~*~

It was your 3 year anniversary as a couple. May 14th. L never once forgot the date, and he always tried hard to make each one more special than the last. Tonight, It was a cool early summer night underneath the dim glow of the city, and by your standards, the evening was completely perfect. Despite Kira still being on the loose, and the stress it was putting on both of you, you managed to completely enjoy yourselves on your special night out together. Anniversaries were special after all, and you supposed a one night break would do you both some good.

You walk silently hand in hand in a beautiful park that was lit by the moonlight and the distant city, and you squeeze L's palm in yours as you smile a little. Words couldn't even begin to describe how much you loved him. Before you were about to express that, Your thoughts are stopped abruptly as L stops walking, and you look up to see you were right on the same bridge where you first met each other, and he brings you over to the edge of the beautiful iron railing as he delicately kisses your cheek.

"(y/n), I have something to give to you."

He says as he snuggles you from behind, keeping his hands on yours.

"I thought I told you there were no gifts."

You laugh as you feel him shift closer.

"Oh shush you. Plus, it's more of a sentimental thing. For both of us."

He mumbles as he goes in his back pocket, soon pulling a small golden lock out, along with a small key. It had both your initials carved into it with a small heart around that, and you smile as you look up to him.

"These are exceedingly popular in France. I saw it online, and it gave me an idea. You lock it in the place where you fell in love, and you throw away the key to signify your permanent adoration for each other."

He says as he puts it in your hands, and then places his hands around yours.

"That's so sweet of you."

You say as you turn towards him, giving him a small kiss before you turn back around.

"Well, would you like to do the honours?"

He asks once you break apart, and you smile in response.

"Together."

You state as you squeeze his hands in yours, and he lets out a small hum of happiness as a response. You then turn around while you still were in his arms, and you find a good spot before you loop the golden lock around one of the iron curls, and you both click it into place after you whisper count to three. L then takes the small gold key that went along with it, and he tosses it into the river below as he kisses you on your lips.

"I love you, (y/n)."

He whispers once you disconnect, and you feel him part your hair to one side as he looks at you as if you were the entire universe.

"I love you too."

You whisper as you join your hands together.

"I have another gift for you by the way, and an important question to ask."

He says, and you look up at him as he seemed to grow nervous. He then takes a deep breath, and shifts you closer before speaking.

"(y/n), over the years we've been together, I realize that I love you more than anything in the entire world. Everything about you is incredible, and you're the love of my life. And....Well, I've been thinking lately...And... I-I want to spend the rest of my life with you."

He says, causing you to gasp while he takes your hands.

"Y-You're smart, you're beautiful, and...I want you to be my wife."

He says before he pulls out a small black box from his pocket, popping it open to show an absolutely beautiful engagement ring.

"So (y/n) (l/n)...Will you marry me?"

He continues as his hands slightly tremble from him being nervous, and you look up towards him as you feel tears building up in your eyes.

"Of course! One hundred million times yes!"

You say as you wrap your arms around him, and he lightly spins you around as he accepts the embrace. After you finish with that, he gingery slips the ring on your finger, and it fit perfectly.

"I love you (y/n)...My beautiful fiancée."

He says as he kisses your lips, and you feel nothing but pure joy to see that the man of your dreams would become your husband. And for that moment...everything was perfect.

But then that moment ended.

Your kiss was broken by a sharp pain in your chest, and you immediately clutch your heart as you let out an exasperated gasp.

"(y-y/n)? What's wrong darling?"

L asks as he softly grips your shoulders, and you hear the slight panic raising in his tone. You didn't answer. Rather, you actually collapse in his arms as you continue clutching your chest.

"Oh god, please not this... (y-y/n) please stay with me, S-SOMEBODY, CALL AN AMBULANCE!"

He yells as he kneels down with you, shakily parting your hair to one side as you feel drops of warm water splashing against your cheeks.

"(y-y/n), please don't leave me..."

