Kadence's P.O.V

My dress finally came in! Once I heard my doorbell rung I knew what it was, and I am completely in love with it. My heart started to race, I brought the black bag to my room and hung it on my mirror and slowly I unzipped it.

My smile just grew even wider. I'm nervous yet eager, also considering that Brooklyn and I are going to the dance together I couldn't pick mine out with her. I went yesterday and Ellie's dress was simple of this beautiful auburn red it was long and leakage. Which perfectly fit her skin tone and body.

For mine I had to make some adjustments, Ellie's mom is always so busy, but she always made time for her. I was sort of jealous of Ellie parents and her. In middle school their relationship was unreal well comparing to what I had.

Even though my parents came back when I was seven... I mean yes, they were here but I still felt a little loss of bonding between our family. After Ellie's mom made the adjustment she sent a private deliverer to send it.

Today Jamie and Brooklyn are getting theirs, Ellie made sure I wouldn't see her today which is pretty annoying it's not like we're going to a wedding. Right now I'm not as excited for the Fall Dance but for Prom I am thrilled, but Brooklyn and I going to the Fall Dance? I felt my heart fluster of just the thought of it.

"Sweetie we're home!" I heard my mom yell down the stairs.

Weird, they're home early. I went down the kitchen and saw my dad on the couch watching the news, he was always a politics guy. My mom was snooping through the fridge probably looking for last nights dinner.

"Hey! You guys are home early."

"Indeed we are." She stifled a laugh.

She closed the fridge and held a bowl of salad with salmon on the side which I was right, that was last nights dinner which I made. I rolled my eyes.

"Why so early?" I asked

"Slow day, no one really needs us plus the other doctors are covering for us." My mother said while devouring her food.

I laughed at how sloppy she was eating, she looked at me with a confused face and I saw some dressing on the side of her mouth. I handed her a napkin and she wiped it off.

"So have you heard back from Hopkins?"

"No..." I mumbled.

For the past couple days I've been thinking about the offer Andrea offered me. As much as I love learning medicine and saving lives, what about my passion for dance?

"I'll call them if you want." I heard my dad say.

He sat on the couch still looking at the screen.

"No, uh... it's okay."

"No, I can if you want remember I went there and I'm close to all of the professors, your G.P.A and scores are phenomenal they have to accept you."

I looked down, he got up off the couch and walked over to the kitchen next to my mom on the counter.

"No, actually. I'm looking into a different school."

My mom looked up and dropped her fork, my dad also looked up with his chin slightly tilted in the air. The look of confusion grew on his face. Shit, maybe I shouldn't have said anything.

"What?" He asked with hurt.

"I got offered almost a full ride scholarship to Juilliard." I said with some pride.

"Sweetie that's great!" My mom exclaimed.

"Wait what about Hopkins?" He asked not sounding as excited.

"I mean I do like it there, I do... it's just I don't have a strong passion for it like I do with dance." I said.

"When was the last time you danced?! Last thing I know is that you haven't danced since what freshman year?!"

He raised his voice. The lump in my throat started to swell, why was he yelling? I thought he would be proud of me.

"You've worked so hard for this, why the change?" He sighed.

"Nathan!" My mother yelled at him.

"No! I want to hear!" He looked at me with a hard stare as if his hard work didn't pay off.

"I do like the thought of being surgeon dad! Except I don't like it as much as dancing. Hopkins was your dream not mine, you grew up there and you forced me to go there like once a year to visit."

I paused trying to catch my breath, I held it in too long because of the intense pressure my dad was giving me.

"You forced Jacob into being a surgeon and he didn't want to go to Hopkins, so you got mad but he refused so he went to Mayo College instead. Why do you think he doesn't come home as much, because he's in his intern year? No! He has had time but just didn't want to come home because he didn't want to have a conversation of just medicine!"

"Kadence!" He yelled.

"No! But at least mom can support me!"

Everything went silent. Fuck, why'd I just do that... Soon I felt the hot tears cascading out of my eyes. I ran up the stairs and laid in my bed. Jester followed after and jumped on my bed. He laid his head on my thigh while my body was lying face down. I don't understand why it's so hard to support me. I thought my family would understand.

Jacob hasn't talked to me in a while, I miss him so much... I grabbed my phone and scrolled through my contacts, I got down to his number but felt a slight hesitation. I quickly scrolled to Brooklyn's number instead and dialed it.

first ring, nothing.

second ring, nothing.

third ring, nothing.

fourth ring, nothin-

"H-Hello?" She said laughingly.

"Hey." I laughed yet cried.

Her voice was nice to hear, just hearing one word gave me goosebumps and the sense of safety.

"Are you okay Kadence?" She sounded with worry.

"Kadence!" I heard a high pitch scream on the other side of the line.

"Is that Jamie?" I laughed.

"Yeah, sorry about that... W-What's wrong?"

"I'm just having a hard afternoon, how's finding your dress?" I asked holding back the tears.

I tried to change the subject, all I wanted was comfort and to hear her voice. I didn't want to talk about it, I needed her here. I needed Brooklyn.

