Adalyn's POV

Saturday is my new favourite day. A day I didn't have to face Grayson in the hallway or deal with Simon's constant apologies. They both just made me so angry! And Grayson's stupid face with those seductive eyes.

"Uuuugh." I placed my pillow over my face and pressed it down. "Please oh cruel world. End my suffering."

"Your suffering has only begun." I removed the pillow from my vision and saw my brother in the doorframe.

"Don't do it!" I shouted hearing footsteps rush forwards my bed. And with a thud my brothers weight crushed down onto me.

"Dads coming by today. Mom wanted me to remind you to ask him about a job."

"Get off me you whale!" I yelled as he slowly, I mean slowly, rolled off me.

"Mom's getting breakfast ready. She wants you up and ready."

I groaned throwing my pillow towards him, "Aha you missed!"

Managing to get myself out of bed I made my way to the kitchen where mom was making pancakes. It must be a special occasion if she was actually cooking and not just staring into paperwork.

"Honey can you take the garbage to the curb, please?" I nodded grabbing the bag and making my way out the door.

"Naveen?" I asked shielding my eyes from the sun. I nearly dropped the bag at the sight of him, "What are you doing here? Is something wrong? Is Grayson okay?"

"That's the thing Adalyn. I don't want to do this but it needs to be done. You need to stay away from Grayson. My family and his life depends on it."

"Naveen what are you talking about? Grayson and I aren't friends. In fact, I despise him. You have nothing to worry about." He's brows knitted together in confusion.

"You're angry at him. You don't hate him." I rolled my eyes. Like he knew anything about me. I continued down the driveway with the bag and placed it right beside him.

"I don't know what this is about, but Grayson and I want nothing to do with each other." It was only partly a lie, because a part of me wished that Grayson wanted to be my friend.

"We both know that's a lie. You feel drawn to him in ways you can't explain." It's like he was reading my mind or something.

"Your kind tore my family apart once before and I will not let you do it again." He spit at me.

"What is it with you people and calling other people "our kind"? It's just rude to think you're on a higher pedestal than everyone else, you're human just like the rest of us." This made him chuckle.

"You have no idea princess." I just stared at him in disbelief. Why is this family so fucking hostile?

"Well whatever you came here for, you aren't going to get it." I stated turning back towards my house. He grabbed my arm causing me to wince, "Ow, Naveen, you're hurting me."

"Kind of the point." His intense green eyes poured into mine. They started illuminating white around the pupil.

"Naveen please. What do you want?" I crumpled to my knees his vice grip tightening.

"My family safe. From you." He spit at me. How was I such a threat to him?

"What am I gonna do to your family?" I asked trying to understand where any of this was coming from.

Apparently he didn't like that question as his other hand shot out grabbing around my throat. I gasped for air as he lifted me off the ground.

"NAVEEN!" I couldn't hear the voice clearly as my vision darkened around the edges.

Then he was gone and I felt gravity regain its hold as I fell towards the ground. Before I made contact with the concrete I was pressed firm into Grayson's chest. I, still gasping for breath, looked up to see Grayson's intense stare. So full of concern, he looked once again vulnerable like that night in his fathers lab.

I looked over my shoulder to see Naveen was laying in the street. He face smashed into the ground with blood pouring from his nose. "Is he okay?" I asked trying to get to my feet.

"He's okay. Just relax."

"Did you do that to him? How-You caught me-Grayson?" I searched his face but only saw the muscle clenched in his jaw as he held onto me tightly.

"I'll explain everything. Get inside. I'll come see you later today. I need to get him home and your dad will be arriving soon."

How did he know my dad was on his way? He lifted me to my feet and made sure I was steady before walking to his unconscious brother. He lifted him over his shoulder with no effort and started walking.

Is he really going to carrying him all the way home? I subconsciously reached for my throat. It was tender, I was going to have to find a scarf or something to cover it up.

"Addy? How long does it take to take out the trash?" My head whipped towards my mothers voice who was standing in the doorway. I looked back towards the direction of Grayson but he was nowhere in sight. So he can teleport now too, eh?

