CHAPTER 10

My head snapped up to Rania. “OK, it will be alright.” I told her, and she nodded.

“Do you think I should tell Matthew now or wait until tomorrow?” She asked.

I thought. What would I do in her place? “I’d personally tell him now. That way if you start throwing up tomorrow he won’t be freaking out over why.”

Rania looked a little guilty, and I frowned. “What’s wrong?”

“I’ve been throwing up already. I didn’t tell anyone because I thought I might have just eaten something. But then it started happening every day and I realized I hadn’t had my period. Today Matthew made another pregnancy joke and I figured he might be right.” She said.

“When did you start throwing up?” I asked, slightly annoyed.

“About three weeks ago. Also, my boobs feel bigger.” She told me.

My mouth fell open. “Rania, I love you girl, but do you seriously not want to be pregnant that badly? They’re common symptoms for pregnancy, even I know that!”

“But it’s not as bad anymore! Now I just get these random pains and stuff.” Rania said.

I rolled my eyes. “Look, you should have said something earlier. We could have done everything you’re supposed to do by now!” I told her, hoping I sounded like I knew exactly what I was talking about.

Rania nodded. “I’m sorry. I really am.” She said, before adding, “So, do I call him?”

I sent a quick text to Cam, letting him know the situation, and said, “Yeah, do it now. And when he gets here, I’ll either be in the same room as you or a different one, but I’ll be here too.”

She hugged me. “Thank you! Have I told you how much I love you lately?”

I laughed. “No, but I’ll remind you. Now call your baby daddy already!”

Rania giggled, all traces of her tears gone. “Calm yo’ tits, I’m dialing!”   She pulled out her phone, took a breath, and held it up to her ear.

Her face seemed to light up when she heard his voice, and automatically my thoughts wandered to me and Cam. I better not be that sickening after six months. Speaking of…

“I know our anniversary is tomorrow, I just wanted to give you an early, uh, present.” Rania said, glancing at me in shock.

Tomorrow would mark the six months since they started dating. They’d made it Facebook official May 16th, and now it was November 15th; tomorrow was exactly six months.

“Just come over already.” Rania sighed, and smiled. “See you in a bit.”

“This is really happening.” I told her, faking excitement. I would be happy for her. I couldn’t lose my best friend over this. I wouldn’t.

It seemed lie in no time at all Matthew was knocking on the door.

            “Are you ready?” I asked.

She shook her head, “No, but when will I ever be?”

            “True.”

Rania took a breath. “Can you get it for me?”

I nodded. “Sure. Where will you want me?” I asked, as the knocking grew more persistent.

“Just stay unless I make you leave.” She instructed, and I went to stop Matthew from murdering the door.

“Cool down!” I shouted, barely stepping out of the way before Matthew burst in.

“Is she ok?” He asked, sounding a little freaked out.

I raised an eyebrow. “Just go. Come on, her room. Now.”

Matthew grabbed my wrist as I turned to lead him there. “Look, she’s never called me sounding this desperate. So, I’ll ask again. Is she ok?”

I pulled my arm away. He hadn’t been holding it tightly, I just wanted it back. “She’s not dead or dying, now go see her.” I said, making sure I didn’t give anything away.

Realizing I wasn’t going to say anything else, he stalked off to Rania’s room. I followed, making sure I stayed a little bit behind. He was clearly worrying, though God knows why.

“Thank God you’re ok! Jesus, Rain.” He said, and I walked in as he kissed her passionately.

I looked around awkwardly, checking my phone for something to do. Cam had texted me a brief, holy shit.

I couldn’t think of a good reply, so I put it back into my pocket, looking back at Rania and Matthew.

            Matthew was currently shirtless.

“Ok guys, break it up! I really don’t need a live porn show.” I intervened.

They pulled apart, Rania bright red.

“Right, sorry.” She said, handing Matthew his shirt. “Matthew, I did actually call you here for a reason.”

Matthew froze. “Are you breaking up with me?”

Rania shook her head violently. “No. Hell no. No.” She bit her lip, and Matthew took her hand.

            “Good. So what is it?”

Rania glanced at me, and I nodded. “Matty, I’m pregnant.” She said it so fast; I was surprised he understood her.

But he had, and his body seemed to lose any strength it had as he fell to his knees on the side of the bed.

He looked up at Rania. “Are you sure?” He asked, sounding oddly calm.

Rania nodded, giving him the same look of confusing that was probably on my face too.

Matthew stood up, not saying anything, and walked out. I heard the front door open and close.

I frowned. He wasn’t the type to leave a situation without talking first.

I followed after him with Rania, opening the door a little so I could look out and see what he was doing.

Matthew appeared to be on the phone, and was apparently nodding.

When he finally hung up, he pumped his fist in the air, and let out a loud, “Yes!” to the sky.

I looked to my left where Rania was staring at him, shocked. She shrugged when she saw me looking at her. She turned back to Matthew, and giggled slightly.

I followed her gaze and couldn’t resist pulling my phone out to record him.

