you were nervous. that much you could tell. hell, anyone who took a good look at you could tell as they walked by. by the way you stood with your head down, gaze focused on your hands as they fiddled at your cuticles. thankfully, everyone else around you was busy unpacking their cars of luggage, telling their parents goodbye and asking the guides around where to go. it was fairly early in the morning but there were still many students here already. you were sure it would be like this all day.

it was move in day at marley university, your dream school. located five hours away from your hometown in the middle of the city. the environment was completely new to you, seeing as you came from a small town, and although you were ecstatic when you got accepted, you couldn't shake the anxiety that came with it.

"y/n! come help with your things!" your father shouts, tearing you from your fixation on your nails.

"sorry! i'm coming." you apologize, doing a quick jog over to him take a box from his hands. you didn't pack much, only what you thought would be absolutely necessary. and if you lacked anything, you were literally in the middle of the city.

"the campus is more beautiful in person than in pictures huh?" your dad asks. "here take this, lokes." he hands a box to your younger brother.

"why isn't jae helping?" he retorts, referring to his twin who was looking at the campus in awe.

"sis, you gotta tell me how to get accepted into here!" jae gushes.

you chuckle and ruffle his hair. "you guys are barely going into your sophomore year. no need to stress yet."

"yeah but with his stupid brains, he's gonna need it." loki scoffs.

"like you're one to talk!"

"alright enough you two! y/n, i think the cart is filled with everything besides what you and loki are carrying so lead the way."

this was it. everything you brought with you was on the cart and a second trip back to the car wasn't necessary therefore, this was close to you saying goodbye. your hands beneath the box shook slightly as you began to trudge forward to building Maria. you were thankful your dorm was only on the second story and you didn't have to wait very long for the elevator to arrive. yes, the building was packed with other students moving in their belongings but you were able to make your way through the crowd. it was obvious that this was the girl's dorm seeing as how most of the students were female.

you approached room 127 and brought your dorm key up to the lock. as you entered, you realized that no one has come yet besides you. you had no idea who your roommates were nor how the rooming situation was gonna be. you did notice that when you first walked in, you were greeted with a small living room area along with a small kitchen. there was a little space that held a small dining table. there was a total of four rooms, two on each side with a jack-and-jill bathroom in between that was shared. you decided to choose the first room on the right and headed inside. the room was small with a twin bed, dresser, and tiny desk in the corner. there was also a small closet. you placed the box you were holding on the desk and turned to face your family.

"it's... cozy." your dad comments.

loki scoffs, "cozy? this room is the size of a prison cell." he points to the small window that gives a good view of the main campus. hopefully your roommates won't hate you for taking the room with a view. "at least you have that."

they begin to help you unload your belongings into your room. you tell them that you will unpack yourself. in all honesty, you didn't want them to leave so soon but you know how long the drive was back home.

"don't get in too much trouble you two. you know i'm only a text away, right?" you tell your brothers as you pull them into a hug.

"yeah, yeah." they both grumble, wiping quickly at their eyes. you hide your giggle, not wanting to embarrass them. you guys were fairly close, despite having different mothers and a three year age gap.

you turn to your father, who was also just as choked up as your brothers. "i'll miss you, kiddo."

you smile and pull him into a hug. "i'll be home for the holidays. and have the twins teach you how to facetime." you hug your father tighter, feeling yourself tear up. "she's not coming, is she?"

"i tried to get a hold of her. nothing. cheryl wishes she could've come to see you off but her boss called her in last minute." he sighs. cheryl was your step mother and even though you weren't close, she still treated you as her own.

you pull back and give your father a sad smile. "better get going before traffic gets bad."

"you have your medication right? don't forget to take it." he says sternly.

"of course. now get outta here." you playfully shove his shoulder. he laughs a little, giving a small wave. once your family leaves, you sit on the edge of the bed. the exhaustion hits you like a truck. of course you saved all your last minute packing to the night before and then your thoughts were running a mile a minute as you tried to sleep. you got at best maybe two hours.

you decided an attempt at a nap was well deserved but knew the medication wasn't gonna be of help to you at all. so, you locked the door to your room and placed some boxes in front of the door that led into the shared bathroom. this was a way of marking the room as claimed but also to make sure no one tried to wake you if you did manage to fall asleep.

you pulled out your pen that you had and quickly took a couple hits. while making your bed, the high hits you. you lay on the fresh linen sheets and stair up at the ceiling. you hadn't heard anyone enter the dorm since you had arrived. what were your roommates like? would they like you? hate you? completely ignore you?

thankful that the weed had helped calmed your anxiety somewhat, you closed your eyes. you tried to ignore all the thoughts running through your head and eventually, they did stop and you felt yourself slip into a state of unconscious.