You hear him shakily say, but you both knew well what just happened. It was most certainly Kira. The world knew you were a couple, and despite how much covering L and Watari did on your identity over the past few years...If someone was dedicated enough they may have found something. Not that you were that huge of a risk to Kira anyway, but he probably wanted to pick you off just to see what L would do. If he couldn't kill L, he would kill you to ease his frustration, and maybe make L give up the fight.

You think of this as you feel yourself fading, and you hear L's voice calling your name become more muffled, soon turning to nothing.

L's point of view:

"(y/n)! (y/n), please wake up!"

I yell as I feel hot water rolling down my cheeks, and she doesn't respond. Thinking the absolute worst, I place my fingers on her neck as I frantically check for a pulse. Miraculously, I find one. It was weak, but she was still alive. I keep on holding her close whispering how much I loved her and telling her to stay until the ambulance finally arrives, immediately catching my attention. The paramedics then rush over with a stretcher along with plenty of medical gear, and they begin checking her condition. I give them her name and everything they wanted, still feeling completely and utterly distraught, and they bring her into the ambulance and I insist on coming along with.

...It was days and she hadn't gotten better. I spent all day at the hospital just holding her hand, praying that the heart monitor wouldn't stop. If the heart attack was from Kira, then she was gone already. I just had to hope to god that it wasn't. I just got engaged to the love of my life.

Why this - of all things...Kira had no reason. As I keep her hand in mine, I look down at the ring I gave her not long ago. I was finally happy, and the one thing I loved more than anything had to be torn away from me as soon as I solidified her as a permanent part of my life.

"Come on (y/n)...Wake up for me, please."

I tell her as I squeeze her hand, and I rub my eyes with my free one. They were tired and sore. I haven't slept since this mess began. I haven't been eating either. I was too worried that she woul-

My thoughts are cut short by the sound of a flatline. After few minutes of pure shock mixed with waves of sadness, I stand up as her hand slips limply from mine. I couldn't believe it. I didn't want to believe it. My fiancée of only a few days...Gone. After just standing there, I finally part some of her hair to the side as I shakily give her a small and final kiss on her forehead.

I then slip the ring off her finger after I back away, and I caress her cheek as I feel warm water pooling in my eyes.

"I suppose this is goodbye (y/n). I'll see you again in a little while ok sweetheart? Just please wait for a few years."

I say as I get up, wiping my eyes before I bring the sheet over her.

"I love you....so much."

I manage to stammer before I turn, walking away from what used to be my entire universe.

The sound of the machine signifying her death rings in my head as I exit the hospital and begin walking home, feeling more shocked and stunned than anything. I suppose the pure grief hadn't hit me yet. But then I start thinking. I suppose the most painful part of this is I would never be able to see her again. I would never see her smile, or hear her laugh. I would never be able to touch her warm skin, kiss her soft lips, or look into her beautiful eyes and hear her voice. I couldn't ever wake up again to see her sound asleep next to me, or be able to do something as simple as holding hands.

...We would never be able to build our life together. We could never start a family or fall in love with each other all over again. We couldn't do any of those things. none of that could become a reality anymore. Because of Kira.

And that, I cannot forgive.

My thoughts linger as I open the door to our apartment, which was now suddenly dull. The colour had gone away from it, and it held a heavy silence. No 'welcome home' echoing from down the hall, no kisses or hugs to make the day seem less stressful. And most importantly...No (y/n).

~*~a few hours later~*~

I look around the apartment when I start to develop a headache from dealing with my grief all night, my phone on silent but displaying 6 missed calls from Watari. There were some things that were here that (y/n) left that I hadn't touched yet. I didn't ever want to touch them. Like the cup she left in the kitchen from before our date. I almost felt as if she was still here if I kept all the things she left the exact same way. I think of this as I blankly stare at her small lipstick stain on the rim of the mug, wishing she was still with me. We would've come home from our date like lovesick teens, probably to wind up watching cheesy movies or just having an all around beautiful evening.

