Aaruj's POV

I was having my regular cappuccino at the cafeteria when something grabbed my attention.

"Did you tell her, you like her?"Chaitanya's words fell on my ears, making me alarmed like never before. I had my back to the table he was sitting at.

Soon a familiar voice joined the conversation."Not yet. But I will soon."

"I bet she will say yes. Who wouldn't?Because Kairav gets what he wants right."Chaitanya bragged.

"Chaitanya, it's different this time. I mean I never felt this nervous around all those girls I dated before. Though I am so confident when I talk to Nia, from inside I bloody freak out man. That never happened before with any of them."He replied with a audible sigh.

I counted numbers from one to hundred but it didn't make my rage any lesser. My fists were already curled up in a ball. They were itching to meet with Kairav's face.

"You are so in love, Kairya."Chaitanya said boiling the blood in vains.

Don't know about love , but your loser friend is definitely in trouble.

"Yes. I am."Kairav replied enthusiastically, then strummed his guitar.

I am done.

I got up from my chair. It tilted and fell to the ground with a crash, loud enough to grab eyeballs. Everyone in the cafeteria was now staring at me. I turned my attention to Kairav and his friend. Their eyes were already fixated on me.

I walked towards their table. Chaitanya looked a little scared to me. However Kairav was staring back at me with a scowl on his face.

"Stay away from her if you want to be alive and healthy."I warned Kairav.

"From who?"he asked non-chalently.

"Nia."I talked to him in a lower voice. So that no-one in the cafeteria would hear me say it. Not that I was a chicken to say it aloud.

But I didn't want Nia to be the hot topic of the gossips that spread across easily at our college every now and then.

"Okay you want me to stay away from her. I will. Only if you answer this question."He paused for while before resuming his talk again.

Is she your sister?"with this he smirked. That basterd dared to smirk in front of me.

"Meri Behen nahi. Teri bhabhi lagti hain.(Not my sister. She is your sister- in-law.)"I replied grabbing his collar.

He jerked away, leaning back on his chair lazily. "Beta, ye pyar wyar na tere bas ki baat nahi.Tu  jaa, jake tera gilli danda khel.(Love is not your thing. You go play cricket, little boy.)

"I am warning you. Stay away from her."I banged my fist on the table.

"Or?"He challenged me raising an eyebrow.

"I will beat the life out of you like I did last time."I glared at him.

He barked out a laughter."Man, you are so naive. You beat me. I got beaten. Then from nowhere comes our respected principal. You get suspended for two bloody weeks. Do you think our princi is some undercover superhero. Or he has that alarming phone like power puff girls?

Offcourse everything was well planned. All thanks to my Bro Chaitnya here. He had warned me in well advance about you guys when your stupid friend Warren had come to him;He was asking my whereabouts which was evident enough that you guys had something for me in store. Chaitanya brought the princi at venue on the right time. So Aaruj or whatever your name is you're messing with a wrong guy here?"

"Do you really think it was the principal who saved you from me? Then I am not the only one who is naive here. You should thank Nia. But hey don't even think about talking to her. Or this time your friend wouldn't even get time to call your knight-in-shining armour, our principal that is."

"What would you do kid? You will complain to your mommy?"He said in a mocking tone.

His words were enough to make me furious. I was about to punch him but my eyes fell on something else, making them glint like a devil.

I grabbed his guitar which was placed on one of the chair beside him. Before he could stop me. I thrashed it to the floor. I kept thrashing the instrument till it completely broke down.

After I was done, I shot him a victorious grin.

"Too bad. That you didn't agree to what I said." I faked sympathy.

Kairav looked at the pieces of his broken guitar for a while. Then turning to me he smiled; His smile made me angrier.

"You broke my guitar. I will break your heart. You will see how I win her heart and make her mine. You will see her falling for me. You will see me holding her closer in my arms. And it will hurt you right here."Kairav jabbed his finger at my chest.

I scowled at him.

"In your dreams, loser."

I made my way out of the cafeteria. I had to confess my love for her, before Kairav could. It may be some bloody competition for him. But for me; it was my life.

I was engrossed in my own thoughts when I bumped into someone.

I looked up at the person and received a smug look instead.

"Watch were ya going if you don't want to get beaten."Pranjal said mocking anger. Then he pushed me back playfully.