Matthew was doing a happy dance.

“Hon, what are you doing?” Rania asked, faking innocence.

He wasn’t even fazed. He pulled her through the door, picking her up in a hug and spinning her around.

“I love you. I have no idea when it happened, but I love you so freaking much.” He said, kissing her.

If it hadn’t been my best friend, I would have thrown up.

“Need me to leave?” I asked, getting no response.

I almost considered getting in my car and heading home, but then I remembered I’d promised her I would be here all night. Luckily we were roughly the same size, and I could borrow some of her clothes tomorrow.

When it became obvious that they were stuck in their own little world, I headed for the freezer, grabbed some ice-cream, and started watching some good old TV, getting settled into the couch.

This was better than the second porn show of the night.

My phone buzzed, and I saw Cam’s face light up on my screen.

I smiled evilly. “Hello, this is Cameron Riter’s whore house, how can I service you?” I asked, teasingly.

“No wonder he likes you. You’re funny.” A woman’s voice said.

I froze. “Uh, hi. Sorry, I thought this was Cam?” I made it into a question.

The woman laughed. “Cam, huh? He’s my son.” She told me.

            Oh, shit.

I forced myself to take deep breaths. I was so not ready for this conversation.

“Hi, Mrs. Riter…” I choked out.

“Just call me Emma, sweetie. What’s your name?”

I frowned. “Taylor, ma’am.” Would she know my name? She called me!

“Taylor. Ok, got it. Sorry, Cameron left his phone on the table and I saw a picture of you so I started browsing his phone, and then I saw a contact called girlfriend so I called it.” Emma said in one breath.

By now my eyes were wide with shock. So that’s why she didn’t know my name…

“I’m scaring you, aren’t I?” She finally said.

I swallowed. “No.” I lied. Cam was definitely going to get yelled at for leaving his phone lying around. I wasn’t good at this. Not at all.

“So, how did you and my son meet?”

“Uh, we had a couple of classes together.” I told her, semi-lying. We really had, but we’d been properly introduced at the first party.

“Did you have sex with him?” Emma asked, and as shocked as I was, I knew it was best not to lie.

“Yes, but not until about two months ago.” I told her. If I kept thinking of her as Emma, instead of Cam’s mom, I could maybe get through this.

“I understand. If you don’t mind me asking, why did Cameron pick you? I’ve never known him to have a girlfriend before, and he didn’t tell me about you.” She said.

I took another deep breath. “Um, I don’t know honestly. We had sex first and then he asked me. I know what I did was a little slutty, but I like to take a risk sometimes. As for why he didn’t tell you, it’s probably because I’m the worst at relationships. Seriously I think this is my longest yet.” I told her, quickly.

Emma was silent for a bit, and I was worried she would start calling me every bad word in the English language, and then some.

Finally, she said, “Ok, I like you. But I want to meet you at some point. If you guys are still together for New Year’s Eve, why don’t you come over? We have a party every year so it won’t be any trouble.”

My mouth fell open. Holy shit, had I really just impressed a boyfriend’s mother?

Unable to really comprehend, I muttered an agreement. “Sure, ok.”

“Great! Also, you sound like a really nice girl. I’m going to steal your number from Cameron’s phone, and text you. Is that ok?” She asked.

I nodded, forgetting she couldn’t see me. “Oh, yeah. Sure.”

            What was going on? Really?

“Perfect! I’ll text you later, Taylor.”

“Ok, bye, ma’am.” I said, earning a laugh from Emma.

“Seriously, call me Emma. I hate sounding old.” She laughed, before hanging up.

Holy fudgsicles with a cherry on top. That honest-to-God just happened.

I sat there in shock for another few seconds, trying to process what had happened today.

Rania was pregnant, and from a quick look outside appeared to be trying to eat Matthew’s face off.

And I’d not only talked to Cameron’s mom, but managed to get her to like me. I hadn’t even done anything right, but she liked me.

“Ok, just breathe. Just. Breathe.” I told myself, trying to focus again on whatever show was on, but all I knew was that somebody had died, and a lot of people were cheering about it.

Even the TV was messed up now apparently.

I heard Rania giggling, and immediately began shoveling ice-cream into my mouth so I wouldn’t have to talk. I was staring at the screen, pretending to be into the movie or whatever the hell was on.

“Hey, Tay.” Rania sighed, and I nodded.

“I found the ice-cream.” I told her, knowing it probably came out a little like “Ifowndaishcweem”.

Rania gave me a little look. “Right… well, are you ok?”

I nodded, smiling a little. “Yeah, congrats and all.” I said, swallowing the freezing cold deliciousness.

“Are you ok?” She asked me, and I nodded.

Rania put her hands on her hips, leaning a little to one side. “Taylor…” She warned, and I quickly glanced at Matthew, who was giving me a worried look.

Immediately, I realized this was how they were going to be with their kid. The thought in my head, I started laughing.

Seeing the new baby parents’ faces, I explained, “you look like parents.”

Rania straightened up. “Sorry. Maybe I will be good at this thing.” She flopped beside me, grabbing the spoon and ice-cream.