I think of this as I pull my computer out, checking to see if there was anything about her in the news, knowing that despite how crushed I was work had to continue. But I immediately notice my inbox had something in it. It was from headquarters, and was only labeled: Kira sent you a message.

"A personal message from Kira to me...?"

I mumble as I open the folder, and double click a video file. Inside was a video with just a black screen.

"Good evening L. If you're hearing this it means that your little girlfriend is dead. Poor thing. She didn't even really deserve it."

I hear a sick laugh as I clench my fists. She didn't. Not at all.

"Anyway...If I'm honest with you, I did this to watch you suffer. To have a little fun. Hopefully this might make you give up, because take it as a warning. I killed her without hesitation and I will kill you as well. But be careful L...I don't want to make this fun little game of ours shorter than what it should be."

The recording stops as I feel rage seething inside me mixed with complete sorrow and a sick feeling of guilt. (y/n) didn't have to die. She shouldn't have died. It was only because Kira was bored.

"Kira...You will suffer in a world of pain for what you have done..."

I stammer as I feel my body shaking with the mixed emotions, trying not to blame myself.

During next week at work, I was working harder than before, to the bone if I had to. Kira will be caught. I don't care one bit about treading carefully anymore. I think of this as I pull up a few new articles, scanning them at lightning speed just to see if I could find something, anything that could convict someone of the crimes.

~*~Light's point of view~*~

He looked absolutely awful. I almost feel bad, but most of me doesn't care. If L was this weakened by my move, then I was happy. I didn't give a damn who I killed. I admit it though, (y/n) was the one person who I thought twice about. But seeing L in this much pain was something I didn't want to just pass up.

I watch as he exhaustedly rubs his slightly red eyes and pushes the untouched cake in front of him away, taking shaky deep breaths as he cups his head in both of his hands. He was reading an article about (y/n)'s death to look for any leads. It was labeled as accidental. I could tell he was furious - I mean, it definitely was no accident.

"Riyuzaki...We all miss her. Maybe at this point we should just give it up. Who knows who's going to be next..if you're not careful it might be you."

I say, trying hard not to laugh or smile.

"I DON'T CARE IF I'M NEXT! I-if I am...I...I would be able to see (y/n) again sooner..."

He says, causing me to almost uncontrollably smile. So he was that depressed about it. He almost wanted to die.

"E-excuse me, please."

He stammers, his voice breaking as he gets up, covering his face with one hand before he quickly staggers to another room.

"Man...poor L..."

I hear one of the task force members say as they shift a bit, clearly feeling for the detective that was so stoic up until now.

"I know. We're all mourning her loss."

I answer as I try and seem sympathetic.

"For him it was different. You see, he had just proposed to (y/n) mere moments before she had the fatal heart attack."

Watari says as he walks over, picking the completely untouched cake piece up and putting it back on a nearby tray.

"He hasn't been taking care of himself lately as a result. He's stopped eating and won't sleep, and he's extremely depressed and upset right now. (y/n) was the love of his life, and she got taken away from him right as he was going to make her officially his. Now I think he feels he doesn't have anyone left to be by his side."

He says as he shakes his head, and the whole room held a heavy silence afterwards, before Watari glances to the door L went through.

"My best guess for why he's so destroyed is that she had a spotless record. Not even a parking ticket. Her death was unjustified, and it was labeled accidental because she wasn't seen as someone who would be a victim of Kira, only adding insult to her memory. The only reason that she was killed is Kira wanted to see L suffer. But in way...I believe L almost sees it as his own fault. I do worry about him now. He really did love her more than anything, and...I'm unsure of what extent he'll go to to be able to see her once again. I've been keeping a close eye on him, and I ask you please understand if he isn't himself."

Now this....This was absolutely priceless. Not only were they together...They were going to get married. If this won't make L weak I don't know what will. I'm close to winning. If I can just fulfill his desire to 'see (y/n)' very soon, Kira will rule the world. Justice...No, God will rule.

