What to wear on a first date?

I had all week to think about it, now it was Saturday morning and I had no clue.

Should I be cute? Should I be practical? Should I try and find something...sexy? Whatever that meant. I happen to live with two very sexy girls, maybe I should ask them.

Or better yet, I called my two long-time friends I grew up with, Chantel and Juju. My ride or dies.

"College girl, what's up!" Chantel yelled at me.

"Hi!"

"Don't hi me bitch, what's good? Meet any hot boys?"

I smiled so hard. "Actually...."

"Naw, wait up." I could hear Juju in the room. They were cousins, but close like sisters and lived together and shared the same bedroom in a small three-bedroom house with five other siblings/cousins, and both their moms. "I need to know err'thang!"

"So there's this one guy-"

"Oooooh!" they both said.

"Listen!" I giggled at them. "One guy I met in my English class, he's Hottie Tottie. Okay, then my RA, whom I also have a class with is Mr. Perfect. He is divine! And then...his sister-"

"Yo, wait, huh? I knew it! I knew you were gay. That's why you never talked to any guys in school," Chantel said.

"That's because no guy talked to me!" I let out a frustrated sigh. "The sister is very hot. Like, she's some kind of mystical being or something that floats around. Last week, she was in my room, naked and..."

"Naked!" they both yelled out.

I blushed a bit. "Ok see, what had happened was...I think she linked up with my roommate. Anyway, she tells me she likes me."

"You ain't get a pic? I wanta see," Juju said, who was very gay, and loud and proud about it.

"Of who? Hottie, Perfect or his sister?"

"All of them!"

"Well look, Hottie asked me to hang out with him today. I think it's a date. I don't even know if I like him as much as Mr. Perfect."

"Girllllllll," Chantel said. "I needed to go to college with my broke and dumb ass. You're lucky."

By lucky, she means I struggled to get Cs. My grade point average was not that high. I was not an honor student by any means. I worked hard to just float by and be an average student. School was hard. I hated tests, and I hated writing papers. So no scholarships came my way, and I didn't think I would be able to afford college.

After I graduated high school I thought would spend the next year with Chantel and Juju going wild and wilding out. Maybe spend more time with my dad and Angel. Maybe work at her shop for extra cash. Then on my eighteenth birthday, my dad and Angel sat me down and explained to me I had a trust fund set up for me. Something about Angel coming into some money a few years ago, not wanting it for herself so she gave it to me and my sister.

Half a million dollars. I was rich! At first, I did not know how to feel about it. What did I ever do to deserve that money? I mean, I loved Angel as if she was my mother, but she now had a biological child she could give it to. They spoiled AJ and would spoil the next kid.

Then I thought, don't be stupid Rayvn Nicole Lawrence. Free money! A lot of free money. And Angel said I could use it for college or anything else I wanted. It was more than enough for four years at Mizzou. I wasn't going to dip into it any more than I had to. I already had my savings account from working with Angel. I used that to buy my car.

Too bad it was old and already high mileage and nothing cool. I could buy a brand new car in cash, but I didn't want to blow through the money. What if after college I could not find a decent job? The money was so I had options.

Something my friends did not have. They neither had the grades nor money to attend college. Juju wanted to go, but she struggled in her basic high school classes. Chantel wanted to go to cosmetology school, and she was still trying to figure out how financially she could go.

"She's lucky she has a rich stepmom," Juju said.

I never told my friends about the money. They assumed Angel was footing the bill because she was rich. No, and I was not going to correct them.

"You guys can come and visit me anytime. Please do."

"Oh, we will."

"Guys, this is my first date, ever!"

"Date? I thought you said you were just hanging out with him?" Chantel asked.

"I mean, that's what he said...but a boy and a girl hanging out, equals date, right?"

"Not necessarily. Maybe he thinks you're just a cool girl to hang out with. Maybe he doesn't have any dude friends and you will do. You should have cleared that up."

I groaned because she was right. He said hang to do something other than the football game. That could be anything.

"So what should I wear then? Something cute so he knows this is a date? Or something casual like, you're just a guy, cool."

"If he is hot like you say he's hot, defo look cute. Never let a boy-"

"Or a girl!" Juju interrupted.

"See you looking like a scrub."

