the ferris wheel we used to visit
standing in an empty field
now rusted,
the mint-green paint
chipping off of the metal

it's left lonely
just like i was
when you left me

the train ride to get here
was long and uneventful
the rain pattered on my window
as i listened to music—
our music

now the rain is pouring
my clothes are soaked
and my hair is dripping wet
and i can't see through my glasses
but i still stand there
staring at the lonely ferris wheel

i don't know when it happened,
maybe it was at the same time
you stepped foot on that plane
after speaking to me the night before
on the phone
as if everything was okay

or maybe it was when
you called a month after you left
and told me how you were sorry you never told me
but it was already too late
and the damage was already done

i found out
that it happened last month
after a year of not talking to you
and the last message you sent was on my birthday—
you never sent me one that day

you had slowly drifted
from my mind
and i think the fair knew
that time had ran out
as it did between us
