It was pouring in the city tonight. Absolute torrential rain. Of course, this was the night you and L decided to go out for dinner since it was clear before you went, and you didn't have a way home other than walking.

L didnt care one bit, because he actually liked being out in the rain, but you were not in the mood to get soaked and freezing cold to end your nice night together.

"Are you ready to go (y/n)?"

He asks, snapping you from thought as he puts your jacket over your shoulders, and takes your hand.

"Yea. I guess...I cant say I'm looking forward to walking in that downpour though..."

You grumble, and L laughs very lightly before you walk to the door.

"Think of it this way - it will be really nice when we get home and dry off."

He says, and you sigh, knowing you didnt have much of a choice other than to essentially swim home.

"Yea..Let's just go then.."

You sigh, and you both walk out as the rain hits you like a waterfall. Pressing on, you feel your hair beginning to get wet while you begin to walk. Only 15 minuets, and you would be home.

"I can feel it getting into my jacket..."

You groan, only about two minuets into your walk while the rain continues to relentlessly pour.

"And my shoes.."

You say, knowing there was no use to try and protect yourself from the downpour. While you kept moving along just wishing you were back inside, you pass an alleyway right as you hear soft mewing among the thundering raindrops, like a small animal was there.

"Do you hear that?"

You ask, and L stops.

"Hear what?"

He questions, and you slip your hand from his while you walk into the alleyway.

"(y/n), where are you going?"

He asks, and you dont answer immediately. Rather, you slowly approach a box in the alley, hearing weak noises coming from within. Opening it, you gasp as you see two small kittens, wet and freezing cold.

"L, there are two kittens here."

You say, covering your mouth as you feel like you were going to cry.

"What?"

He asks, coming over to look.

"C-Can we take them? They'll die out here if they stay. Look at them, they're soaked..."

You ask, reaching into the box and pulling the two small creatures to your chest. L wasnt one to ever want pets, especially not two, and he shifts a little while he looks at the kittens.

"We can definetly get them out of the cold and take them in for now... but (y/n), I dont know if we should keep them."

He mumbles, and you get a little sad while you put the two into your jacket, at least getting them out of the rain.

"Well.. for now let's try and get a bit of cat food and get them home with us so they can dry off."

You say, and both walk out of the alley as you try and keep as much rain as you could out of your jacket. On the way home, you stop at a small convenience store, buying a few cans of cat food before trying to head home a bit faster than you normally would, feeling the small cats moving slightly against your chest. You just had to hope they were going to be okay.

Finally, once you get back to the main building, you relax slightly before walking into the main floor, glad you were out of that waterfall outside.

"Whoa, you two are soaked!"

Light says when he sees you and L walk in, and you nod while you immediately start heading upstairs.

"Yea. It's a downpour out there. I feel awful in these clothes, so we're gunna go change. We also found two kittens out in the cold, so we wont be down again until tomorrow."

"Oh my gosh! Can we see?"

Misa coos as she skips over, and you shift a bit.

"Not right now. I need to get them fed and dry. But later if they're healthy enough, sure."

You say as you walk upstairs without wasting time, tracking water the whole way. L follows, and immediately when you get to your floor, you pull out a fluffy towel and place it into a cardboard box, and set up a space heater near it. Gently putting the freezing and wet kittens in the towel, you turn the heater up while they curl up. Hopefully they'll get more energy when they're dry and have had some food.

"L honey, could you keep an eye on them while I go get a change of clothes?"

You ask, and he agrees before you turn towards your bedroom, taking all your soaked clothes off and throwing them in the dryer before changing into some comfortable pyjamas. Quickly grabbing the shopping bag off the counter without wasting time, you spoon some wet food into a small dish, adding a little warm water to it as well.

Walking over, you put the dish into the box, and the kittens slowly get up and walk over, hungrily starting to eat. They were so small, and it broke your heart to think about how long they were out in the cold.

"Poor things..."

You sigh, and look over to L before telling him he should probably go change clothes as well. Not long after he comes back in a pair of grey sweats and another white shirt, and crouches by the box again while the cats begin to move a bit more, taking in thier new surroundings.

"They seem to be getting some strength back."

He says, and you smile softly.

"Yea, it's good. I was really worried about them. I'm gunna go make some tea for us, okay? Stay here though."

You say, getting up while L continues to watch the kittens intently, reaching down to softly pet one.

When you get back with your tea and a few cookies, you see L holding one of the little kittens while the other was in his lap, scratching its ears and gently drying them off more.

"They certainly are cute."

He says, while they softly meow and begin getting more energetic. You could tell he was cracking slightly, and his words earlier about not wanting to keep them were losing significance fast.

"Yes, they are."

You answer, before you put the tea down and lean into him.

"Here, I think they're dry enough to come out of the towel. Why dont we bring them to the living room and play with them a little?"

You smile, and L agrees before you gently pick one up, and it responds by purring and licking your hand.

"Awe.."

You say, and it softly mews at you before you put it down by the fireplace, soon after finding a feather stuck to one of the pillows on the couch before you toss it up in the air while both kittens jump and play with it and each other. Looking over to L, he watches while he looks a little sad, and you inch over before resting your head on his shoulder.

"What's wrong sugar?"

You playfully ask as you kiss his cheek, and he sighs while he looks at the kittens.

"I think I want to keep them."

He says, and you look over, slightly surprised.

"Really? That was certainly a fast switch."

You say, and he sighs.

"Yes. They've cracked me. I won't want to let go of them anymore... I made the mistake of thinking of a name for one, so now I'm attached."

He laughs slightly, looking to the grey little ball of fur that was playing with the feather on the ground.

"What's the name you gave her?"

You ask, while the other kitten trots up to your legs, winding around them.

"Justice."

He says, and you cant help but laugh.

"Of course, I should have guessed."

You smile, and he does so as well.

"What about the other one?"

You ask, and he thinks for a moment before looking toward you, silently asking what you were thinking. Justice was a soft grey cat with blue eyes, while the other was white with light grey details, and green eyes.

"I always liked the name Mochi."

You laugh, bending down to pet her.

"I like that too. But it'll be obvious who named each one."

He laughs, and you smile, glad you were keeping the kittens that needed a home so badly.

After a few weeks, you had gotten them their shots and everything a kitten needs (and also finding out that Justice was actually a boy, while Mochi was a girl), they became completely your cats. They were absolutely obsessed with both you and L, and they enjoyed roaming around the task force building while you were working. You had even installed a cat door on your apartment, but commonly they would follow you down to the interface, and sit in either yours or L's lap while you worked, sometimes causing mischief like knocking cups or pieces of paper off the desk.

It was really nice that you and L had a few pets now, as it gave you a reason to get home, and made the day much more interesting and fun. It was nice to have something soft sit in your lap, and to have a fun little distraction when you needed it.

L even went so far as to call them the most important task force members, aside from himself. Of course he was kidding... Sort of.
