Chapter 14- Puzzles To Solve

It was seven a.m. and she already awoke. The side Kiaan had laid her was facing directly the window with a sunny sunrise making her groan.

She somehow manages to get her lazy body off the bed. Scanning the other side of the bed she sees her friend sleep peacefully without the blanket covering her body. Jaanvi mentally slaps Aditi for being so careless.

"And then she complains about mosquito bites." Picking the blanket from the bottom of the bed—from Aditi's side—she covers her friend's body with a small smile. "But then if she doesn't forget to take care of herself I wouldn't be able to." Jaanvi believes if she had a sister she'd be just like Aditi.

Walking out of the room she stalls down the hallway. It kind of creeps her out. Long hallways remind her of horror movies like nineteen-twenty. The vibe was creepy itself.

She never admitted to anyone but she's scared of big houses. Taking a look over her shoulder to make sure no ghosts are behind her she shudders in terror. Her heart believes she's safe with no spirits following her she—still—runs for her life. Sprinting down the stairs she reaches the living room.

"I know Kaan left me here on purpose so I'll get scared and die of a heart attack. How cruel can someone be?" They both did lack in judgment towards each other. Without double-crossing, they'll come to a conclusion.

"But, I'm brave." She dryly chuckles—her throat hurting—but stops as soon as her voice bounces back. "I hate big houses." She pouts when it echoes back.

Just then a big picture caught her eyes. A picture of Kiaan and a girl. Jaanvi walks closer to get a better look at the picture. She realises this photo was perhaps taken when he was around fifteen. The girl was extremely close to Kiaan. Her hand was tugging in his arm—as if they were entering the red-carpet—and they were smiling brightly at the camera.

"See. I knew it." She jumps glaring at the photo, "Kaan was cheating on me since I was thirteen. Can you believe it, Jaanvi? Who cheats on their future wife at fifteen? Shameless bastard. I deserve better." She courageously tells herself with a perfunctory nod.

She rips the photo out of the frame and holds it in her hand. Her eyes were fixed on the fifteen-year-old and around thirteen-year-old girl.

"She doesn't belong there." She whispered folding the picture in half so she could only see Kiaan. A smile forms in her lips seeing his teenage silly prankster smile.

"Who doesn't belong where?" She jolts hearing the familiar voice behind her. Turning around she meets her friend. Quickly and carefully Jaanvi shoves the photo inside her pocket, awkwardly smiling at Aditi.

"Morning" She chipped.

"I asked you something." Aditi folds her arms.

"Ohh," Jaanvi scratches her head, "Umm, we—" She points at Aditi and herself. "We don't belong here. In this weird, big, dark haunted house." She mumbles disgustingly looking around the house.

Aditi laughs at her, "Your house is big too, Jaan." She sits on the couch making Jaanvi's eyes squint at her.

"Let me add, my house has people. Fake but alive." She mutters sitting on the couch across her, "I guess empty houses are better than my house where you're told to be quiet." She whispers lowly looking down, last night flashing in her eyes.

"Jaanvi, not again." Aditi sighs dropping her head down. "Uncle believes in peace. Family. He was just trying to calm things down even though, I agree he did wrong."

Every time she remembers it the vision of her father slapping her come in front of her. She masks her stressed and sad face with a questionable look, "How did I get in bed?"

Aditi knew she wants to change the topic. Jaanvi isn't as smooth as she tends to believe she is.

Maybe it's for the best. Aditi thought. "Mr Groom was dying to hold you in his arms so, he brought you in and laid you on the bed."

"Oh, okay," She simply answers making Aditi shocked. Aditi was expecting a grossed out and complaining Jaanvi to start accusing her of how terrible of a friend she is to let him touch her.

"WAIT! WHAT?" She screams getting up from the couch as if it was hot lava.

"And Jaanvi's slow brain is back." Aditi murmurs to herself with a face-palm. I should have known.

"He touched me? EWWW, I need to take a bath immediately." She looks at her body in pure hatred,

"Ew who knows what he's touched? Or where he touched?" She gags nastily. "I don't want to imagine or I'll end up vomiting." Her mouth churns and stomach flips.

A voice returns behind her. She zips her mouth shut. "Oh I touched a lot of amazing things. For example; my food, my perfume—which is too expensive for you to afford, let me add—my dirty white shoes from last night and my amazing, charming and hot—to die for—body." He dismissively rolls his eyes gazing at his body like it's no big deal.

"EWWWWWW." Jaanvi screams covering her mouth to suppress her vomit. "Ew. I covered my mouth with his touch." She turns around to face him looking handsome as ever, "Did you touch my hand?" She asks.

"No." He replies just to see what she'll do. All this time Dhruv and Aditi were enjoying the live show with a huge grin.

"Oh okay—" She breaths out in relief. "Then I can cover my mouth." She covers her mouth again with her hand in shock from before.

"I kissed your hands with my soft lips." He smirks.

Her eyes widen and her horrified eyes linger on her hands. Her jaw drops. Frowning at him she responds menacingly, "I hate you Kiaan." With that, she storms into the room to take an urgent bath. Ew. Ew. Ew.

"Is she always this crazy?" Kiaan scrutinizes Aditi as he passes her a bag full of food breakfast for the two.

Taking it she giggles. "Always." She peeks inside the bag unclearly, "Why did you bring this?"

Dhruv wants to hit himself with a brick. "To eat? What else do you do with food? Bath?"

Aditi didn't laugh, she finds this particular joke lame, even though he was attempting on cracking a joke.

"No, I meant there's no need. Jaanvi and I are heading to the café soon. We should be there in an hour."