~*~end of POV ~> third person~*~

Light thinks about this as he pretends to be sympathetic, but man, killing off L's fiancée was probably the worst mistake he had made as Kira.

Because for L it wasn't about reason anymore. It was pure emotion and grief driving him. As soon as (y/n) was given her funeral, he immediately convicted Light as being Kira, and Misa for being the second. Because of one thing that only slightly tipped him off.

Light smirked for a split second at her burial.

And he was right. As soon as they were both put away, the killings stopped like magic, and the entire world celebrated. Except for L. In fact if you were still alive, he would be celebrating something different on the very same day.

It would have been your wedding day.

He thinks of this as he stares at the news, seeing on all the broadcasts that L had won the battle with Kira. It made him feel awful. He knew all along, really. He thought he could've saved you. If only he were faster. But...Because of your death, Light was caught.

That night, he went to bed early. There was one of your old sweaters entangled in with the plain off white sheets, and he lies down next to it as he brings the worn piece of fabric up to his face. It still carried your scent on it, according to L it was the smell of peaches and strawberries, with a tinge of shampoo and laundry detergent mixed in with it. It helped him sleep, and also to get his mind off of the fact that you were gone.

~*~L's point of view~*~

I lay there unmoving with (y/n)'s sweater tightly in my arms. It had been a few long months since she departed from this world, and the wound hadn't healed. Not one bit. I let my thoughts go blank other than than just thinking about the love of my life, and I think I hear something, causing me to open my eyes again. It was...her. Sitting on the edge of our bed, facing away.

"(Y-y/n)...?"

I stammer as I sit upward, and she turns and smiles at me in response. Her beautiful smile which I missed seeing so much.

"Is it...really you?"

I stammer as I hold my hand towards her, and she lifts her legs onto the mattress as she shifts closer to me.

"Yes sweetheart."

She says in her beautiful soft melody of a voice, and I instantly scramble closer as I feel tears in my eyes. She was glowing. From both being absolutely radiant, and also from being...Literally radiant. She had a gorgeous golden aura around her, which made her absolutely stunning.

"(y/n)...are you...Am I...Dreaming?"

I stammer as I see her look towards me.

"In a sense. I'm not actually physically here. See?"

She says as she holds her hand up, and I slowly touch mine to hers. It went straight through. But she was warm still. Touching her felt like the sensation of the warm sun on a summer day.

"(y/n)... I miss you so much. What I wouldn't give just to wrap my arms around you."

I manage to stammer after a small silence as I feel my voice breaking, and she just stays quiet for awhile before she looks back towards me, and she shifts a little before speaking.

"I miss you too. So much."

She says as she traces her warm hand across my cheek, a tingling feeling accompanying the sensation.

"You know...W-we can be together again sooner if you would like. I can..."

I say as I look up towards her, and she seems almost confused for a second until a look of shock mixed with horror runs across her face.

"Don't say that! Don't you ever even think to suggest that again! Lawliet, if you dare hurt yourself because of me then I would never forgive you, understand? Not ever!"

She snaps, causing me to almost lose my composure.

"B-but I love you. I want to see you. What should I do? I...I just want to come home (y/n)...I feel lost without you."

I say, my voice wavering.

"I know you do....But You need to go on without me. I'm here, just in ways you won't see."

She answers, now with softness back in her tone as she slips her hand on top of mine.

"Please...live your life. Eat well, get your rest...And still be the L I knew while I was there."

She continues as she runs her hand down my arm.

"N-no...please don't leave me alone..."

I stammer as I feel her warm hand slipping away from mine, making her stop.

"I can't stay Lawliet. You know that."

She whispers as she looks at me with her beautiful (e/c) eyes.

"Just for a little longer..."

I sniff, and she inches closer again as she shakes her head.

"I'm sorry my love...but someday I'll come visit you again. I promise."

She says as she gives me a
