It was another one of Arthur's quests, given by his father for him to go on alone. Yet here he was nearly there with an idiot on a horse next to him. Arthur had specifically told Merlin  not to come this time. It seemed that threats about the stocks hadn't stopped Merlin from coming.

Arthur had stopped in front of the magical gate that they need to get through.

"Since you're SO smart Merlin, how do we get in?" Arthur chided.

"Gaius said we needed to state our greatest fear or fears and the gate would somehow respond."

"C'mon Merlin how do we really get through, I've had enough of your idiotic jokes!" Stated Arthur. But Merlin just gave him a look that said 'I'm not kidding!'.

"Fine then, so my greatest fear is....,"

He thought of it for a while.

"Being alone."
In his mind he was seeing morgana's betrayal, losing his father, losing knights, he saw the battles for Camelot that he lost, yet the worst one was seeing Merlin betraying him in his dream.

Past dream

Morgana had forced him to kneel in front of her while she sat on the throne. He had failed everyone. He was a failure. Yet somehow he still had some hope. He looked around the room and found Merlin.
"Merlin?"

"You're on your own you prat!" Came the cold reply
That was when he had woken up from his nightmare.

The gate had opened slightly, then it had closed.

"If you wish to pass the other boy must also state his fear," the gate had rumbled.

The prat had turned to face a paler then usual Merlin.

"Go on, tell the gate."

"Its not that simple, it would take a while to explain." He had muttered.

The Prince seemed annoyed at this. "C'mon Merlin, just say your fear, if you can't explain it all, then summarize it." Arthur waited for Merlin to speak up for a bit, until he lost his patience. "We only have so much time for the people of Camelot so get on with it."

Fear. That was the only thing Merlin was showing right now.

"Uh.... Not being accepted and death?" Merlin more asked then told. He imagined himself on the pyre burning because Arthur hadn't accepted him when he found out.

"Be more precise." The gate had spoken up again.

"What are you so afraid of?" Arthur had asked with genuine curiousity.

"You."

Then the gate opened.