"Kadence, seriously what's wrong?"

She avoided my question, I suck at lying especially in an upset state.

"Nothing," I said.

"Lies." She remarked.

"Like I said, hard morning."

"Hey, I have my dress already but Jamie doesn't. Give me one second."

She paused. I heard distinctive talking in the background which wasn't long conversation.

"Okay, well I can come over if you want and Jamie will stay here with Ellie."

"Honestly... that will be great."

"Alright, I'll see you soon."

She hung up without another word. I felt relieved calling her, but my tears wouldn't stop. I heard Jester whine in the distance, I patted his head softly and he snuggled closer it felt calming to feel his comfort at least. Slowly the tears fell heavier and they took over my eyes causing them to drift off.

"Charge to one-hundred!" I heard my dad yell.

"Clear!" Another man yelled.

"Start compressions again!" My mom yelled.

"Charge to two-hundred!"

"Clear!"

I heard my parents yell across the room to one another. They made me sit outside behind the blinds with one of the interns.

"Hey Kadence, want to make paper airplanes with me?" The intern asked.

I shook my head.

"What's happening to that lady over there?" I asked.

"Let's not worry about that."

He started to fold the paper, the rustling was loud but not as loud as my parents yelling at each other. I sat up straight in my chair and saw my parents walk out of the room. My mom looks stressed I shouldn't bother her, the air felt thick.

The door to the room was opened, I peeked to see what happened and saw a woman's body life-less, she was pale and white. . The door closed.

"Hey, sweetie!" My father swooped me up and he laughed.

How could he be so happy when that woman just died? I don't understand. As he picked me up I saw other people in the room, just never really saw their reaction. I had a feeling they were sad, I heard the sobs.

"Dad, why aren't you sad?" I asked him.

He sat me down on the high blue counters and gave out a large sigh, his face fell.

"I am sad sweetie, but I uh... think you will understand when you grow up."

"Kadence..." I heard someone call out.

A soft shake was being pushed up against my right arm. I gave out a small groan.

"Kadence, hey..." I heard another whisper.

My eyes fluttered open but it was hard, I could still feel the heaviness within my lids. Brooklyn was kneeling next to my bed side.

"Um... your mom let me in." She whispered.

I felt a tear fall down off my eyelash and landed on my pillow, this is embarrassing.

"Kadence, what's wrong?"

She sat up on my bed while I laid my head down on the pillow. I can already smell her scent filling my blanket. I didn't respond to her question. I heard her let out a sigh, but the pain in my heart felt so real I didn't feel the support with my parents.

I heard a creak and felt her arm wrap around my waist, I tingle shot through my body. She pulled me in closer to her chest, her hand stroke up and down my back comforting me. I looked up and rested my forehead against hers, my chest got a little bit lighter and I heard my breath hitched.

"Hey, it's going to be okay." She whispered.

My lips quivered, I felt her hand run through the back of my hair and I buried my head into the crook of her neck. Her thumb stroked my cheek gently, she didn't say anything. I can hear her heartbeat it was calm, I closed my eyes and I felt warm and safe.

"Hey Kadence..." I heard her whisper.

I looked up again and I saw her looking directly at me.

"Would you like to go somewhere?" she asked innocently.

"Where to?" I sniffled.

"A place that is special to me."

"And what's that?"

"You'll see unless you agree to come with me."

She gave a light smile and our faces were centimeters away, was this a date? I mean what do I know, I don't even know if she likes me. I heard a slight knock at the door, we both tore our eyes from each other and looked towards to see my mother standing at the frame.

"O-Oh, I'm sorry did I interrupt something?"

She asked looking embarrassed on walking in on us, except we weren't really doing anything.

"What? no." I said.

"Okay, well Ellie's mother just called and she says she needs your help."

"What why didn't she just call me instead."

"She said she did but you didn't answer."

I must've been asleep, my mouth turned into an 'O' shape, I looked towards my phone. I saw multiple messages from Ellie and her mom, I skimmed through it to see something about a fashion show about the week after the dance.

"Can we reschedule that special place? Apparently, this is quite urgent."

I asked Brooklyn with a pout and she gave a nod.

"I'll drive you there?" She asked.

I smirked with a nod.