After I finished the call with them I looked over my things. I needed to go shopping. My school clothes were limited to just that, school. I had nothing cute that was date-worthy or even hanging out with a hot guy worthy. Not a dress, maybe we were going somewhere that was not appropriate. Jeans and a t-shirt were too casual and laid back, this might be an actual date. I pulled out black jeggings and a nice fitted shirt, again with a Black woman on the front, this time with locs.

Then I tackled my hair, adding a headband and calling it a day. I felt I looked decent. Cute. And King said he liked me...and I am sure he meant it in the way I hope he meant it.

A little lip gloss and it was time to go downstairs to meet King. He texted me that he was downstairs in the lobby.

I didn't see any of my roommates, so I would text them to tell them where I was going and who I was with. What if this boy did something strange? I didn't know him that well. I had my mace my daddy gave me and a mean right hook.

He was sitting in a chair in the lobby looking at his phone and my heart skipped a beat. Maybe I was feeling him too much already. His locs were hanging, white t-shirt and jeans, nothing special but he looked so freaking cute.

"Hey."

He stood when he saw me. "Yo, these fools go crazy over a little football game. There was another parade or something, I could barely find any parking."

"Oh no! Maybe you don't want to move out of the space you have then, we can hang out here."

"No, I promised you a day out and we're going out, leaving this crazy campus."

We headed out the door. Outside, there was a crowd of people walking, Mizzou colors black and gold on, some of them with faces painted, screaming and cheering. Same school spirit, different week.

"Maybe we should go to the game, seems like everyone will be there."

"No way fresh, there will be time to catch the Mizzou fever later. Have you seen much of the city?"

"Not really. I came down with my stepmother and father. She went here but that was a long, long time ago." Angel was older than my father by a couple of years, so she was old.

"My car is further down here around the corner. Hope you don't mind walking."

"I wore Keds."

He looked down at my feet. "I don't know if that means your feet or comfortable or what-"

"I don't mind walking. It's good for you. It's exercise.  I don't do any other exercise so this will be it. Maybe sometimes I jump rope...no, I haven't done that since I was a kid. Maybe I need to do that more. Or run. What do you do? Do you exercise or do you-" I was rambling and he stopped me.

"I played football."

"You play football? Well, then why-"

"I said I played football. Peewee through high school. I was good I guess, I just knew I didn't want to go pro or anything, so why play in college."

"Could you have gotten a scholarship good?" I asked as we continued to take the main street through campus, away from the football activities.

"I did. But I didn't want to play."

"You don't like football anymore?" I felt like we were playing twenty questions, but I was nosy and I wanted to know everything about this hot guy.

"I love it. It's not my life though. I want to do other things."

"What's your major?"

"Mechanical engineering."

"Oooo, does that mean you're smart?" There was something about smart guys, I had to admit, that made them even hotter. That was just my opinion, though I don't know if that made them better boyfriend material.

"I do okay."

"But yet you take freshman English in your sophomore year."

"And I explained to you why." He stopped as we made it to his black Ford Focus. A lot better car than my hooptie. "I took as many classes in my major as I could. Spread out those Gen Ed classes. I wasn't ready for writing papers and doing things I already did in high school. Man, it's bogus." We got in his car and it was nice and clean inside, again, unlike my hooptie.

"We pay tuition here, we should be able to take the classes we want when we want. You gotta disrupt the system sometimes, fresh."

"I'm just here to get my education, a degree, and then a great job or start my own business like my step mummy. She's the best! She owns this awesome store back in St. Louis and I worked there a few summers and on break and-"

"So you're from St. Louis." He gave me a sneer and snorted. "Figures."

"What does that mean!"

"K.C., baby!"

"Ugh! You guys suck."

"Not as much as y'all baseball team. And what happened to football?"

"There will be no Cardinals slander. Ever!"

"Bet. Give my KC Royals some love though. And the Chiefs. We hold it down in my city."

I slapped my hand on my face. St. Louis and Kansas City were the largest and second-largest cities in the state of Missouri, and they always seemed to compete at things. Of course, I felt my city was superior. I was ready to argue him down and win that fight.

"As far as football, the Rams can suck it! We'll get another team one day. My city is better than yours, let's agree on that and not start World War III."

"If you say so, fresh."

So far, so good on my first experience with a boy...alone in his car. Hopefully, I don't screw up this "date."

A/N: If you are from St. Louis or Kansas City and went to college anywhere in Missouri, there always was a battle between these two cities. And St. Louis will always win!

Do you think this is a date with Rayvn and King? Or are they just hanging out? More of them in the next chapter.