“You will. And thanks for taking my ice-cream.” I said, sarcastically.

“Any time.” Rania mumbled around what I assumed was one of the cookie dough balls I’d been trying to save up.

The little bitch. If only she wasn’t pregnant and I could fight her for it. I would win too.

“So, are you going to tell me what’s really up?” She asked.

I smirked. “The ceiling, the roof, the sky, the clouds-,” I was cut off by Rania putting her hand over my mouth.

“I meant with you.” She said.

I sighed, pulling her hand off of mine. “Give me my ice-cream first.”

“It was in my freezer…” She joked, but handed it over anyway.

“Thank you. As for me, I’m fine. Maybe I’m a little freaked out, but I’m ok.” I said, realizing I really was. I had about two months, just under, to prepare. Besides, me and Cam would probably be over by then.

“Why are you freaked out?” Rania asked.

I glanced at Matthew, who shrugged and said, “Rania, I have to go. I’ll pick you up in the morning?”

She nodded, letting him kiss her quickly before he left. “I love you.” He said, and shut the door behind me.

A little smile stayed on her face, but all I could focus on was what she’d said. Or rather, hadn’t said. “Rania, he said he loves you. Why didn’t you say it back?”

She shifted in her seat a little. “Tay, I just think he’s saying it because of the baby. His dad wasn’t around, and I don’t think he wants his child to have the same situation.”

“But his mom married his step-dad Matthew Sr. when she was still pregnant. Girl, that is no excuse. What is it really?” I asked.

Rania looked at me then, and sighed. “You first. Why are you freaked?”

I took a slow bite of the ice-cream, which was slowly melting. At least it still tasted good. “Cam’s mom called me.” I said.

Rania gasped. “Oh, damn! Are you ok? How did it go?”

“I’m fine. I think. And it went good. She said she liked me, and that I was officially invited to their New Year’s Eve party if me and Cam were still together.” I summarized.

Rania squealed. “I want you to tell me everything!”

I laughed, rolling my eyes. “Ok! Calm down woman!” I went over everything, making sure to cover every little detail. I knew Rania was trying to postpone her story, and I understood. I was going to help her, no matter what. That was my motto for the next 18 years or so.

“Whoa. I can’t believe she’s going to text you. She seems cool.”

I nodded, taking a final bite of the ice-cream. I got up to throw away the now empty tub, and checked the freezer for more. Thank the merciful ice-cream Gods…

I pulled out the second tub, handing it to Rania. “Now time for your little story.”

She groaned. “Fine. I won’t say it back, because I’m not sure if I love him. I think it’s just lust.” She admitted.

I frowned. “Why would you think that?”

“It just seems that all we do is make out, or have sex. I feel like we never talk, you know?”

I shrugged. “No, but we’re different. So talk to him. Start a conversation about your kid, anything. Next time you go over, limit the kissing, and see how just talking goes. If you feel exactly the same, it’s probably love. If you spend the entire time picturing him naked, then it’s lust. Simple.” I told her.

She laughed, shaking her head. “For someone who’s never been in love, you sure give good advice about it.”

I mocked tipping a hat to her. “Any time, milady.” I joked.

She hit my shoulder lightly, checking her phone for the time. “Shit, we should probably get to sleep.” She told me. “We still have school tomorrow.”

I gasped. “Shoot I still have to call my dad.” I pulled my phone out, pausing when I felt eyes on me. Rania was staring at me in shock. “What?”

“You said shoot. Not shit.” She said. I thought. Oh, yeah. I had.

“Yeah, I just figure I might as well get into a habit of not swearing. I mean, if you’re going to have a kid I’ll probably be around him or her a lot and you won’t want me teaching it cuss words.” I said. It was true. Not that I’d thought about it first. It felt more like an automatic reaction.

“Right. I should probably do that. So should Cam and Matthew.” She muttered. “Well, I’m going to sleep. Just don’t wake me up and we’re all good.” She waved, and left me alone with the ice-cream. I sighed longingly at it, before covering it. I’d probably had way more than was allowed. Ever.

I dialed my dad, who answered quickly. “Are you home yet?”

“No, Rania’s got something serious going on and asked me to stay the night for moral support.” I told him, not exactly lying.

“Ok, just let me know when you leave for school. I love you.”

“Love you too, dad.” I hung up.

Today had been way too dramatic for me. I was ready for bed.

Something was ringing. Was it my ears? No, it was my alarm. I felt around in the general direction of where my phone usually was, only to be greeted with a groan.

My eyes flung open. Oh, right. I’d slept over at Rania’s. I located my phone, turning the alarm off.

“Come on, girl. We have school.” I said.

Rania groaned again. “I don’t want to go.” She muttered, before shooting up quickly. “Dammit…” She managed to get out, before dashing out of the room.

I was about to follow, alarmed at her sudden awakening, before I heard the unmistakable sounds of her throwing up.

That was… nice. Please dear God note the sarcasm.

            I checked my phone again.
