I was left baffled when Amara unexpectedly sprinted out of my room, not paying heed to my calls for her.

Everything had been running smoothly until after Zoe arrived. Her presence generated an unusual awkward aura inside the room.

Not that I blamed Zoe, I had been canceling on her for a long time now and she was left with no choice but to appear unannounced. Though, admittedly, I wanted to spend alone time with Amara, wanted to have a proper conversation with her because I was beginning to enjoy her presence.

Only if we had a chance to converse more, I would have told her that the piglet plush toy she suspected was not given to me by her, actually, belong to her and was the first-ever precious toy of hers she had surrendered to me. Of course, I kept it safe and unscathed with me.

I'd have told her that the stem of rose that had begun to thrive in the pot she had been staring at when I had reentered my room with the food tray was the exact same one she had offered to me as a thank you note on the day we were out to feed homeless. Perhaps it would have reduced differences amongst us, perhaps I would have seen a pure, genuine smile of hers.

Having known her since childhood, I had this inkling she would disturb our study session time and again, however, proving me wrong, she remained attentive all along, which came as a huge surprise to me.

To make sure she paid attention to what I was explaining to her, I discreetly kept glancing at her repeatedly which took me back to the moment when I had tackled her on the sofa for distributing me in my sleep. Being at top of her had stirred something unfamiliar inside of me. Having never been that close to any girl, it certainly should have felt wrong, yet, it didn't.

The sweet, intoxicating whiff of her perfume distracted me multiple times which made it harder for me to focus on tutoring her. But of course, before I could completely lose my senses in her, she drew away my focus from her and the subject by bringing up some nonsensical-ly sensible fact that could surely make one ponder upon.

How could Amara be Amara if doesn't get bored of something quickly? Especially studies. She portrayed herself to be dumb when it came to chemistry, but actually, she was no way near that. She was smarter than anybody could imagine.

I had believed the break we took would help me to take my mind off her, but again, she did not allow me. She brought up Tory.

Tory and her closeness on tracks did not go unnoticed by anyone, including me. They seemed inseparable and more than friendly. Amara may not have noticed it but Tory had purposely talked her into participating in the race because he wanted to go closer to her. He would poke her, tickle her, chase after her, and swirl her in his arms when she beat him in a practice race. They would sit together under a tree after practice to cool off and would spend time laughing at God knows what.

I noticed every single thing.

Whenever I was around, he would wrap his arm around her, making me annoyed and jealous.

Yes, admittedly, I was envious of him. It was not at all new to me since Tory's alliance with her had been bothering me ever since he came into our lives. My disliking towards him was never personal, but it became one when he pulled Amara to himself in middle school and since then, Amara had distanced herself from me because she would hang out with him more. Even though Amara and I had arguments but were together until after Tory arrived.

And from the last few days, merely the mention of her name ignited feelings inside me now. And this was entirely something never happened before.

Like my absentminded decision of wiping the milkshake off her mouth felt so right that I did not want to pull away from her. My heartbeat elevated to concerning a level.

I was in trouble.

That was the first thought that crossed my mind when a desire of kissing her luscious lips surged inside of me. I could feel my body reacting as I gently swept my thumb over her soft, pink lips. My senses had already exploded at the mere thought of kissing her lips, then what would happen if I actually kiss her.

"Ryan!"

I was brutally brought back to the present from my sinful intentions by Zoe, making me look at her in a daze.

"Where did you just go?" She questioned, tilting her head.

To the dreamland where unexpected infatuation for Amara overpowered my senses.

I cleared my throat. "Err, nowhere. Umm, let's continue." I flipped the page of her notebook but before I could write anything on it, she gently placed her hand on it.

"You never mentioned you were going to tutor Amara." Her eyebrows raised in query.

I shrugged. "It slipped off my mind, besides, it wasn't something to be mentioned."

"So, you'll be helping her with chemistry until exams?" Another question came from her.

I shook my head. "No, I'd be done with it way earlier. You do know that she's a quick learner, don't you?"

She nodded her head along with a small smile tugging her lips. "Yeah, I know. And it's quite surprising you permitted her in your room."

I laughed at that. "I did not. She barged in."

"And you did not stop her." She chuckled lightly.

"No, I did not," I whispered, basically, to myself. Though I had run after her to stop her from entering my room, the truth is she couldn't have crossed the threshold of my room if I did not want her to. I wanted to move past that childish phase.

Her soft but uneasy gaze met mine. "Seems like you are getting acquainted with her quite well."

I smiled. "I believe so." I then stood up from the bed. "Let's sit at the desk for better comfort."

Nodding her head, she followed me and positioned herself on the chair on which Amara sat just a while ago. Until I suddenly yawned and I looked at the clock to see the time, we wouldn't have guessed that an hour had passed lost in doing the assignment.

Zoe giggled as she leaned back in the chair. "Looks like you have had enough of studies for the day. First Amara and now me."

Gripping the back of my neck, I massaged it and stated the truth. "Well, I am tired. Studied all night, then Amara disturbed my afternoon sleep." I let out a tiring chuckle.

She instantly stood up, came behind me, and grabbed my shoulders. "Let me help you relax."

She began to massage my shoulders but I hastily shot up, preventing her from doing it. Her hand remained hanging in the air because of my abrupt move.

"No, you do not have to do that. I am fine." I blurted.

Her eyebrows creased. "Hey, I merely wanted to help you. You shot up as if my touch burnt you."

"No, it's not that. Why'd you even think that?" I was quick to question.

She let out a laugh. "Chil, Ryan, I was just messing with you." She then reached for her books. "Anyway, I must leave so that you can rest."

Agreeing with her decision, I walked her to the doors and bid her goodbye. I stretched my muscles before turning back and sighed heavily when I saw my mom standing arms crossed with a wicked smile tugging her lips.

"Boys do not get tired when around girls. What planet do you belong to, buddy?"

I hung my shoulders, walked up to the sofa, and plopped on it with a huff. "Mom, don't tease me right now, I certainly am worn out."

She rounded the sofa and started giving me a head massage from the back, making me rest my head on the edge of nack rest of the sofa in relaxation.

"Mom, this feels so good," I mumbled, closing my eyes.

"It surely does." She placed a kiss on the top of my head. "You should rest more, buddy. You study all day and night. Don't overexert yourself."

"Mom, I have to maintain my credits to get into my desired university," I muttered, enjoying the delicate and comforting caresses of my mom's fingertips on my scalp.

She animatedly slapped the back of my head. "You will, anyway, because you have earned enough credits. You must enjoy your days in high school till they last."

I laughed at her dramatic comment. "Whoever told you I am not enjoying my school life?"

I heard her scoff. "Yeah, I could see that. You did not even participate in sports events being organized in your school."

I mentally rolled my eyes, resisting myself from replying to her on that because if I did, she would sit with me for hours and lecture me for not being an active, athletic boy.

"Next time think twice before inviting the girls on the same day for studies when you're already tired, alright?" She mumbled.

Sleep had already knocked my senses when she muttered that, which is why I neither nodded my head nor uttered a word. She must have sensed me nodding off, probably that's why she chose not to engage me in conversation with her.

However, Amara, being the stubborn girl she always had been, refused to leave my sleepy, vague thoughts.

Next time when I would tutor her, I'd make sure no one could disturb us because if not before, I freaking wanted to be alone with her now.
