You Killed Us

I was blessed to have seen my husband when I opened my eyes, but I felt a painful reality hit me.  He's not here as a loving husband.

"God, Kori, I thought I lost you forever." I squeezed my eyes shut and turned my head away.

"I'll get the doctor."  He said, and left the room.

I, unfortunately, remember everything. I remember my husband leaving me, finding out I'm pregnant, Claudia's hurtful words, and finally I remember turning my wheel to miss the tractor-trailer in my car.  I even remember looking down and seeing that I was impaled in the chest with a metal rod.

The pain in my chest is unbearable, but is it because of the accident or because I don't need to hear the words? My baby is gone, there's no way my precious child survived.

"Hello, Mrs. Hardwick.  I'm Dr. Lamert, do you know why you are here?"  I saw Gavin standing next to him.

"Yes, somebody killed my baby,"  I said.

"You were in a car accident, and, yes, you did lose your baby, but it was an accident.  You have my condolences."  He said.

"Just cut to the chase."  Tears escaped my eyes.

"You have an injury to your chest and we are monitoring you closely.  You will make a full recovery because no vital organs were damaged."  He said.

"That's too bad, because I'd rather die and be with my baby, then to face all of this." That's not a lie.

"Kori, you don't mean that." Gavin had the nerve to speak.

"I would like him removed from my room and not allowed back," I said to the doctor and couldn't even look at Gavin.

"This is your husband, Mrs. Hardwick." He said.

"The name is Kori Heart." I corrected him.  "Please, do as I say," I ordered.

"Kori, I love you, and I'm not going anywhere. We need to talk..."

"Get the fuck out!"  I screamed.

"Mr. Hardwick, please do as she says.  Give her some time to process everything, because we don't need her blood pressure rising." The doctor said.

"Kori, I need to be with you, please don't do this to me." He said.

"To you? I haven't done a thing to you.  Go cuddle up with Claudia in our home as you did over the weekend.  I'll be waiting for the annulment papers."

"No! I won't do that, Kori.  We need each other more than ever now."  His voice broke.  If he dares to shed a tear, I'll hop out if this bed, injured or not, and give him a few injuries of his own.

"Go raise someone else's baby with Claudia and leave me alone."  I turned my head away and caught a tear with my finger.

"We can get through this, Kori.  You're the love of my life, and I'll never give you up." He said.

"You don't have a choice.  Doctor, please get security." I squeezed my eyes shut.

"Fine I'll go, but if there is any change in her condition, I expect a phone call immediately." He stormed away.

The doctor showed me my morphine pump, and as soon as Dad entered and held my hand, I fell asleep.  At least with sleep, I don't have to face the pain I feel inside.

My time in the hospital was short, thankfully.  Three days is what I needed and was told I could recover at home. I have no home, so I asked Stella and Chloe to get my clothes from Gavin's house.  That was as much as I was going to ask of anyone else, but Brad gave me the keys to his penthouse and insisted I recover there instead of the hotel room I planned on reserving.

Brad and Chloe waited in my room, while Stella helped me dress in the bathroom to leave the hospital.  She has been with me almost constantly.  So has Chloe and Brad, for the most part.  When we opened the bathroom door, I heard Brad's voice.

"I think it would be best for you to go.  If she wants to talk, I'm sure she will contact you." It didn't take a genius to figure out Gavin had arrived.

"Could you all excuse us so we can talk?" Gavin said.

"No, they won't be leaving and there won't be any talking."  I slowly made my way to lean against my bed.

"Kori, you need to be recovering at home and not in a hotel," he said, because I asked everyone to keep my location a secret.

"You have no say over me.  Guys, if we have everything, we can just go." I said, just before a sweet nurse walked in with a wheelchair.

"Kori, I'm your husband."  He pointed out.

"No, Gavin, a husband doesn't do the things you've done." I sat in the chair and Stella pushed me toward the door, when none other than the woman of the hour walked in with her cute little baby bump.

"Oh, Kori.  I'm glad to see you're doing well.  I'm sorry about your baby."  She rubbed her little baby bump.  "These little guys can be so fragile.  I'm so grateful to have Gavin in his baby's life.  Science is an amazing thing.  Aren't you glad we all know now with the paternity test?"

"Claudia! I told you to meet me in the car!" Gavin yelled, but I heard a thump and looked behind me.  There stood Brad shaking his hand and Gavin is laid out on the floor.

"Is this true? Gavin, is that your baby?"  I asked.

"I wanted to talk to you, and Claudia shouldn't have come up here." He started to get up, but Brad kicked him back down.

"I believed Kori asked you a question.  It's a yes or no answer." Brad snapped.

"Yes, she had a paternity test."

"You brought her here?"  Stella yelled.

Oh my God.  I just lost my baby and he's having one with Claudia.  It was all a lie, every bit.

"Claudia had an appointment." He said.

"Fuck you, Gavin.  Go to hell, and I better never see you even try to get near Kori." Stella yelled at him.

I looked back as a Gavin stood and looked at him one last time with more tears in my eyes.

"You killed my baby for her, so I do believe I deserve that annulment," I said.  "Stella, if you don't start pushing this chair, I'm walking out of here."