"Let me just get ready."

~~~~~~
"Ellie, what is so urgent now?" I raised my voice while coming through the front door.
I rolled my eyes and both Brooklyn and I walked into her living room. Her house was large and white, it was very classy as if it were a New York condo. Once making it into the room there were distinctive loud conversations with multiple designers touching up Mrs. Vanderwal outfits.
Ellie was on the side being measured up from head to toe and from waist to chest.
"Kadence!" I heard a voice yell out.
Quickly I turned my head to see her mom walking up to me.
"Darling it is so lovely to see you again."
She kissed me on both cheeks, her platinum blonde hair was bright but not too significantly bright, and her cheek bones were high. She dropped her hands to my shoulders lightly.
"Good to see you too Mrs. Vanderwal even though we saw each other yesterday."
"Sweetie," she breathed.
"I need your help with measurements. I am not saying you'll have to walk the run way, but I just need real live mannequins."
"I'm fine not walking on the run way, I've done it a bit too much with you over summer." I laughed.
"But the publicity is amazing for my company, you and Ellie are literally my golden girls."
She dropped her hands and snapped one finger in the air, immediately two women came up to me and started to measure. They pulled me aside by my hand and I turned to see Brooklyn, I couldn't just abandon her like that.
"Um Mrs. Vanderwal, can Brooklyn join too?"
Brooklyn's face dropped, and she shook her head with hesitation and force."
"Why of course! Why not."
Brooklyn gave me a face of worry, but soon a smile appeared below her nose, I knew she'll hate me for this but that's okay.
"You know you love it." I mouthed
She simply rolled her eyes. Sooner or later I got done before the other two, for some reason I didn't see Jamie I didn't really think about it before but I knew she was here earlier with Brooklyn and Ellie. Where did she go?
Ever since I got here Ellie's been quiet, maybe Brooklyn should've never left them alone together. I walked towards Ellie and I'm pretty sure she was on her fifth outfit.
"Hey, you." I greeted with a sly smile.
"Hey," she breathed.
"Can you um grab me some water?" She asked.
"Tsk, tsk, sweetie you know you can't do that, it'll ruin the outfit measurements."
The lady with the measuring tape said.
"Why does size matter anyways?" Ellie groaned.
She tilted her head back with annoyance, she looked like she was dying.
"You know how the modeling business works," I mumbled.
I looked back and saw Brooklyn suffering from the two ladies fitting her in another outfit, oh how I do not regret saying something. I faced Ellie again.
"You okay?"
"Does it look like I am doing okay?"
"Ellie... I mean between you and Jamie. You're avoiding her and the conversation to make up. Did she leave after Brooklyn?"
She stood quietly.
"Yeah she left and I mean you took Brooklyn away so everything got awkward after that."
"Sorry... my parents were giving me a hard time."
"Let me guess, your dad?" She guessed correctly with her eyebrow cocked.
I nodded.
"Becoming a surgeon?" She guessed correctly again.
I nodded again.
"You need to do what you love and what you want not what he wants, okay?"
She said while pointing to my chest, she then grabbed my hand.
"I know, thank you. Anyways did you and Jamie talk when Brooklyn left?"
She shook her head telling me no.
"You guys seriously need to talk."
"Why? so she can tell me again how sleeping with me was a mistake?" She said bitterly.
"Well, I don't want it to be awkward between our group." I pouted.
"At least talk to her before the dance, okay? The dance is literally in a couple days, three days to be exact." I remarked.
"Fine, fine I will." She sighed.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and turning around I saw Brooklyn looking exhausted.
"Never... again..." She panted.
Ellie and I both laugh.
"Try living in my world." Ellie teased.
"Brooklyn sweetie your dress is done from the adjustments I made earlier." Mrs. Vanderwal called out.
She pulled out a slim dark blue dress that looked absolutely gorgeous.
"Mom! You're not supposed to show it to everyone!" Ellie yelled.
"Oh, why?" She asked looking confused and startled by the sudden outburst from Ellie.
"Because! Kadence is Brooklyn's date!"
"Well, you certainly did not tell me!" She argued back to her daughter, but I could only stifle a laugh watching them bicker.
My grin was wide, and Brooklyn's face was tinted in pink. How could she be embarrassed? The dress will fit her so well and I don't think I could handle seeing her in such a wonderful casual dress.
"So does that mean you are going to the dance with Jamie then Ellie?" Her mom asked.
Everyone stopped worrying about the revealing of the dress and a sudden change shifted in Ellie. All remembering what happened the night of Donovan's party refreshed in our heads, and I can only see Ellie sadden a bit.
"Uh... no." She weakly said.
"Oh, so who are you going with?" Her mother asked pressuring her words.
I can tell her mom was putting pressure on the question. Ellie took a large inhale, her eyes averted to the ceiling, but soon she stood up straight looking confident.
"Myself." She said proudly, a light of content was glinting in her eyes. I was happy for Ellie, she might have a bad history with relationships but I knew she was a strong woman.
"That's my girl." Mrs. Vanderwal smiled.
She embraced Ellie with a hug.
"You don't need a man or a woman to go with, you can work it by yourself." She said in her ear next to her encouring her more.
Wow, I never thought I would hear that from her mom, but then again at least she can support her daughter.
"Girls! I need at least a couple more measurements before you can go, so..."
Her mom snapped her fingers and Brooklyn was the first to be pulled away.
"W-Wait again?" She said looking in shock.
Her face was filled with horror which was probably from the thought of trying on more outfits, she wasn't really the one to do this kind of stuff. Before I could say another word to Brooklyn or Ellie, I got dragged away as well.
A/N: The next chapter is filled with fun! The event is going to be grand but not as grand to what I have in mind. If it is confusing please comment below so I can try my hardest to clarify who is talking within the next chapter.
Much love xxJess.