___________

your eyes fluttered open and you heard a couple of hushed voices outside your room. you should've known that the walls were thin here. the voices become a little more stern and you hear someone let out a huff before a knock is placed on your door. you groan inwardly to yourself, anxious to meet the people you would be rooming with for the next year or so. you grab your phone and take a quick glance at the time. you had been asleep for a little over two hours which was normal for you.

you quickly get up from your bed and head over to the door, swinging it open as a small fist was about to knock again. your eyes met with dull blue, almost grey eyes. the girl before you was gorgeous to say the least with short black hair.

"um, hi." she softly spoke. "i'm mikasa. one of your roommates."

a blonde girl came to stand beside her. "i'm annie, another roommate of yours."

"and i'm sasha! always gotta save the best for last." a perky brunette introduced with a wink.

"i'm y/n" you say behind a yawn. "sorry i was napping after doing some unpacking."

"i'm sorry if i woke you up! we were actually wondering if you'd like to join us for some ramen in the city? maybe get to know each other a bit more?" mikasa asked, chewing on her bottom lip nervously.

as if on instinct, your stomach growled in response.

"my stomach did that too when mikasa suggested it to us earlier." sasha laughed.

you looked at the brunette and blinked before chuckling. "yeah, i'd be happy to go."

"great! i'll drive." mikasa said with a smile. the four of you dispersed to gather your bags and put on some shoes.

you all left the dorm and headed to mikasa's car which was a cute blue honda civic. you and sasha sat in the back, staring at the scenery of the city as mikasa drove. no one really spoke, just listened to the music playing on the radio.

it took a minute to find parking considering it was a saturday night in the middle of marley. you stared around in awe as you walked to the ramen bar. it was a cute mom and pop ramen shop but it was still busy. thankfully, you all were seated right away.

after ordering beverages, you all looked over the menu to decide what to order.

"if i order wontons, would anyone want any?" sasha asked.

"i'd probably take one." annie shrugged. mikasa and you nodded in agreement.

"damn, i was hoping you would all say no. guess i'll do an order for myself and one for yall to share." she mumbled earning a laugh from the table.

"so, y/n, where are you from?" mikasa asked, taking a sip of her soda.

"oh, i'm from oak town. it's about five hours away so i'm pretty far from home." you share.

"we're all from paradis. about an hour away." annie told you.

"why not commute?" you ask.

"because we wanted to have the real college experience. the dorming, the roommates, the partying." she winks. "besides, gas is fucking expensive."

before you could reply, a waitress came to take your order. as promised, sasha did order two rounds of wontons along with the four bowls of ramen for you all.

"what are you all majoring in?" you decided to try and learn more about them. so far, they seemed like people you would get along well with. you already felt comfortable with them which had you relieved.

"sasha and i are aiming to be vets so zoology i suppose is what you call it." mikasa said.

"i grew up on a farm and it peaked my interest to learn to care more properly for the animals. meanwhile mikasa just loves bunnies." sasha added in. the waitress had come at the moment and sasha's eyes gleamed as the food was placed down before you all. you giggled lowly, assuming she had a huge love for food.

"i'm a political science major. no idea what i want to do with that yet though when the time comes." annie said, blowing on her ramen to cool it down. "what about you?"

"i'm a nursing major actually. i heard the school has a phenomenal nursing program." you share. annie nods, going in for a bite of the food in front her.

"okay before we completely dig in, how do you all sleep?"

you looked at mikasa, slightly confused by the sudden change in topic. she sees the look of confusion and begins to clarify. "like, are you a light or heavy sleeper. just so we can adjust you is sharing what side of the dorm and whatnot."

"oh, heavy sleeper for sure." sasha manages to say with her mouth full.

"i'm a light sleeper like you mikasa."

and then there was you. should you tell them? maybe they wouldn't be so surprised considering the bags under your eyes. of course you tried to conceal them as much as possible but you were sure they were still a highlighted feature on your face. you sigh, going with your gut and telling them the truth. "i don't sleep. well i do but barely. i have insomnia."

they don't say anything right away, just stare at you. before annie finally speaks. "well, it's a good thing you and sasha share one side of the dorm. you can do whatever you want and she'll sleep through it."

you laugh a little at that. you guess that was one perk. "i guess you're right. as long as don't wake the two of you up either."

"damn straight." annie smiles at you and you all finally begin to eat. there were small comments here and there about how good the ramen was and annie scolding sasha about trying to not be such a messy eater. sasha would just stick her tongue out at annie in response before slurping loudly. the three girls had a good bond and you assumed that they definitely all knew each other prior considering they were all from the same city. paradis. you've always heard of how beautiful and peaceful it was there. it was a smaller city, definitely not as busy and hectic as marley. just like marley, paradis was a city you learned about through pictures and dreamed of visiting. anything was better than where you grew up.

"so, i guess armin, jean, marco and connie are all roomies." sasha mused as everyone had finished their meals.

"reiner and bertholdt joined a frat. fucking losers." annie chuckled.

"historia and ymir are in a sorority."

"suits them."

