A/N: didn't really know how to title it differently, but this is less pregnant reader and more focused on the day your child is born.

~♡~L's POV~♡~

HQ was particularly boring today. Nothing new in the Kira case, nothing interesting to talk about, and nothing to do other than sit here and do pretty much nothing.

It was slow, painfully slow. Time was seemingly at a pause, and I absentmindedly prod at the strawberry on top of my cake slice before sighing deeply, resting my forehead on the desk.

"Ryuzaki, why dont we just call it quits for the day. Nothings happenin-"

Light begins, but was interrupted mid sentence by my phone suddenly ringing, almost making everyone in the room jump from the sudden noise. Pulling it out of my back pocket, I look at the caller ID before tilting my head, seeing it wasn't one I recognized, or had a contact for. Funny...This number shouldn't be accessible by anyone but the seldom few I gave it to.

Curious, I answer it, hoping that if anything, it would take my mind off the boredom of the day.

"Yes?"

"Hello, is this Ryuzaki?"

An unfamiliar voice asks, and I pause.

"How did you access this phone number?"

I immediately ask back while Light looks over, and I hear some voices on the other line before they speak again.

"I'm calling on behalf of your wife Mrs. (l/n) and the regional hospital. I must inform you that she is currently in our care."

They say calmly, and I sit up as my full attention is grabbed, my stomach twisting into a knot while I almost knock my coffee off the table.

"What? Why!? What happened, there wasn't an accident was there?!"

I immediately shoot out while everyone in the room looks over with an expression of surprise while I get up, quickly getting to another room before anyone can hear more of this particular conversation.

"No. Thankfully she's completely fine and safe. But you see...You're her emergency contact, and she's gone into labor."

They say, and I feel my heart stop while I close the door behind me in a small printer room.

"W-what? She's what?!"

I ask quickly, minding my volume before running my hand up through my hair. Of course I knew she was due soon, but now? Now?!

"She's in labor. Currently she's scheduled for delivery as soon as possible, as soon as both she and the delivery room are ready."

I hear the calm voice respond, and in the background of the call I hear reassurance that everything is going to be fine, with someone who I could only assume to be (y/n) taking rapid deep breaths as well.

"A-alright. Thank you. I'll be there as soon as I possibly can. Please let me know if anything happens."

I say, oddly calmly for how much I was internally panicking. After hanging up, I snap my phone closed, getting out of the printer room and immediately making my way toward the exit as Watari holds the door open, knowing exactly what was happening based on the little amount he had heard from the phone call.

"I need to get to the hospital as quickly as possible."

"Of course."

He answers while I continue on, not wanting to waste a second more.

"W-wait! Ryuzaki, what's going on? Who's going to the hospital?"

Light asks, and I stop for a second before looking back only slightly before I leave.

"That's none of your concern, Light. Now please, I have to go because it's incredibly urgent. You all can continue working or feel free to head home early. I may be gone for awhile."

I say, and leave without another word.

~♡~Your POV~♡~

"We're almost ready to bring you in, hold on until then okay?"

You hear the attendant say, while you try and take deep breaths.

"Is...Is L..."

"Yes, we just spoke to him. Your husband is currently on the way, and he'll be here for you soon. By the end of today you'll have a brand new family member, so try and focus on that for now."

She continues calmly, and you nod while you couldn't focus on much than the pain. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, you were taken to the delivery room while a blur of doctors and nurses prep for welcoming your newborn into the world.

Not long at all after one of the midwives starts coaching you through the labor, you feel a gentle and slender hand take yours, holding it tight.

"I'm here for you (y/n). You're doing great, just hang in there okay?"

L's gentle voice says calmly, while you try and take deep breaths.

"Easy for you to say....You did this to me."

You mumble, strained while you squeeze his palm. A strenuous three hour labour later while your focus tunneled into getting this kid out of you, you finally hear your newborn cry out.

"Finally."