"Sorry sir. I won't do it again. Forgive me, please."I dramatically joined my hands.

He chuckled at my reaction.

I was contemplating on whether to ask him about Nia; I hadn't seen her since morning.

"Nia is not in. Apparently she weard herself off with the fest preparations."He replied smugly upon reading my thoughts.

"I wasn't going to ask about her."I replied trying to sound non-chalent.

"Aaruj, Billi ankhein bandh karke dudh piti hai. Wo ye sochti hai ki duniya use nahi dekh payegi.(The cat drinks milk while closing her eyes, thinking the world wouldn't see her. But it's doesn't work.)"He smirked.

"So you're comparing me to a cat?"I asked.

"Not you. It's based on true incidents. I have five cats at home."

"Whoa!!"I exclaimed.

"And also one little sister who apprantly thinks she is cat. She keeps meowing whole day. Mostly in my ears."he exasperated a sigh.

"In that case, Double whoa. It sucks being you."I sympathised.

"But she isn't that bad."he said, smiling fondly.

"Good for you, Pranjal. I can't even tolerate kids. I hate them."I scrunched my nose.

"You might wanna take that back. Nia adores them."he said warning me.

I smiled at his words"Why am I not surprised?"

"Hey Aaruj, I heard you broke Kairav's guitar. Is it true?"He asked suddenly, changing the topic.

"Yes."I replied boldly.

"Man! You rock."He took a dramatic bow. And continued talking." Bahot song dedicate karne ka shauk tha na.( He thought he would impress Nia with his stupid ways. What you did served him right.)".

"Your best friend wouldn't agree if she comes to know about it."I talked hinting towards Nia.

"She will come around. Don't worry."he gave me a reassuring smile.

"I would take your leave now, buddy. Gotta find my bunch of trouble makers."I fist pumped with him.

"Yo man. See ya later. And I saw your friends near the bio department."with this he made his way to the stairs.

I turned on my heels and was about to make my way to the biology department when I heard Pranjal calling out my name.

"What?"I asked.

"I am on team Aaruj. Ask her out before that idiot does."

Nia's POV

"Phoolon ka taro ka sab ka kehna hai
Ek hajaro mein meri behena hai

Toh kya hua agar aaj muze usse pura din jhelna hai

La la la la la la la la lalala"

"If you are done with your stupid la lala lala, get out of my room."I yelled at Mayank who was still busy, singing in a horrible manner.

"Get up. It's 9.30, you Kumbhkaran." his screeching voice echoed in my ears.

"Go away, mayankie monkey."I protested, covering my face with duvet.

"It's Saturday. You had promised me."He whined.

"Do you want me to come to her birthday party looking like some sleep deprived racoon. No right? Then let me sleep."I reasoned making my grip on the duvet tighter as Mayank was pulling it off.

"We have to buy something to wear. You can't come with me looking like a lunatic. It's a themed party."he chuckled, making me glare at him.

"If you are so ashamed of me. You shouldn't have accepted her invitation of bringing me along with you."I said in a hurt voice.

"Idiot. I was kidding. Even if she hadn't invited you, I would have taken you to the party."He replied pulling my cheeks.

"Really?"I gave him a doubtful look.

"Yes my darling sister. But since she has already invited you;Feel free to flatter yourself. She keeps talking about you. I mean she has hardly met you once."

Our meeting was causal, rather unplanned. I was insisting on eating my favourite strawberry ice-cream on a Sunday night. Mayank had reluctantly agreed to me take to ice-cream shop. There we ran into none other than Trishna. She was waiting for her friend who to our good luck, couldn't make it for some unfathomable reasons. After exchanging some pleasantries, I insisted her to join us. That's how Mayank and Trishna finally took a first step towards love, i.e Friendship.

I shot him a smirk."Do I smell jealousy?"

"No. It's probably Upma.Darn!!!
Mom had ordered me to watch it."He clicked his tongue. Then added"She is busy in watching that rotten daily soap 'Mera Satwa Sasural.'"

Before I could argue, I heard Veena auntie's rambling from the kitchen.

"Mayank, I told you to keep an eye on Upma. Can't you do this small thing for your mother? Not even your dad bothered to take his eyes out of the newspaper. You guys don't even let me watch TV for sometime. Dipanitha was about to kill her husband."

