthur's ideas on magic had changed.

It was a cry from a nearby knight that distracted Arthur long enough for someone to find an unprotected side of Arthur. Arthur looked in Merlin's direction, and he failed to notice the coming strike. Merlin had no chance to think it over. Out of reflex, he used his magic, and the man was thrown through his own people. Many were knocked down.

Arthur's eyes widened as he looked over, then back at Merlin. Men raced forward to replace the ones that had fallen, and soon Arthur's attention was brought back to the battle.

Somehow the two were separated, so instead Merlin focused on fighting with Gwaine. Seeing as magic was no longer a death sentence in Camelot, Merlin began to use it more, and more as they fought.

Then he heard Mordred. It was a cry for Merlin's help. No one else seemed to hear it. Mordred elaborated that Arthur was in trouble. That was when all hell broke loose. On the enemy side, a tornado developed. Somehow fire got mixed in, and it pulled in, and burned their enemies. Many stopped fighting, and ran in fright.

Looking back on it, Merlin realized Mordred had fooled him. Arthur had asked Mordred if he'd know about Merlin's magic. He'd told Arthur that he did, and that Merlin could finish this battle in mere minutes. Apparently Arthur had told Mordred to prove it. Then well... Mordred knew what Merlin cared about.

Arthur sat Merlin down. "Merlin, why didn't you tell me you had magic?" Merlin shrugged. "Merlin you absolute clotpole, I've been incredibly accepting about magic for the past year, and i started telling you everything about magic, and you didn't mention that you're an incredibly powerful sorcerer?"

"Warlock," Merlin corrected.

Arthur furrowed his eyebrows. "What in heavens name is a warlock?" Arthur asked out of breath from his rant.

"Someone who's had magic since they were born."

"That's possible?"

That was the beginning of a very, very long conversation.