"Have it now," Kiaan says getting his phone out. Once he settles himself on the couch he adds, "We'll drop you to work so don't worry."

She shakes her head negatively, sitting on the couch across him. Dhruv also sits next to Kiaan. "I don't work there. I mean I do but, I just come in on the weekends to help and spend time with Jaanvi and sometimes after work too if I can." She informs, correcting him.

Dhruv was about to ask Aditi a question but was interrupted by his phone. He doesn't know who the number belongs to but picks up. "Hello."

"Hi, Dhruv?" Says a feminine voice from the other side.

"Yeah, it's Dhruv." He answers looking at his brother with a perplexed knitted brows. Not many people had his phone number in India, then who could this be?

"I'm Rashi. Jaanvi's sister." Rashi says clarifying.

He quickly passes the phone to Aditi mouthing, 'Rashi, talk,' because he found no reason to be talking on the phone. If Rashi called it was obviously because she was aware her cousin and Aditi were in Dhruv's house.

It's not that he's afraid of talking to a girl. He passed the phone to Aditi—another reason—because Rashi knew her. He never spoke to Rashi much, therefore, he doesn't know how to start a conversation or how to help her.

Aditi read his lips, she didn't want to talk to Rashi. Not after yesterday but she had no other choice. Placing the phone near her ear she answers in her velvet voice. "Hi, Rashi?"

"Who?" The tone—attitude—has changed drastically. It was aggressive.

"A-Aditi." She replies looking at Dhruv who was watching her every move carefully.

"Why are you answering his phone? And why are you with him? What are you two doing together? That too so early in the morning?" She was booming her with questions as if she was her mother.

"i-I, D-Dhruv brought breakfast for Jaanvi and I. Why did you call?" She passes a fake smile to Dhruv.

"Pass him the phone, I'll tell him only." She orders. Aditi isn't liking her tone but keeps quiet—because she was the reason behind the drama yesterday. It makes her feel guilty and because—the brothers are sitting in front of her. Watching. She composes her anger before replying,

"He's busy."

"Doing what?" Aditi was losing it. Taking a deep breath in she hung up on her. Just because she was trying to be mature and kind does not mean she'll hear someone talk to her in this manner.

Extending the phone back to Dhruv she says emotionlessly, "She just called to check up on Jaanvi and Me." She lies as he takes the phone from her hand. He nods, unconvinced.

They were all sitting in silence until Aditi speaks up, "Where's the bathroom? I think I should have a shower as well before heading out. Could you guide me?" She looks at both the brothers. Before Dhruv can gladly volunteer his phone rings once again.

"You take it, I'll show Aditi." He nods forcefully, answering his phone while Kiaan and Aditi disappear inside the hallway.

"Hello?" He answers.

"Dhruv?" Comes the same voice

"Rashi?" He questions walking to the window.

"Yes," He can picture her smiling. The grin was heavy on her voice. "What was Ad—" Just because he's respectful towards other people does not mean anyone can ask him questions on his personal life.

There's a limit.

"Why did you call? Again?" He adds quickly. He was in no mood to make a long conversation with a girl he hasn't talk to before. He wasn't even a phone person, he was more of a texting.

"Uhh," He can sense the hesitation. "My mum found out that Jaanvi di and her friend—"

"Aditi."

"What?" Rashi's dumbfounded voice asks.

"Her friend's name is Aditi." There is something fascinating about Dhruv disliking when people choose to address someone without their name. He doesn't appreciate or like the term 'he/she' or 'her/his.' Everyone's named for a reason. Shouldn't she know Aditi's name, anyway? She was Jaanvi's only female friend after all.

"Yes, and Aditi. So she just asked me to call you to ask when they will be back."

"You know they are with us?" He raises his brow.

"No, I mean yes." She pauses hesitantly before continuing. "Mum just told be after I cut the phone. So when will they be back?"

"After lunch." He answers. He was about to cut the phone but stops, "Wait, if you spoke to Aditi about this why did you call again?" Now he is getting suspicious.

"I-I because mum just reminded me after I hung up to ask you if you and Kiaan would come over for lunch?"

"Oh," he stops. His reply was more than enough to find out he's aware of Rashi lying. "No, we're fine thank you. How did you get my number?" He is really surprised and a little annoyed because she has his number now.

"I-I tried Kiaan's number but he didn't pick up so, uncle gave me yours." Before he could ask anything else she says, "Ok Bye." And hangs up as if afraid of his questions.

He was in deep thought when he feels a hard hand on his shoulder. Turning around he sees Kiaan. Not wasting any time he says, "Did Rashi call you? Did anyone call you in the last twenty minutes?" He narrows his eyes shoving his phone inside his jeans pocket.

"No," Kiaan answers instantly. "My phones on ringing and it never rang so nope." He takes his phone out to double-check. Showing his call-log to Dhruv. "What's wrong?"

Dhruv peers at his brother's phone screen for good twenty seconds before saying, "I'm not liking this Rashi. Something tells me that, she has wrong intentions." Kiaan never saw his brother being this serious with him.

Without a doubt thought he instantly believes his brother. "What if she's behind last night's incident?" Dhruv further added. He sounds so vindictive to Kiaan and it's petrifying.

"What incident?" Kiaan folds his arms across his chest—ignoring the uneasy feeling crawling up his stomach and resting right above his heart—and begins to listen carefully to his brother.

He seizes his eyes on the sky. "Jaanvi's slap. What if she's behind it?"

This captures Kiaan's full attention. He's confused. Rashi was close to Jaanvi then how can she do something to harm her.