We both chuckled at her words.

"Lazy, get up. We have to pick our dresses and a gift for Trishna as well."he reminded me and then walked out of the room to face the wrath of angry Veena aunty.

************************************
I stared at my reflection in mirror. It looked different in a long sapphire coloured gown. The beautiful black embroidery till midriff portion, was adding more elegantness to the dress. My face was adorned with light make up. Thankfully the eyeliner was at it's best behaviour even after my shaky hands had given me a tough time while I applied it. These are the times when you miss your fashion guru, in my case It was Nikita aka Nikki.

The only thing I was worried about was the black heels I was wearing. They weren't that high though it was kind of uncomfortable for me to walk in them since I hardly wore heels. I walked out of my room after stealing another glance at myself in the mirror.

"Wow. Nia, you are looking so gorgeous."Veena aunty complimented when she noticed me approaching her in the living room.

Mayank was already there, waiting for me. He was wearing a lavender suit with a white button down shirt and a cute polka dot bow-tie.

"Mayank, I want a selfie with you two."Veena Aunty held out her cellphone to him.

"Mom. Nooooooooo."He said shaking his head in annoyance.

"Aunty, leave him. He would only prove to be a photo-bomber with that sadu (sad) face. Let's take a girlie selfie."I suggested,  taking her cellphone and helding it up in the air.

"Let's pout in this one."I said and we clicked what seemed like almost a tenth selfie while Mayank stood crossing his arms over his chest. A constant frown was plastered on his face.

"Vanar sena kuthe challi natun?  (where are you going kids ,wearing such pretty clothes?)"Chetan uncle enquired, looking between me and Mayank suspiciously.

"Nothing much, Dad. It's my friend's birthday. So we are going to her party."he said trying hard to hide the blush on his cheeks.

I cleared my throat"Ahem, ahem. Correction...very very very dear friend."

Mayank shot me a glare. Then looked at his parents who were giving him a questioning look.

"She is lying. We are just good friends. That's it."he covered his nervousness with veil of normality. I chuckled at him, earning myself another glare.

"Mayank, take care of Nia. And I want you guys back home by ten. Is it clear? "Veena aunty instructed like always.

"Mum, we'll return on time. Don't worry."Mayank assured her, grabbing my hand. He pulled me towards the door.

"What was that huh?"he asked once we were out of the house.

"What?"I asked feinging innocence.

"The stunt you pulled inside."he replied holding the door of taxi for me.

"Oh! I was kidding."I said sheepishly.

"Bad then. Cause your behaviour cost you an ice cream."He said once we were settled in the backseat of taxi.

"No."I protested."You had promised Mayank bhaiyaa."

"Mar gaya tumhara Mayank bhaiyya.(Your brother is dead to you.)"he said copying a bollywood dialogue from Shahrukh's film.

"Nahi. Marne se pehle mujhe ice - cream ke paise de do.(Give me money for buying ice-cream first and then die.)"I said in a mock serious tone.

"Dusht ladki(mean girl)."he pouted adorably.

I lean back on my seat, laughing at his childish reaction.

He covered his ears dramatically as if my laugh was the most tourtous thing in the universe.

"Did you tell her about your feelings? "I asked breaking the comfortable silence between us during the ride.

"I have been thinking about it lately.  But it's not easy."he said playing with his cellphone.

"Bhaiyaa, you have to tell her. Love needs to be expressed."I said looking at him.

"I know. But...."He stopped mid-sentence.

"Is it difficult than the thought of being just her friend for lifetime?"I questioned.

Here I am advicing my brother, about his love life when my own seems to be sinking down like boat. But it's easy to advice than implementing it. I will leave the latter to Mayank Bhaiya.

"By the way, you are looking pretty in your dress."he complimented suddenly changing the topic.

"You don't look bad yourself. And I had to look my best. After all meri bhabhiji ka jo birthday hain.(It's my sister-in-law's birthday.)"I smirked.

"Do you think she will like the gift?"he asked.

"Off course. She will. She had really liked my bracelet when we met last time."I replied patting his arm.

He smiled and realxed leaning back on the seat.

Soon the taxi reached to the venue of party,The Majestic Hotel.

