High School Reunion

You park your car in the all too familiar parking lot.

Your old high school.

It's been about six years since you graduated high school.

You're now 24 and a successful photographer.

Of course, you're not as successful as a few of your classmates.

Your closest friends Conan and Olivia both became musicians.

You had the opportunity to be their tour photographer a few years back, an experience you still cherish.

And then there's Jenna.

Now a very successful actor, but that's not how you remember her.

She was your high school sweetheart. You dated for almost 3 years, and you graduated together.

Before you both graduated, you knew things were falling apart.

Both of you wanted different things, a distant future.

So you went your separate ways. I went to different colleges and worked in other industries.

Of course, you moved on from all that (it's what you tell yourself anyway), but you can't lie when you say it's strange to be back.

You turn your engine off and step out of your car.

You're excited to see everyone again and catch up.

Heading through the double doors, you walk through the familiar corridors filled with lockers.

You turn to your right and enter the gym hall, where the reunion occurs.

You walk into the gym hall, looking around to spot your friends.

You feel someone touch your arm and look to see who it is.

"Hey, Y/n, it's good to see you," Jenna says, giving you a soft smile.

"Hi, it's great to see you too! You look amazing" You smile back before the two of you hug.

"Have you seen Olivia or Conan? I was looking for them," you ask.

She nods. "Yeah, I just saw them. Let's go find them together."

The two of you walk together, talking briefly before you find your friends.

"Y/n, you look amazing. I'm so glad you're here," Olivia says excitedly, pulling you into a tight hug.

You grin, greeting Conan before the four of you talk happily.

After a while, you walk around the building, and Jenna joins you.

The two of you walk to one of your old classrooms.

"This was our old biology class, wasn't it?" Jenna asks, sitting at one of the desks.

You chuckle, nodding. "Oh yeah, I remember it perfectly. My worst class by far."

Jenna smiles. "Hey, this was the first class we shared. It's how we met, remember?"

Flashback

Sitting down at your desk, you sigh.

You hated Biology. It was a complex subject for you to grasp. The teacher was nice, but you still dreaded having to sit through lesson after lesson, feeling confused.

"Good morning, everyone. Before we start today's class, we have someone new joining. She just transferred from another school, so I want you all to make her feel welcome. She should be here any minute now-"

Just as the teacher was about to continue, you saw Jenna walk into the room, looking flushed.

"I'm so sorry I'm late; my bus took the wrong route", Jenna explains, embarrassed.

Your teacher smiles and beckons her in.

"Don't worry about it; you're ok. Now, why don't you sit, and we can get started."

Jenna nods and looks around the classroom. There are a few empty seats, like the one beside you.

You're sitting at the back, watching her curiously.

Jenna then meets your eye, and you send her a smile. That must have reassured her because soon she's going to the empty desk beside you.

"Do you mind if I sit here?" she asks quietly.

"Of course not, go ahead", you nod.

Little did you know that this interaction was the starting point of your friendship and your relationship

End of flashback

"Yeah, I remember," you smile, sitting on the desk beside her.

"So, you remember anything we learned from this dreadful subject?" you chuckle.

"Only the things we went over while studying", Jenna grins, making you laugh.

"For some reason, those are the most memorable", you smirk, nudging her playfully.

You're both quiet for a minute before Jenna asks, "Wanna take a walk to the bleachers?"

You nod, and the two of you leave the building.

Sitting down, you look towards the empty football pitch.

"Damn, I should have joined the football team; maybe I would have been a famous player by now", you joke, making Jenna smile.

"I'm glad you didn't; your photography is beautiful."

You raise your eyebrow at her. "You keep up with my photography Ortega? I'm honoured."

She rolls her eyes playfully. "Don't flatter yourself; I've seen your IG posts, that's all."

"You know, maybe we should do a brand photo shoot together. It would be pretty cool," you say.

"That would be so fun; I'm in."

"Great, I love working with my fans, you know?" you tease, hearing her groan and punch your shoulder softly.

"I see you're still as annoying as you were when we dated", she laughs.

"And I see you're still just as beautiful as when we dated", you blurt out.

She turns her head to look at you, confused.

"Shit, I'm sorry. I'm an idiot; I didn't mean to make it awkward. Maybe I should go-"

"Don't, please" Jenna says, gently putting her hand on your knee.

You nod, unable to meet her eye. You don't see that she's smiling at you, not in a teasing way, but in a sincere one.

"Y/n L/n, do you perhaps still like me, just a little bit?" she whispers.

You regain confidence and look at her again, matching her whispered tone.

"Who says I ever stopped?"

Jenna smirks, moving to cup your face gently, silently asking for permission.

You nod, and she leans in, kissing you. Smiling against her lips, you gently wrap your arms around her waist, keeping her close.

"It's been six fucking years, and I still get butterflies from us kissing", Jenna whispers against your lips, making you chuckle.

"Jenna Ortega, are you trying to say that you perhaps also still like me, just a little bit?" you echo her words, smiling.

"I do, Y/n, I really do," she says earnestly, gently tracing her thumb across your cheekbone.

She used to do something small when you were together, and you missed it.

"Listen, I should have told you this years ago, but I'm sorry. I could have stayed with you, and we could have gone to the same college. Instead, I left the country and attended some stupid photography school. Maybe if I stayed, we would have still been together by then, who knows" you sigh.

"I thought you loved that photography school? You looked so happy when I saw your pictures from there."

You nod, holding her hand gently. "You're right; I did love it there. It was a great course, and I learned so much. But I missed you a lot. I debated dropping it all and returning to you, but I didn't want to be so pathetic."

Jenna smiles, squeezing your hand softly. "So I'm guessing it would also be pathetic for me to ask if you'd want to make up for lost time?"

"Oh no, it definitely would be. I didn't think you'd stoop so low, Ortega," you grin.

She pushes you playfully, smiling. "You're such an ass, we were having a moment, and you ruined it."

You lean in and kiss her again, tilting her chin up slightly. Pulling back after a minute, you ask, "Have I fixed it yet?"

She shakes her head, pulling you back in for another kiss.

After that, you talk for a while before you go your separate ways again.

Except this time, you're coming back to her, just like you should have a long time ago.
