"All right there birthday boy, I think you're all set. What do you think Nurse Annie?" Dr Chris Waters stated as he finished super gluing the small gash on the little boys head. Gray green eyed stared at him in awe as the little boy ate a lollipop, something the previous nurse had given him to keep him calm. Annie smiled at the boy and handed him some paper and a pen to doodle with.

"Hmmm, I don't know Dr. Waters. Do you think this will stop him from eating ice cream and cake?" Nurse Annie teased little Thomas making the boy gulp and glance nervously towards the doctor who had just examined his head.

"I think that he'll be right as rain in no time at all. After all, we didn't have to do anything to his mouth or tummy," Chris replied lightly tickling the boy to check his reflexes. Listening to the giggles, Chris glanced over  to the freckled face of the little boy's  older sister who was also happily munching on her lollipop. "And how are you Ms. Pretty Princess?" Chris asked while taking off his gloves and grabbing a clean pair. "Are you hurt anywhere?"

Little Jessica shook her head no. "No sir, I'm always ready to eat cake and ice cream!" Chris let out a hearty laugh.

"Ok you two,"Nurse Annie chuckled, "you're ready to back to your mom right now."  She was referring  to Sara  who was currently sitting in the waiting room. Most of the staff thought it was odd she refused to come and be near the children especially after loudly demanding that she was their mother. Neither Chris nor Annie missed the look on the children's face at her words of Sara being their mother or the way both children blanched and moved back towards each other.

"No," Thomas all but screamed at the nurse and the doctor, "That's not my mama but a meanie that daddy loves more than mama now!"

Chris looked at the children and sighed. He knew first hand what they were experiencing and it broke his heart. Just as he was about to say something the curtain that was drawn for privacy was thrown open and the most beautiful woman Chris had ever seen came fumbling in. She had the same gray green eyes as her son, her brown hair was piled on top of her head in a messy bun, and her round face and heart shaped lips totally free of makeup. She was in a red t shirt and some well worn jeans that showed off her curves to perfection. She looked terrified and completely beautiful at the same time. Chris felt his breath catch in his throat as he watched her run over to get to her children.

"Mama!" Jessica cried as she lunged towards Melanie with tears in her eyes. "You came, you really came!"

"Of course I did baby!! I'll always come when you need me!" Melanie said gathering Thomas into her arms too. Jessica began sobbing making Melanie flinch and begin to look over her daughter for injuries. "What is it baby? What's wrong? Are you hurt?" Melanie cried checking her daughter out.

"No mama, I'm fine. But Sara said you wouldn't come cause you don't love us anymore!" Jessica sobbed clinging to her mother.

Chris grimaced at what the little girl said. There was now no doubt in his mind that the lady that refused to come into the room while he examined these adorable children was the other woman. All the tell tale signs were there. The tears and words of the sweet little girl in front of him only confirmed his suspicions.

"Oh my baby girl", Melanie cried as she rocked Jessica in her arms. "Mama will always be here for you and Thomas. No matter what!  I promise".  As she sat rocking her children Melanie turned towards Chris.

"Hi," she gulped taking in his ruggedly handsome appearance, noting his deep blue eyes and almost blue black hair. "Are the kids free to go?"

"Dr. Chris Waters," Chris stated holding his hand out watching as Melanie struggled to untangle her children to shake his hand, "Your children are perfectly fine and free to go once we get you to sign some paperwork.  Just need to make sure the Birthday Boy doesn't hit his head on anything for a few days."

"I can still eat cake and ice cream too Mama!", Thomas exclaimed clapping his hands together. Chris chuckled while Melanie laughed and caressed her young sons face.

"Well, I'm certainly happy to hear that because I think that after tonight, cake and ice cream is just what we need to make us all feel better," Melanie stated smiling at both her children who were nodding their head in rapid agreement.

Chris stared at the woman awestruck. He had never responded this way to any woman before and was about to say something to her when they were interrupted by another nurse with discharge papers and an older lady coming in behind her.

"Grandma," Jessica exclaimed jumping off the exam table and running to hug the older lady, "Did you see Daddy, is he ok? We get to go home with Mama tonight and eat our cake and ice cream!"

Tammy chuckled and hugged both children while casting glances at the handsome doctor who seemingly fancied her precious daughter-in-law. Nodding towards the man she whispered something in the children's ears while helping to gather their things together.

"David's car has been towed and he's out of surgery. Sara won't let any of us in to see him, so we are free to go when you're ready," Tammy told Melanie while she signed the paperwork. Melanie glanced up briefly and Chris saw the pain in her eyes at the older woman's words. He assumed this was the beautiful young mother's mom sitting in front of them but now he thought otherwise. Her obvious disappointment and disdain for this Sara was clearly etched on her face.

"Okay," Melanie calmly replied. "I like my munchkins home with me anyway! Want to come back to our house for cake Tammy?"

The older lady simply shook her head and ushered the children out the door while Melanie handed her the keys to the car. Turning and smiling softly, Melanie extended her hand to Chris again.

"Thank you for taking such good care of my children, Dr. Waters, I truly appreciate everything."

Chris smiled as he shook her hand and Melanie felt her heart drop at his devilishly handsome good looks.

"All in a day's work ma'am," he stated tipping an imaginary hat. Melanie smiled nodded her head and slowly made her way towards the exit. Thankfully the emergency room wasn't that busy so Chris had time to watch her leave.

"She's a looker", a deep male voice and beside Chris. Startled Chris turned to see his friend and colleague, Dr. Josh Jameson.

"Yeah she certainly is," Chris replied his eyes lingering on the automatic doors Melanie had just walked out.

"Did you at least get her number?" Josh asked eyeing his friend curiously. He had never seen Chris so taken with a woman before, not since freshman year of college when Chris was madly in love with Rebecca Jones.

"Naw man, not the right time", Chris replied putting the charts away and picking up the next one for a new patient coming in.

"Well, maybe you'll see her again," Josh stated clapping Chris on the back and heading off to another exam room. Chris glanced towards the automatic doors one last time. He hoped he would see the beautiful Melanie Thompson again, and soon.
