Are You Happy?

You're leaning against the wall, drink in hand. Another party. Another opportunity to meet a beautiful woman whose name you wouldn't remember by tomorrow morning.

You look around, contemplating your choices. You do this often, so often you could call it second nature.

Sighing, you take a sip of your drink. It's all useless, you know it. None of them could ever compare.

You finish your drink, deciding to spend the night alone rather than feign interest in someone new.

You take one last look at the people surrounding you, and the eyes you meet almost make you drop your glass.

It's her.

The woman could never come close to anyone in this room. The woman you cowardly left five years ago after things became difficult. The woman you couldn't get out of your mind ever since, no matter how hard you tried.

You suddenly couldn't breathe. The crowded room felt more claustrophobic than ever.

You needed air. You needed an escape. You needed to escape her and the feeling she evoked in you.

You avert your eyes from hers and go to the bar to put your empty glass down.

Existing the building would mean walking past in her direction. You decide the rooftop would suffice for now.

You felt relief as soon as your lungs filled with the cold Brooklyn air. You walked over to the railing and leaned against it, internally cursing yourself at how ridiculous your reaction was.

You were still the same coward that left her all those years ago. You couldn't even meet her eyes for more than 10 seconds.

Pushing away from the railing, you finally find enough courage to leave the building.

You're about to turn around, but her voice freezes you in place.

"Running away once again, Y/n? I guess old habits do die hard."

Her tone wasn't mocking, nor was it laced with venom. It was filled with disappointment.

You turn around slowly, meeting her eyes once more. She looks incredible, as she always did.

"I would ask what you're doing here, but it would be a stupid question. You're all over every billboard in this place. I'm happy for you, Jenna; I mean it. You deserve the recognition."

You give her an honest smile. She was always insanely talented, and you knew she would one day make everyone fall head over heels for her, just like she did to you.

She sighs, looking at you with an expression you couldn't pinpoint.

"Please don't talk to be like you're a fan or another casting director. I have enough of that daily," she says, stepping closer to you.

You keep your eyes locked on hers, not daring to move.

She reaches out to take your hand. You look down at your hands, and a warm feeling surrounds you. You give her a gentle squeeze.

You look back up and see her glistening eyes, a now pleading look on her face.

You nod wordlessly and pull her into your embrace, resting your chin on her shoulder.

She tucks her face into your neck, something you've always adored. While rubbing her back softly, you hesitantly lean down to kiss her temple.

"I'm sorry", you whisper, "I'm so sorry for being a coward. You didn't deserve the way I treated you and the way I left things."

She pulls back, looking at you with those soft eyes that make you weak on your knees.

She takes a deep breath before speaking.

"I didn't come here for your apologies. I came here because I missed you" Your eyes widen at her confession.

You shake your head quickly, unable to meet her eyes. You start pulling back until she touches your cheek and forces you to look at her.

"Don't you dare walk away from me again, Y/n? You're a heartless asshole, and I fucking hate you with every fibre of my being. It's what you expected me to say, isn't it?"

She runs her hands through her hair, her frustration evident.

You don't know what to say, so you look at her silently. She chuckles, looking back at you before continuing.

"You know what's hilarious, Y/n? I still fucking love you. I haven't stopped thinking about you since you left. I was hoping you would come back and try to fix things, but no, you moved to the other side of the country in hopes of never seeing me again. How pitiful of me to be the one to come after you when you've happily moved on."

At that, you look back at her with a scoff.

"Happily moved on? Is that what you would call moping about every goddamn bar in this place, just hoping I could drown out the emptiness with a random girl or a shit ton of alcohol? To try and find something that couldn't even come close to making me feel what you did?"

You let out a sarcastic laugh, stepping towards her again.

"I'm miserable, Jenna. I hate this fucking city and how fake everyone in it is. I ran away from you as soon as I saw you because I couldn't face you and the feelings that still consumed me all those years ago. I deserve this place, ok? I fit in perfectly. So please go before I end up hurting you again."

She doesn't utter another word, just looking at you as tears roll down her cheeks.

Despise yourself, you wipe away the tears, letting your hand caress her cheek softly.

"Look me in the eyes and tell me you don't love me. Then I'll go," she says.

You can't help but smile at the request. Of course, you loved her; you never stopped.

"I may be a coward, but I'm not a liar. I'm still incredibly in love with you."

She gives you her signature smile for the first time since the two of you reunited. The weight that fell from her chest at your confession could not have relieved her more.

She cups your face, looking at you with love in her eyes. You hold her waist gently.

"Would you let this idiot back into your life? She's finally ready to be brave and make it up to an incredible woman who just admitted she still loves her too," you whisper.

Jenna grins, leaning forward to kiss you deeply. You sigh into the kiss, holding her close as you savour the feeling of her lips on yours once more.

She pulls back abruptly, and you look at her, confused. She grips your collar and draws you closer, whispering against your lips.

"I swear to god, if you run away one more time, you'll regret it" You nod, a smile tugging at your lips.

"I wouldn't dare to, my love."
