[CHAPTER 33]

ESCAPE TO HOGSMEADE

[ and how was I to know, I'm not strong ]

WHAT FOLLOWED WAS PURE CHAOS.

All around them, people ran and screamed and curses flashed through the tent, narrowly missing them.

"We have to go," Kate panted, as she fired a curse at a hooded figure, "We need the bags we packed,"

"We need to stay and fight!" Emily exclaimed, and Kate shook her head.

"No, Emily, they're looking for you too," she said urgently, "I promised Harry,"

"You what?" Emily shouted incredulously, but Kate had grabbed her hand and was pulling her through the crowd, out of the tent, away from the screaming and the chaos.

Flashes illuminated the marquee as a sprinting Kate dragged Emily towards the Burrow. The house was deserted and devoid of light as they burst through the front door.

"Stop!" Emily said, planting her feet and wrenching her hand out of her friend's grasp "What are you doing? Why are we running? What about everyone else?"

"Em!" Kate exclaimed, grabbing her by the shoulders, "We need to go, do you understand? If they find you, and they take you, it's over. Harry would do anything for you, and that includes letting Voldemort win if it meant saving your life, and that cannot happen, d'you hear me?"

"Too late," sneered a voice, and there was a call of 'Expelliarmus' and Emily felt her wand fly out of her hand. She turned to face the ugly visage of Fenrir Greyback, his acrid smell filling her nostrils and making her stomach turn. Kate's hand squeezed hers so tight Emily's hand was turning bright red, but she could only register the fear pounding through hr veins as she faced the werewolf, defenceless.

Someone would come. Someone had to.

"Fenrir," she said, in the most calming voice she could muster, "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

He bared his teeth at them in a half-smile. "Well, I'd explain, but your little friend just did. The Dark Lord wishes to see you,"

"He wishes?" Emily asked innocently, and behind her back, her hand reached desperately on the kitchen counter, looking for something she could use as a weapon "Does that mean I have a choice?"

The werewolf let out a half-chortle, half-growl. "Let's just say he will not ask twice,"

Emily made a great show of appearing to ponder this, as her fingers tightened over Mrs. Weasley cast-iron skillet. If Kate had seen the movement out of her peripheral vision, she hadn't let anything on, but Emily felt her fingers loosen around her own.

"Hm," she said, preparing to swing it, "I'm going to have to pass then,"

But before Emily could swing the heavy plate, there was an almighty cry and Greyback stumbled forward as two arms wrapped around his neck and somebody jumped on his back. For a minute that seemed almost comical to Emily, Greyback desperately wrestled with the figure latched onto his back in a flurry of purple feathers and tulle, but the arms around his neck were white with effort as they constricted around his neck until eventually his eyes dropped as his oxygen supply was cut off. The expression in his face slackened, and he collapsed on the floor, taking the other person with him. Violetta stood, blood smeared on her face and purple feathers sticking out of her hair like some crazy warrior chicken and for a moment, the only sound that filled the air was her panting as Kate and Emily stared at her with wide eyes.

"What are you staring at?" she asked, "Shouldn't we be leaving?"

"You couldn't have done that with a spell?" Kate asked incredulously, eyeing the wand in her hand.

"I dunno," Violetta shrugged, "But that felt really, really good,"

"Remind me not to get on your bad side," Emily said, and Violetta smiled lightly.

"Right, okay, now that we have established Vi has lots of rage, we should go," Kate said, and they sprinted through the doorway and up the stairs, taking them two at a time, bursting through the bedroom door.

Emily could hear the commotion from the tent outside that accompanied the bright flashes of light illuminating the night sky. There were shrieks and bangs, and then several shouts and the sound of shattering glass.

"Grab the bags," Kate ordered, and Emily and Violetta crouched down and grabbed the three packs from under the bed as Kate sprinted to the window, peering at the marquee.

"We'll have to apparate to Hogsmeade," Kate said, as heavy footfalls sounded below them.

"We should help the others," Emily protested again.

"No," Violetta said resolutely as she hurried towards them, "Kate's right. We can't be Order members if we're dead,"

More footfalls sounded, and this time they were stomping up the stairs and Emily recognized Bellatrix's screechy voice.

"The girl, find the girl !" it howled, and Violetta grabbed Emily's hand urgently.

"You're the only one who knows where it is Em, and right now we need to go,"

Kate grabbed Emily's other hand as several bangs sounded on the door.

"Now, Em,"

Emily concentrated, clutching her friends' hands, and just as the bedroom door flew open, she felt herself turn on the spot and the floor disappeared beneath her feet.