"eren has his own apartment a couple blocks away from the school."

you just listened to the three of them talk of people who you knew nothing about. it felt kind of awkward to just sit and listen but you really had nothing to contribute. you didn't know of anyone from oak town who made it into marley university and if you did, you weren't close with anyone of them to know of living situation. it sounded like they had a pretty big yet close knit friend group.

"why didn't you get an apartment with him?" sasha sputtered, looking at mikasa with shock.

mikasa pursed her lips, swirling her straw around her glass. "we broke up."

"what?!" the other say in shock, eyes almost popping out their skull. it took you a minute to put two and two together. eren and mikasa were a thing and now they weren't.

"we realized that we weren't in love with each other as we thought we were. i love him, of course, but i'm not in love with him. and he felt the same. so we called it off and continued as friends." mikasa explained. a small tint of blush coated her cheeks. "besides, i have my eyes on someone else."

a snicker is heard and you look up at annie. a smirk is on her face as if she has an idea of who it is. sasha is too stunned to speak. her eyes then shift to the entrance of the shop. your eyes follow hers to see a group of guys enter. one with a buzzcut looks in the direction of the table and grins widely.

"yo!" he shouts, making his way over. the others follow, talking amongst themselves.

"connie!" sasha cheers.

just then, your phone starts to vibrate in your pocket. you look to see an incoming phone call from your best friend, emi. you excuse yourself just as the group approaches the table.

"aw, did we scare her off?" connie asks.

you smile sheepishly and wave your phone. "phone call. i'll be back."

"cool! can't wait to welcome you to the group." says a guy with freckled cheeks. you just smile and head outside.

"finally! i thought you had forgotten about me!" emi whines as you answer.

"sorry, i'm at dinner." you chuckle.

"how is it? y/n in the big city already forgetting about lil ol me."

"oh shut up. it's so different from home but i love it. my roommates are great too." you share. it was true, after one dinner and the small talk, you loved them.

"that's great! i have news too!" emi cheers.

"lay it on me."

"i lost it."

you blink, confused. "lost what?"

"my v-card!" she whisper shouts and giggles.

"w-what? when?"

"literally two hours ago. it just happened. i can't explain it but it was so unexpected."

"to who? do i know him? is it someone we went to high school with?" you felt bad asking a million questions at once but you couldn't help it. emi wasn't seeing anyone nor did she tell you about any boys she was interested in. she was your best friend for ten years and you guys told each other everything.

emi hesitated though when answering which caught you a bit off guard. "we went to school with him yes, but you don't know him."

"oh." you said flatly. you realized that probably wasn't the appropriate response. you shook your head. "i'm happy though emi! if i was still in town, i'd do that tiktok thing where i'd buy you a cake and write virgin on it with it crossed out."

emi laughs at that. "if only. i'll let you go though. i just really needed you to be the first person i told. good luck on classes monday and let me know how it goes."

"will do, mom." you answer. this earns another laugh from emi and you bid each other farewell before hanging up.

walking back into the restaurant, you realize how lively your table has gotten.

"y/n, you're back!" sasha cheers as you reclaim your seat next to her. she throws her arm around your shoulders. "guys this is y/n."

"what it do, i'm connie." the buzzcut greets, giving you a peace sign. he was sitting next to a blonde boy that was sitting next you.

"marco." the boy with freckles states, from the other side of annie.

there was a guy sitting between mikasa and annie now. he had redish brown hair with some facial hair. you learned that this was jean. and by the attention he was receiving from mikasa, you assumed that this must be the guy her eyes have been on since the break up.

the boy next to you finally speaks up. "i'm armin." his eyes turn to the guy seated next to marco across the table. his head lay on his arms folded on the table beneath him. his hair was tied back lazily from what you could tell, loose strands making their way out of the hair tie.

armin sighs. "is he really asleep right now?"

marco elbows the sleeping boy. how could he sleep in a place like this? you wondered to yourself. the sleeping boy groans, moving his head to rest his chin on his arms. his eyes look to armin and then look to you.

"eren, this is y/n." marco introduces for you.

eren lets out a yawn. "yo."

so this was mikasa's ex. he's attractive, no doubt about it. your eyes flicker to mikasa and back to him. they definitely made a perfect couple but it was behind them now. eren straightened up his posture as the waitress came back to the table to take the orders from the guys.

once he was sitting up straight, you could really check him out. he was pretty well built from what you could tell from the long sleeve he worn. the long hair suited him well and framed his face perfectly. and his eyes were the prettiest shade of green you've ever seen.

"y/n, you're staring." sasha whispered in your ear. you snapped back to reality and felt a warmth come to your face.

"i zoned out." you tried to defend.

"sure." she drags out, smirking at you.

you take a drink of your water. maybe you were checking him out. he was attractive as hell and you could definitely see yourself having a crush on him.

that is if you didn't have a boyfriend you loved already.

which you did.