My dads car came into view pulling right up beside me.

"Hey kiddo," he paused looking into my eyes, "You okay? you look like you've seen a ghost." I just flashed him a fake smile and nodded turning back towards the house.

My mom searched my face looking for answers in my unexpectedly long journey to the curb. "You okay hun, your neck is all red." I instinctively reached up to cover my neck.

"Yeah mom, I'm fine." Fine for someone who just got chocked by someones brother for no fucking reason.

Grayson's POV

No matter how hard I tried, I still managed to reach out and find her everyday. I didn't mean to project my powers in order to make sure she was safe. I couldn't help it knowing Amya was out to hurt me. She woke up happy, most likely just in love with the idea of not facing me today. Her happiness was quickly snuffed out though.

I sighed. I angered her very much.

Diara stood in my doorway staring at the back of my head with a great passion. "Good luck getting inside my head."

"I don't need to get into your head to know what you are doing." She commented.

"I can't help it. It's like second nature to feel her every move." I didn't really know how to explain it. Diara knew how much I hated the humans. I was miserable knowing this fragile creature had power over me, "I wish I couldn't."

"You're letting her get inside your head. You just have to turn it off Gray. Something is holding you back. What's different about her?" I shrugged not quite understanding it myself.

"I honestly don't really know." she could sense the honesty from my tone.

Then I felt panic deep within my core causing me to fall to my knees. "Grayson, What's wrong?"

"She's in trouble." In a flash I used my super speed to get to her location. Her house from my understanding.

"NAVEEN!" I shouted in disbelief and fear at the scene I was witnessing. Naveen had her by the throat completely off the ground. What the fuck?!

I could feel the power surging through my veins as I shot forward. Naveen's head whipped towards me as he felt the power come off of me in waves. Grabbing his hand and removing it from her throat I snapped his arm in half. Pushing off the ground I used my strength to slam his face into the paved road.

At the speed of light I rushed back managing to catch Adalyn's body before she hit the ground. She was gasping for breath but I could feel the relief wash over her as she pressed herself closer into my chest. Her eyes stared so intensely into mine before she looking over her shoulder.

"Is he okay?" She asked after catching her breath. She began pushing against me as she saw his body limp in the street.

"He's okay. Just relax." I soothed holding her tighter to my chest.

"Did you do that to him? How-You caught me-Grayson?" Her eyes flickered over my face as is searching for answers. There was no way I could explain this in a logical way.

"I'll explain everything. Get inside. I'll come see you later today. I need to get him home and your dad will be arriving soon." I told her helping her to her feet. I had to get Naveen home before people noticed. I could sense her dad was going to arrive any minute as I heard his tires squeak around the corner. I could here his thoughts from here without even trying.

I made sure she was stable before I walked towards my brother. I knew he was going to be all shades of pissed off when he woke. I lifted him over my shoulder and began walking north towards home. I needed to get him to Titus to heal his broken arm.

I could feel she was confused from where she was standing as I was walking away. Her mother, however, gave her enough distraction for me to very quickly disappear and find my way inside our home.

"What the heck happened?" Declan questioned as I laid Naveen on the couch. Titus rushed over ready to heal his injuries, "Did you do this?" Declan stared at me for several moments as I rubbed my face. I was exhausted from having to use so much force against Naveen in order to stop him.

"He gave me no choice. I found him choking Adalyn in a street filled with human residences. He was lucky no one saw." Well, I hoped no one saw.

"No one but dear ol' Addy." Zahara hissed, "You should have let him finish the job." The look I shot Zahara was filled with over protective anger.

"Because a human death would be great news coverage? You ready for another move so soon?" I spit.

"Grayson is right. He did the right thing." Raymond spoke coming out from the cave in the basement, "We can't risk exposure like that. Not only would it catch eyes of people here, it would attract the academy. Is that what you want?"

"That girl is tearing this family apart!!" Zahara was furious as electricity crackled in the air.

"Go ahead Zahara, hit me. If that's what will make you feel better!"