You sigh, letting your head fall back as you try to relax despite the pain, your breath heavy while your grip on L's hand softened at last. Recovering a little, you smile softly and exhaustedly before hearing the doctor announce that you had a boy.

"A boy."

You weakly say, glancing up at L as you press your lips on his hand.

...Despite the surgical mask that the hospital required he put on in the delivery room, he looked like he was going to pass out.

"You can go wait in the postpartum room we have prepared, if you would like."

A nurse tells your husband, clearly taking notice of his paler than usual complexion and stunned face.

"W-Would that be alright?"

He asks you in a stutter, and you nod softly, managing to kiss his hand again. You knew that he had never been in a situation even close to this before, and everything was becoming a bit too much for him - hence the stutter - which in and of itself was extremely rare coming from the normally cool and collected detective.

Knowing he needed a second or two alone to process everything that was happening, and the fact that you had a baby now, you smile while giving him a reassuring glance.

"Of course. We'll catch up with you soon."

You sigh, allowing his hand to slip away from yours. Not long after you had your skin-to-skin contact and the doctor made sure your son was adjusting well, they take him to be cleaned, weighed, and checked for anything that would indicate problems. During this, you were moved to the separate hospital room to recover, where L was waiting.

As soon as you were helped into the recovery bed and the attendant left, he dragged a chair over to be as close as possible to you, and kept a hand on yours while you waited for your son to be returned to you. It was silent, and you knew that his stoic demeanor hid a storm of nervousness.

"Have you thought of any names?"

You ask, breaking the silence and trying to draw his mind elsewhere while L presses his thumb to his lower lip, spending a moment in thought.

"I'm surprised we never discussed one previously."

He mumbles, glancing over with two dark eyes hidden underneath tresses of black hair.

"Well...Have you thought of aliases?"

"Of course."

He answers almost immediately, causing you to laugh weakly.

"Well, what's of them you like most?"

"...(s/n)."

He answers, sliding his gaze back toward his feet. You spend a moment thinking about it, and smile as you decided you liked that name too.

"I like it."

You finally say, and L looks over with a slight expression of surprise.

"Really?"

"Really."

You answer, gently squeezing his hand while you close your eyes.

"I'm exhausted."

You sigh, relaxing into the crisp and slightly flat pillows of the hospital bed.

"I'm sure you are. I wish I could do more to help."

"Just you being here is enough."

You say quietly, rubbing your thumb on the side of his palm lovingly, and you knew you earned at least a weak smile, even though your eyes weren't open to see it.

It was a little while before a nurse finally came back with (s/n), but as soon as she did you and L both perked up instantly.

"Completely healthy."

She smiles, handing the small swaddled up bundle over to you as soon as you shift upward enough to hold him.

"I'll give you both some time to relax. You should be fine to go home today if you're feeling up to it, but let us know when you're ready and we'll bring a wheelchair over to get you to your drive home. Over the next 24 hours its best if you avoid walking too much, but you should be able to manage short distances."

She says, and you hum a yes while you gently and lovingly take hold of your baby, allowing a tiny hand to wrap around your finger while you kiss his little forehead, just glad to have him in your arms again at last. L's dark eyes watched you intently as you shift slightly, holding your new son close before drawing your eyes back up toward him, gently motioning for him to get closer.

Hesitantly, he does so. Standing and leaning over you both while he bit his thumbnail rather nervously, his mind was obviously completely blank while he looked at you and (s/n). Reaching out a slender hand gently, he stops himself before his fingers made contact with the pale blue blanket that your baby was wrapped in, clearly hesitant as he pulled his reach backward.

"It's okay. Here,"

You gently say in a voice only just above a whisper, and he glances up at you for a moment before you softly hold the baby out to him.

"...I don't think that's wise.."

He says after a few moments of hesitation, and you can't help but notice a bit of fear in his normally stoic gaze - something that was not common at all. Laughing shortly, you give him a reassuring glance before shifting upward.

"Just like this. See?"