Mayank got out of the taxi and held the door for me, as I made my way out.

After paying the fare, we made our way to the entrance of the grand hotel.

"Wow. It's really grand."I commented as I surveyed the vast lobby of the hotel.

"Off course it it. Trishna is very particular when it comes to celebrating her birthdays. I heard last year she had thrown party at 'Hotel Sun and Waves.' Coach loves his daughter so much."he said shaking his head.

"I feel nervous."I said looking around.

"Don't be. My sister is too pretty to be nervous. Just wink at me if any guy tries to make a move on you. I will break his face."Mayank replied.

"Bhai, I don't understand this. Why you boys are always ready to beat the life out of people?"I talked as we got into the empty elevator.

"Because we are strong."He gave me a lopsided grin.

"Bhaisahab, jab ladki ko propose karne ki baari aati hain to kaha jata hain ye tumhara strongness?(Dude, where does your so called strongness disappear when it comes to asking a girl out.)"

"Wo bhi Ho jayega.(Consider it done.)"He said brushing up his clothes as the elevator headed closer to eleventh floor.

I smiled at his words.

And then commented"Thank god! I thought I will only have to propose her on your behalf. Because you were being a sarkari tubelight(Slow)."

He chuckled at my words and I punched his arm playfully.

When elevator clicked open,  we made our way to the hall where party was hosted. As we swung open the doors, loud music welcomed us.

"Please grab your masks."A lady in her thirtees requested us from behind a desk. This desk had a colorful arrangement of beautiful masks.

We neared the desk and soon selected a pair of masks for both of us. We made our way to the birthday girl. She was talking to her friends and was laughing over something. She looked pretty in a maroon bodycon dress. Her curly hair were braided in a one side fishtail.

"Holy Patakha."I whispered to Mayank earning a glare from him.

"Hey Mayank!!!You made it.I thought you were not gonna come."she said enthusiastically when she noticed us walking towards her.

I stood beside him while he shook her hands, wishing her happy birthday.

"She took hours to get ready."Mayank bhaiya pointed me out.

I scowled at him.

"It has definitely paid off. Look at you Nia. You look so beautiful."she looked me up and down than engulfed me in bone - crushing hug.

I hugged her back and wished her.

"Guys you are suppose to wear the mask."Trishna reminded us and we quickly followed her instructions. She had a different mask in her hand. She was holding it by a stick attached to it.

"Mayank, I want you to meet someone. Do you know this girl named Cheryl. She told me the other day you guys were classmates in eighth."she talked enthusiastically while Mayank was busy in looking at her fondly.

Awe.

"Oh yeah. We were in same school. But we lost contact after tenth class."he replied.

"She is here at the party. Let's meet her."Trishna said pulling her along with him.

"Nia. come with us."Mayank insisted.

Soon Trishna too insisted to come. But I refused politely. I would have felt odd anyway. They walked away  joining the group of almost twenty people.

"Darling, you have no right to look so beautiful in every attire you wear."A familiar voice brought me back from my trance.

I turned around and met with a pair of green eyes outlined by a mask which looked like it was borrowed from Zoro. Kairav was standing in front of me with a devilish grin on his face. He was wearing a black tux.

How did he recognise me?

"I can recognise you from miles away. Some faces are too mesmerising to stay hidden behind the mask."He said reading upon my thoughts."

"What are you doing here?"I asked abruptly, ignoring his compliments.

"What are you doing here?"he asked me the same question.

"It's my brother's friend's birthday party."I answered.

"And it's my cousin's birthday party."he replied with a cocky smile.

"What?"I was beyond surprised.

"Trishna Di is my cousin. My Mama's (Uncle) daughter."he revealed.

"Kairav, where were you? Is this the time to come to your sister's birthday party."Trishna interrupted.

But soon she looked between me and Kairav.

"Oh my god! You guys know each other already. That's great."

"Trish Di, we go to same college. We are in same class."He replied smiling like a fool.

"Mayank, they know each other. How cool is that! Our little siblings are already friends."She talked to Mayank who had recently joined us.

Soon a girl interrupted our conversation and stole away the birthday girl for a while.

"So Kairav, how's college? I heard you recently transferred to Mumbai. Trishna had mentioned to me