Oh she hit me all right. I could feel my muscles clench as my knees gave out beneath me. I managed to catch myself at the last moment feeling my body convulse uncontrollably. I let out a laugh as I got to my feet. Zahara was astonished. She had thrown all she had at me.

"Is that all you got?" I asked staring into her dimming eyes with my intensely transcendent ones. She had weakened herself in anger as I could feel the power in my building, "Is it my turn?"

"Grayson, don't." Raymond spoke softly causing my eyes to flicker to his. I released my mind and calmed my nerves still sensing the fear in Zahara's body. I knew I couldn't hurt her, no matter how mad I was. I was much stronger. I needed to be the one in control. Declan walked her out of the room as Titus grabbed my arm.

"He'll be okay." With that said he followed the others upstairs as I sat on the couch next to Naveen. I brushed his hair to the side as Raymond handed me a cloth to wipe the blood away.

"What the hell was he thinking?" I asked placing the cloth on the coffee table.

"That's only something he can answer." Ray took the cloth and walked into the kitchen leaving me beside Naveen.

I watched as his eyes slowly peeled open. Startled with fear he struggled to move away from me. Placing a hand on his chest I held him down with little effort.

"What were you thinking?" I questioned. He only seemed focus on escaping as he fought against my hand.

Raymond came back into the room, "He's scared Grayson."

"I won't let him go until he answers my question." My tone was firm.

Naveen grabbed my hand trying to use his powers against me but he was too weak to conjure any strength, "She needs to die. Amya is right." he huffed out.

"Amya told you to do this?" Raymond stood there listening, carrying the same emotions as I. Fear and confusion.

"She told me it was the only way to keep you safe. Keep us safe. Adalyn is a threat as she will ruin the mating ceremony." the mating ceremony? What the fuck is she talking about?

"Naveen, that won't happen. I won't let it." I stated lifting my hand to take off some of the pressure.

"You're connected with her Gray. You bonded with her in ways you should have with your family. We have a duty to our race." He paused sitting himself up, "You know I'm right."

"What is he talking about?" Raymond questioned.

It made sense. Since that day I touched her wrist I had been obsessed with knowing where she was at all times. I searched for her essence in the crowd at school. She heated my skin and helped me heal in ways Titus couldn't.

I did make a mistake. I let her get too close, my body wanted her.

"I can change it." I looked sternly in Naveen's eyes, "I will choose a mate tonight, it will replace Adalyn's bond."

"You bonded with Adalyn? Why didn't you speak of this with me?" Ray didn't quite understand how our mating rituals worked, but it always started with a bond. A bond that interconnected our emotions on a basic level, which explained how I could sense Adalyn's emotional state without having to touch her.

"I'm sorry Ray. I didn't know what happened between us. But it's like I can't stand to be away from her. I constantly search for her." He stared at me waiting for me to explain more, "like right now, I can tell she's sitting in her father's car on North Street feeling confused and worried about me."

"That's bad. I thought mating was a conscious decision?" Raymond sat on the chair across from us as Naveen laid there, eyes closed but still awake.

"Sometimes, mates are chosen for us. It's like our bodies just know. I did this accidentally."

"That doesn't make it any less true. Maybe you're meant to be with her." Ha. Is he serious? Like I would chose to be mated to a human.

"Ray, we don't even know if my genes are compatible with a humans. Not to mention my duty to my people."

"But you've considered it." Ray stated with a smile on his face.

Of course I'd considered it. Numerous times since I was a child. The uncertainties of a mutant child were what held all of us back, not to mention the ill intentions of the human race. Adalyn seemed to be different, or at least I wanted to believe she was. The other part of me thought that she was just as evil as those at the Midnight Experiment, like Dr. Carson.

It's like part of me knew she'd accept that I was different and the other part denied her good nature as nothing but a falsehood. Maybe she could accept that I wasn't from Earth? Part of me hoped she'd fight for me.

"I'm going to go out and check on her." I told him rising from the couch. He just nodded knowing he couldn't change my mind, "Just make sure Naveen is okay."