You smile, demonstrating where your hands were. He nods once as he focuses intently on how you were holding the tiny child, and you smile gently once he glances up to you - almost as if he was looking for approval. Slowly, he brings his arms out and gently takes hold of the baby, soon after settling into pressing him on his chest protectively. He shouldn't have been so nervous. He was a natural at it.

~♡~L's POV~♡~

The whole world seemed to slow to a a stand-still as I held (s/n) in my arms. Realizing slowly that he was real....Not to mention the fact I was a father now, I feel my chest lock up while I stared at the baby that (y/n) and I had brought into the world.

And before I even realized it, I had fallen completely in love with him.

Is this how he felt...?

I think, wondering about when Soricho Yagami held an infant Light for the first time. Did he feel the same unconditional and almost explosive love that I was now? He must have. Looking down at (s/n), I allow thoughts to begin swimming through my mind, wondering what kind of person he would grow up to be.

Was there a possibility that he might follow a similar path Light did...? It made my stomach turn to think about it, and I shudder slightly as I picture us in the same position as Light's family - how (y/n)'s eyes would be full of tears as our son was sentenced to life in prison for horrendous crimes.

I suddenly fully understood why his father is in such an adamant denial.

'But what if I fail him as a father somehow? What if I can't be there for him or (y/n)? What if-..."

Before I allow my thought process to divulge further into the toxic whirlpool of 'what ifs', I take a breath as I come to the conclusion that it was completely unnecessary to start thinking that way - as none of it would become a reality.

I wouldn't let it.

"L?"

I hear while I immediately pull my gaze back upward, snapping back into reality.

"You okay?"

(y/n) asks, and I nod quickly as I turn my attention back to our new family member, slowly stepping up onto the chair next to (y/n)'s hospital bed and settling into it, allowing (s/n)'s tiny hand to take hold of one of my fingers.

"It's just....You're crying."

She says, and feel quite surprised before I quickly bring a hand up to my cheek, feeling a wetness on it.

So I was.

"I'm alright."

I answer quickly, wiping my face with my shirt sleeves before returning my hand on the baby's back.

"I'm just thinking a lot."

"Sounds like you."

She answers quickly, before she reaches over - slightly strained before allowing her hand to rest gently on mine.

"I bet he's going to look a lot like you."

She smiles, looking at both me and our baby with nothing but love in her eyes.

"Hard to tell right now. I mean, right now he kind of looks like a potato?"

She continues, and I allow myself to laugh shortly, rubbing my thumb on her hand.

"Well, he's our potato."

I answer, and she giggles softly before wincing in pain a little. Before I can say any more, we both hear a short knock, causing us to look up.

"Yes, come in."

I answer, looking down and adjusting the blanket (s/n) was wrapped in with a single index finger and thumb, not really wanting to turn my attention anywhere else.

When I finally look up, I see Watari there, clearly here to say hello to...I suppose his new grandson, as well as to provide a way home for both him and (y/n).

...And a drive back to headquarters for me, most likely.

"I hear everything went smoothly. How are you feeling?"

He smiles, looking at (y/n) while she sighs.

"Glad to have that thing out of me, in all honesty. I'm exhausted... But I couldn't be happier."

She replies, smiling as she looks at me, then our son.

~♡~Your POV~♡~

"Well, I'm glad that L and I were able to make it here in time. I don't think I've ever seen him in such a hurry to get anywhere. I had to double back to get this."

Watari chuckles, while he holds up a gift bag and sets it onto the table next to you.

"Oh, thank you. You know you didn't have to."

You smile, shifting upward a little bit and looking at the simple white paper bag, tied with a black ribbon.

"It's the least I can do."

He says kindly, and you nod, figuring you would wait until you were home to open it.

"Congratulations to both of you."

He continues while smiling lightly, and L returns the gesture before looking back down to the baby.

"His name is going to be (s/n)."

He states, his nervous tone quickly dissolving into a genuine excitement and happiness while he gets up, allowing Watari to properly see your new addition to the family.

