"THANK YOU, again, for coming to get me," I told Alec for the fourth time since I got into the car.

"It's really no problem. I was on my way to Midville anyways," Alec replied, glancing over at me.

"For what?"

"Just had to do some personal stuff," he said with a shrug.

"Oh," I mumbled before my phone rang.

I looked at my phone to see Brent calling me for the hundredth time. I pressed the decline button before clicking the off button.

"You must be super pissed if you decline your boyfriend's call for the sixth time," Alec said with an amused smirk.

"He's not my boyfriend," I replied, defensively.

"Chill, child. Anyways, where do you want me to drop you off?"

"I don't know. I can't go home and I can't go to one of my friends' house because they will call one of my brothers to come get me and..." I started rambling.

"Wait, wait, wait. You are mad at your whole family?" Alec asked me with a confused look.

"Kinda. They all kept a huge secret from me."

"Well, I can take you to my house. My mom is going to be there, but she'll probably be on the phone the whole time," Alec offered, running a hand through his shaggy blonde hair.

"That sounds like my only option really. Thank you."

"No problem," Alec replied before his phone rang.

He picked up his phone, and he answered it before placing it up to his ear. He mumbled a couple of things before the phone call ended.

I wanted to ask who it was, but the look on Alec's face told me that he didn't want to talk about it.

For the rest of the ride, it was silent. I stared at the window as a few tears rolled down my cheeks.

I can't help but see his face in my head. I can hear his voice in my head now. Alec didn't seem to notice that I was crying, and I'm glad he didn't.

After forty minutes passed, Alec turned into a neighborhood with small houses. He drove for another minute before turning into a driveway belonging to a small brick house.

"Home sweet home," Alec said, putting the car in park before taking the key out.

"Your house is pretty," I told him as we got out of his vehicle.

He mumbled a thank you, and we walked to the front door. Alec grabbed the door handle before looking over at me.

"Just to let you know, my mother will probably ask you a bunch of questions. You don't have to answer them if you don't want to," Alec warned me before twisting the door and pushing the door open.

He stepped into the house, and I followed him, staring around in awe. We were in a short hallway, and the dining room was to my left.

"Mom, I'm home!" Alec called, walking down the hallway.

"In the living room, honey!" A female voice yelled back. The voice sounded familiar, but I couldn't figure it out.

Alec turned into a open doorway, which I'm guessing leads to the living room, and I followed him quietly.

The living room was small, but cozy. There was a gray l-section couch against the windows, a flat screen tv sitting on a bookshelf, and a huge white and black fireplace.

There was a woman sitting on the couch reading a book. When I saw her face, I knew exactly who she was.

She is the librarian at my school. She was the woman I ran into when I was escaping the awkward scene that happened at lunch.

I should have known it was Alex's mom for two reasons; one they look alike, and her last name is Daniels.

"Mrs. Daniels, it's nice to see you again," I said with a smile as she gasped.

"Campbell, right?" She asked me, standing up from the couch.

I nodded before Alec asked,"You two know each other?"

"Campbell and I accidentally ran into each other when I was leaving to come get you after the fight," Mrs. Daniels replied, giving him a stern look.

My eyes widen,"You got into a fight?"

"Yeah, it's no big deal," Alec replied, scratching his neck.

His mother scoffed,"Alec, you broke the boy's wrist and his nose!"

"Well, he shouldn't have said anything about Peyton!" Alec fired back as his jaw clenches.

I stood there, awkwardly, between them. My hands started to slightly shake as memories of Malcom yelling at me took over my thoughts.

"Oh dear, are you alright? Are we frightening you?" Mrs. Daniels asked me, noticing my shaking.

I shook my head, and I put a smile on my face. "No ma'am. I'm just cold is all."

"Here, I'll go get you a blanket. Alec show our guest the rest of the house," Mrs. Daniels told us.

She walked out of the living room, and I looked back at Alec, who was watching my hands shaking.

"You lied, didn't you? We really did frighten you," Alec observed, taking a couple of steps towards me.

"I'm fine, I promise. I just had some bad memories resurface is all," I told him, waving it off.

"Being in foster care really did a take on you, huh?" Alec asked as he, gently, grabs my hands.

I nodded as he held my hands, calming my shakes. "It did. It was awful until the Cades took me in."

He scoffed, and I raised my eyebrows as I took my hands away from his,"What?"

He licked his lips before saying,"You said that foster care was awful until you met the Cades, but they lied to you about a lot of things. It doesn't seem like they saved you."

I shook my head with a scowl on my face,"They did save me. I was in an abusive foster home before them. I was beaten everyday for simple mistakes. I had to get a secret job to keep myself alive. So don't say the Cades didn't save me. They did. I don't have to worry about if I get to eat or being scared about getting hit in an argument."

"I'm so sorry, Campbell. I didn't realize you were an abusive foster home."

"Yeah, well, it's not something I'm happy to talk about," I replied with a sarcastic smile, sitting on the couch.

"You know, I don't have the glorious life either," Alec said, putting his hands in his pocket.

I raised an eyebrow and he continued,"My Dad left me when I was born like literally left the hospital not even an hour after my birth."

"That sucks," I told him with a sad smile.

"Yeah, I never understood why, but it doesn't matter now. My mom and I have Shawn, and he is my Dad in my eyes."

"You took his last name?" I asked him, remembering that his mother also has the same last name.

Alec nodded,"Yes. After their honeymoon, we went and got my last name changed. It was my mother's maiden name."

"Well, that's good."

"Alright, here is a big wooly blanket. Alec, why aren't you showing our guest the house?" Mrs. Daniels asked, coming into the living room.

"Sorry, Mom. We were talking," Alec replied as Mrs. Daniels gave me the blanket.

"Hmm," she mumbled with a smile.

My phone vibrated in my pocket, and I grabbed it. I looked to see that I have eighteen missed calls from all my brothers and twenty messages.

But it was the new one I got from Nick that made my heart drop.

Mom is in the hospital. - Nick
