They stood face to face at eyelevel. Two men who were every bit of 6’3 and lethal. Neither one said a word.

“You hurt my woman,” Jericho said, breaking the silence.

Trent smirked. “What is this?” he countered referring to Carla, whom Jericho held by the hair. Trent did not gaze in her direction, not once even as she called his name through her tears. He remained distant and cold.

“An eye for an eye, brother.”

“Just like that, huh?”

“No, it’s not like that, Trent.” He pushed Carla to the side. “Untie Mona and you two get the fuck out of here,” Jericho commanded Carla.

“Jericho,” I called. Our eyes met, but he remained hard and cold as his eyes made sure I was okay. Then his attention shot back to Trent. He starts removing his weapons. Trent gives a sickening laugh.

“Like old times, huh? When we use to go at it in the backyard.”

“Yeah, only this time I'm gonna kill you with my bear hands.”

Carla ran to me, picking up the knife Jericho threw aside.

“Are you hurt,” she asked me.

“Just my leg. I think my knee might be sprang from a fall.” She flinched at the news of my injuries as she began cutting at the rope. Her eyes misted with tears. All the while, Jericho and Trent charged at each other.

“It was all your fault!” Trent shouted, taking the first punch.

“Be a man, Trent, and take some responsibility for your own actions,” Jericho shouted back blocking Trent’s punch then countered it with punches to the face and abdomen. Trent stumbled back, but quickly recovered. He performed a graceful round house kick, but Jericho moved out of the way. His fist connected to Trent's jaw once again. He shook it off and aimed for Jericho's rib, successfully. Jericho grunted in pain as Trent moved behind him. He took Jericho in a headlock. Jericho used both elbows to free himself and spun, kicking Trent in the thigh and dropped him. Trent raised himself on to his knees and performed a low roundhouse kick. Jericho fell backwards andTrent took the opportunity. He got on top and began beating Jericho. I turned away.

Meanwhile, I was finally free as Carla helped me to my feet. My right leg was extremely stiff.  As I took a step pain shot up my leg. I whimpered. Carla held on to me tighter as she walked and I limped out. I didn’t look back. The damage was done.

As we left the bomb shelter I realized we were in the high desert miles away from Dove City. Carla led me to her parked SUV. She broke down as soon as we aproached the car. “I’m so sorry, Mona,” she sobbed. I took her into my embrace.

“It’s not your fault, Carla. Jericho and Trenton are the ones to blame.” Although it was a low blow bringing Carla here, it was a tactic to throw Trenton off course. “Clearly, we got caught dangerously in between something that had nothing to do with either one of us,” I said, bitterly, through my tears.

“What are you going to do?” she asked.

“What's best for me and my unborn children,” I told her and she agreed.
