Chapter 2:

Damien:

“I asked for lemon juice, not lime juice!” The customer shrieked, throwing the lime juice at my face. “ Bring me some LEMON juice!” He shouted, emphasizing on “lemon” as he banged the empty glass onto the table.

I wiped the lime juice off my face and calmly took the empty glass away, although I was fuming inside. It took every ounce of self-control that I could possibly have, or if I even had any to avoid punching that fellow. Some customers really need a punch on their faces.

It’s been two weeks since I’ve arrived to this small, pathetic town and it’s been a few days since I’ve took on this waitering job at a French café by the name of C’est La Vie . I don’t have much money with me and I’m currently renting a small apartment for myself. The reason why I moved to this miserable town is because no other high school would accept me other than Valley High since I had been expelled by many schools.

I’m forced, against my will by my own mother to enroll into this school and she hopes that I’ll be able to finish High School at least, before I’m able to return to my own home. I'm not poor, no. Not to brag but I'm from a wealthy family. So why the hell must I enrol myself in Valley High and when I could just hire a private tutor to teach me? Well, let's say that I have a really horrible reputation and no tutor would want to tutor me either. And if you're wondering why the hell must I work to pay my fees, that's because my mum hopes that I'll be more 'independent' or so she claims.

I hurried into the kitchen and poured the lemon juice into the glass and hurried out before the unreasonable customer could make another big scene.

“Damien,” My manager called as I entered the kitchen, his arms were folded and he looked displeased. Shit. “That customer was one of our valued customer and we lost him, thanks to you. I’m cutting your pay.” He added bluntly before walking away.

“Man, you must be kidding!” I muttered under my breath.

I finished work at around 7pm, the sun was beginning to set, painting the sky a crimson red. My hand phone began to ring just as I left the café – Looks like I have work.

“We need you to help us out. Details at Rendezvous bar. “ The person on the line explained briefly before putting down the phone.

To Rendezvous bar it is.

It didn’t take long before I was standing at the entrance to the bar. I made my way into the bar and started to search the usual spot to see if the gang was there. Yes, they were there as per normal, drinking a few cans of beer and smoking. I work for them and my job is to fight. It’s not a proper job but how can I survive with a part time job as a waiter at a screwed up café?

I used to fight for many gangs and I hop from one gang to another, depending which gang would pay me more, that’s how I get expelled from my previous schools. Why do I do this? For excitement and money, of course.

Gary, the leader, gave me the details that a few guys from another gang wanted a fight at 10pm near the dark alley, around the corner.

“How many guys will there be?” I asked, I needed to know how many men I would be fighting against.

“Three or four. You can handle it alone, can you?” Gary replied, after taking a puff from his cigarette.

“No big. How much will you offer me?” I asked.

“Five hundred. I’ll pay you half first, when you’re done with them, I’ll give you the rest.” Gary said as he took out a 250 dollars and placed it on the table, “Deal?”

“Deal.” I replied, as I took the money and put it in my pocket.

Gary smiled and gave me a friendly pat on my shoulder, “Order what you wanna drink, bro. It’s gonna be quite awhile before the showdown.”

                                                                  ~.~.~.~.~

It was late at night. The streets were silent, not a figure was in sight. I leaned against the wall and looked at my watch. It was ten, on the dot. They should be here any time now.

“Well, well. Look who’s here.” The voice said in a slightly amused tone, “Could you be…” He paused for a moment, “The guy that Gary sent?”

I looked up and saw three guys advancing towards me. The guy who spoke was in the middle, his partner, on the left was smoking a cigarette while the guy on the left was crushing an empty beer can.

“Enough talk.” I’m tired of people beating around the bush, all I want to do was to kick their ass as soon as possible and get my money. “Let’s get down to it.”

The guy in the middle, who is probably the leader, let out a snort of contempt, “You? Alone? Piece of cake.”

He turned to the guy on the left and gestured at me. “Brian, you handle it.”

Immediately, the guy named Brian tossed the crushed beer can that he was holding and walked towards me, cracking his fist. He increased his speed and hurled himself at me, but he was too slow. I dodged to the side and he had to stop himself from crashing into the wall. That was my cue, I pushed him to the wall and gripped his blonde hair before banging his head on the wall.

The leader signalled to the red-haired guy on the right to join in the fight. Oh yeah? Two versus one? They never do play fair do they? I released my grip and the dark blonde guy groaned in pain as he leaned against the wall, feeling dizzy.

The red-haired dude punched me hard on the face. I winced in pain and I felt blood trickle down my nose.

“You like that, huh?” The red-haired dude asked, as he grabbed me by the shirt and started to punch my stomach.

Each punch was more excruciating than the previous one, I knocked my head against his and immediately, he released his grip on me and staggered backwards, placing a hand on his forehead. I felt my head spin as I tried to steady myself, I placed my hand on my stomach and bent down.

It took me a few seconds to recover before I hurled myself at the red-haired dude and both of us fell to the floor. At that moment, he took out a knife from his pocket and before I could stop him, he sliced my arm with the knife.

“Argh!”

Pain lanced through my arm as blood oozed out from the wound. Seeing his advantage, the red haired guy threw me off him and lifted me off the ground. I was honestly surprised that he was strong enough to lift me. He held me against the wall with one hand on my neck and the other hand holding his knife dangerously close to me.

“Looks like you aren’t such a great fighter after all.” The red haired dude smirked.

I returned his smirk, "Looks like someone's won't be having any father's day."

I was just about to knee him in the groin when a shout echoed from somewhere nearby, followed by the sound of footsteps.

“Shit!” The leader cursed, “Someone’s coming!”

The red haired dude released his grip and ran away together with his leader and his other companion. I checked my arm to see how deep the cut was and thankfully, it was not to deep. However, the pain was excruciating.

“Are you alright?” A female voice asked worriedly.

I looked up and saw the same lady I saw in Valley High this morning – Slim figure, slightly wavy, blonde hair with bluish-gray coloured eyes.

“You’re bleeding!” She gasped in shock.

She took out a handkerchief from her bag and kneeled down. She began to gently dap the corner of my lips which was stained with blood. I pushed her hand away, “Thanks but I don’t need your help.”

The lady noticed the wound on my arm and grabbed my wrist, she carefully examined the cut. “It’s a pretty bad cut, you should go to the hospital to have it treated.” She suggested.

I pulled my arm back and winced in pain due to the sudden movement. “Ugh. It’s none of your business. Go home.” I replied, brushing her off as I stood up.

“What were you doing with those guys anyway?” The lady asked curiously. She sure do like to poke her nose in people’s business.

“It’s none of your business. Besides, what’s a girl like you doing here at this hour? It’s not safe.” I scoffed, walking away.

“I’m not a girl, I’m older than you and I’m an adult!” She rolled her eyes and corrected. “Besides, what’s a teenager like you doing here at this hour? It’s not safe.” She challenged.

I rolled my eyes and continued to walk away from her. "You sure don't look like an adult."

This reminds me, who is she anyway?