"He picked it out."

You smile, feeling the love growing in the room and in L by the second while he held his son in his slender arms.

"I truly am happy for you, and I'm glad you're both healthy. However, L, I hope you understand we must get back to headquarters soon. It would be unwise to arouse unnecessary suspicion as to why you've been at the hospital so long."

Watari explains, clearly not keen on having to break this news while you see L deflate a little, clearly getting pulled back to reality.

"Right."

He states simply, his smile gone, as was yours.

"(y/n), have you and L planned where you will be staying? No matter where you decide to go I will personally ensure both you and (s/n) are safe and taken care of."

"I can't let them go home without me.."

L immediately says, before glancing down to your son and gently adjusting the little grey hat the hospital put on him, his normally stoic gaze softening for a moment.

"It's alright...You have work to do."

You say with a small smile, and he shakes his head. Tracing his eyes back to you before answering, he steps over and allows you to take hold of your baby again.

"I'm not going to let you be on your own when we just had our first child....What we can do is I'll reserve the entire top floor of the task force building for you two, and you can stay at least until you're fully recovered from the delivery. Is that okay?"

He suggests while he places his hands in his pockets, and you shift uncomfortably, not exactly keen on staying in the Kira investigation headquarters with your newborn son. L immediately notices your unease, and sighs while he takes your hand, kissing your knuckles gently.

"Don't worry. I'm going to do absolutely everything I can to keep you both safe. Your every need will be tended to and I'll make sure to come upstairs every night to spend some time with you and (s/n). Besides...There's cameras, so I can see you and make sure you're alright...And the Task Force building is closer to the hospital in case anything happens."

L reasons quickly, and you sigh as you give in - knowing he would stay true to his word....Plus, having him able to spend time with the two of you every night was an offer that was hard to pass up.

"Nobody working on the case will know that you're even there. Except Watari of course, who will bring you absolutely anything you need if I am unable to. I'll even get a nurse on call for you."

L suggests, and you look up to Watari, who smiles only slightly and respectfully bows.

"You have my word. Despite being the investigation headquarters, L has made sure it is ready for both yours and (s/n)'s arrival."

He states, and you manage to smile a little, even though you still felt quite nervous. Knowing L though, he probably took every precaution to keep you safe.

It was another hour or so until you felt well enough to move (thanks to good old Vicoden), but L paitently waited for you the entire time, not rushing you in the slightest. As soon as you give the okay however, you knew you would have to go rather quickly - as you knew L was already gone from work quite a while.

It was sort of a blur as you made your way there, but before you even knew it, you were through security of a private back entrance to the building.

Finally stopping before a discreet looking elevator, L taps a code onto a number pad before the doors slide open.

"I can take her upstairs. Watari, please tell everyone at the interface that I'll be back shortly. Just getting cake or something."

L asks, and Watari bows before looking to you quickly.

"You have my contact if you need anything while L is at the inteface."

He says, and you smile softly and nod once, before the doors close.

"I had no idea there was a private back entrance to this place."

"Of course. I thought of adding this before the building was even constructed. You were 2 months along at the time you know."

He smoothly says, punching yet another code to even access the top floor.

"I told you not to worry."

He says calmly, placing his hands in his pockets while the elevator starts moving upward. When the doors finally open, it reveals a small entryway to a rather large penthouse apartment, with everything you could ever need already waiting for you, including a nursery.

"Go and sit down, darling."

He softly says, and you certainly didn't need to be told twice - smiling lightly at the term of endearment he had used. Once you do and set down the baby carrier close by, L comes over with an entire cake and a bowl of candy, setting them down in front of you.

"In case you get hungry. If you would like something different go ahead and ask Watari, I'm sure he would like an excuse to come see (s/n)."

He says, pulling the coffee table closer to you and finding a TV remote, as well as bringing over a water bottle before he spends a moment in thought.

"Is there anything you need before I go? Anything at all."

He asks, his monotone voice showing a layer of softness that he