~

It was easier to get inside her house than I thought as I snuck past her mom with no effort. Her face in paperwork made things easier. I shut Adalyn's door shut behind me and stared at the contents in front of me. She was still out with her dad and her brother, ConnorI determined from his name being spoken from her lips across a diner table.

Her bed was unmade with pieces of her essence trailed inside of the sheets. Her whole room smelled like her. I ran my fingers over the Polaroids of her and Cara, Simon.

Grabbed the one of Simon I projected my mind towards her, searching for this memory. I saw Simon sitting across from her, sharing a plate of fries. Him laughing at her milkshake mustache. The way she felt about him struck me.

She loved him, more than a friend. There was something about their relationship that I could't determine from the photography. I placed the photograph back where it came from searching further. Her bio homework spread across her desk still untouched from Friday.

Looking through her closet I found pieces of her childhood scattered throughout. Digging through her memories. I was getting to know her from each item I touched.

I could sense she was on her way home as she excitedly climbed in the car after her dad paid for their dinner. It's like she knew I was going to be here waiting for her.

I laid on her bed taking off my shoes carefully. Her scent engulfed me as I closed my eyes. I was still drained from protecting her from Naveen.

With that I drifted to sleep, I knew I would wake when she got here.

It had only been thirty minutes or at least it felt like that long from the quick power nap I had taken.

My eyes fluttered open as a car screeched to a stop. Using my hearing I captured Adalyn's voice saying goodbye to her father. Her mother got up from the table. I could hear her shuffle her way into the kitchen to make herself something to eat.

The front door opened and her brother pushed by Adalyn to rush upstairs to his room. I stood from the bed putting on my shoes once more. Adalyn made her way slowly up the stairs towards me. She knew I was here when she opened the door. I stood in the shadows as her hand fumbled for the light.

Using my telepathic abilities I switched on the light for her.

"Grayson?" She whispered as if shocked to see me.

"I know you sensed me."

"Sensed you?" She laughed, "I'm just waiting for the 'I saved your life but that doesn't make us friends' speech."

"That won't happen this time." I said watching her dig through her closest, "You're cold." I stated taking off my own sweater and handing it to her. She took it hesitantly.

"Are you going to explain to me what happened this morning? What you did isn't within logical reason." She was very observant, I had to give that to her.

"None of this is going to make sense Adalyn." I told her as she placed my sweater over her head.

"Then explain it to me." this was my chance to see if what I felt deep within was true. Whether or not she would accept what I was.

"Promise to not freak out?" She gave me a 'really' look before sitting herself on her bed. She motioned her hand for me to continue, "Adalyn, I'm not from here."

"I knew that. You just moved into Canada."

"That isn't what I meant." I sighed in frustration. She stood from the bed and reached for my hand.

"You can tell me anything, Grayson." I stared into her hazel eyes. My heart told me I could trust her. My mind told me no.

"I'm not from this planet Adalyn." She pulled her hand out of mine and stepped back a few times. She was clearly not expecting that to be what came out of my mouth.

"You have to be joking." Well, I wish I was. She looked at my facial features to determine if I was lying, "You're not joking." She said in disbelief.

"My planet was attacked by a once loyal neighbouring planet. Only eight of us escaped to land here. The government covered it up as a meteor crash and kept us to themselves. We-We were experimented on,"

"Oh Grayson." I stepped closer to her to rest myself by her side. I grabbed her hand giving it a squeeze.

"we got away a few weeks later and lost one of our sisters Amya. We all thought she was dead until now. Ray found us hiding, barely surviving. It was very hard taking care of my family, especially with Titus and Kavita being toddlers at the time. We trusted Ray with our lives and all of our most precious secrets." She seemed to be taking everything well, but her emotions were mixed.

"So all of you are related?"

"Ha, no. None of us are related. My father made sure of that for mating purposes."

"Mating purposes?" mating was a term that humans did not use as a way to separate themselves from the animal kingdom somehow.

"We have to make sure our race survives. Even though, it will be like marrying a sister." I didn't realize how upset I was about the situation. I wanted to marry whom I wanted, not marry because I had to. As a prince, I had no choice.

"So you have to pick Diara or Zahara? To save your kind. So that's
