Chapter Sixty-Four: The Other Girls.

---

Once we made it to a random room that looked to be a very small and private study inside, Angelina closed and locked the door.

When the lock clicked I momentarily had to reassure myself that Preston's mother would not hurt me, and even if she did, her son had my back.

"So I take it he hasn't told you... Well, I'm not surprised, my son has very questionable intentions most of the time," Angelina muttered the last bit bitterly.

I arched my eyebrow, "what are you talking about, questionable intentions?"

"Let me ask you, Natalya, why do you love my son? Is he holding you against your will? Is he buying your love? Is he blackmailing you? You can tell me, I'm not your enemy," Angelina stared at me pitifully.

I shook my head furiously, offended that she'd throw such vile accusations about her son at me like that.

"-No! He would never, your son Preston he is ridiculously good to me, he treats me like an equal, he is sweet, kind and compassionate-" I was counting on my fingers, almost reaching the next number but, only to be cut off by Angelina a second later.

"Are we talking about my son here or someone else?" She questioned and I nodded certainly.

She shook her head with a spiteful smile at the subject of the conversation- her son, "yeah I'm pretty sure... why does it feel like you are trying to chase me away?"

Angelina immediately frowned, looking apologetic and placing her hand on my shoulder, "I don't mean to be bitter, honey. You can just do so much better than my son."

"What?" I asked, shocked at how low she spoke of her son, the King.

I didn't know whether she was trying to make me hate Preston or what... Well, after hearing how much she didn't favour her son very well from Preston himself, I didn't really know what to make of her own intentions.

"As you know, we demons survive on souls and heart blood," I hummed along and she carried on, "pure souls are at the bottom of our food chain since a soul that's pure has no worth to us demons until we consume it."

Okay noted but what about my supposed "dark soul," what did that mean... And why did all this soul stuff matter anyway?

"Demons, vampires, witches, werewolves etc. It's natural to have dark souls if you're born as one of them but a human... a human with a dark soul, in the Shadowlands that's a big thing, it means you have a lot of power, a lot of strength."

I uncomfortably crossed my arms when she mentioned power, surprised that demons were smart enough to determine if you were powerful by your soul?? Wow.

"Power?" I said unsurely and Angelina eyed me with suspicion at how nervous I had gotten.

"A dark soul has more worth inside of the body of its possessor, especially if the possessor has human blood," Angelina explained, "honey you give immediate strength to any demon you give your heart too," she worriedly frowned again.

I give more and more strength to Preston then, the more I fall for him?

Angelina continued, "even a vampire, witch, werewolf or stranger may feel stronger in your presence, I, myself feel more energy standing with you than I did five minutes ago."

The realisation of what Angelina was trying to imply struck me, "so you think your son is using me for power?"

It angered me that she'd jump to that assumption seeing as Preston had been nothing but genuine and real with me.

"Yes, I do," she admitted quickly defending herself with, "don't get me wrong, you seem like a wonderful, intelligent girl and are scarily stunning, any mother would want a daughter like you but my son, he is evil."

I kept shaking my head with a spiteful smile of my own, "he is misunderstood, not evil. An evil person wouldn't admit they're evil, an evil person wouldn't treat me like an angel or help me in a time of need."

Before Angelina could cut me off, I lifted my hand signalling that I hadn't finished my point, "an evil person would hurt me, abuse me, get some kind of enjoyment from my suffering, an evil person would give me an unnecessary punishment, try to kill me and claim they did it all out of love, now that's my definition of evil."

I wanted to applaud myself for standing my own ground and defending my Preston in his absence, but I was more focused on Angelina's reply.

"Just because my son hasn't hurt you yet doesn't mean he is good Natalya. As his mother, I saw how he treated the girls before you... My son likes to find a girl, make her fall head over heels for him, manipulates her until she wants to do absolutely anything for him, turns her against her own, traps her, hurts her and eventually gets bored and kills her."

I was storing everything she was saying in the back of my mind, making sure to keep it stored so I would be extra cautious if what she was saying was to be true.

"I'm not like those girls, unlike those girls, your son put a ring on my finger, unlike the other girls, I'm smart enough to know when someone doesn't love me," I shrugged,  "I understand you are his mother, for that I respect you, but you really don't need to tell every girl he touches to run."

Angelina looked frustrated as she pursed her lips and lowered her grey-silver eyes to the ground, thinking hard before lifting her eyes back to mine. "Actually he did really love a demon girl, her name was Umayra, she was very pretty."

"Bet you've been wondering where Preston's father is?"

I knew she'd bring this up, Preston must've known too. Which is why he told me the truth before anyone could twist it.

"Preston killed him, I know he told me," I responded calmly and Angelina quietly gasped, "and even after he told you, you still remain by his side... I'm starting to wonder what your deal is?"

"I don't have a deal, your dead husband may he rest in peace and everything but he was a horrible man," I boldly stated, "it broke my heart hearing Preston sound vulnerable, telling me how his own father abused him and ruined his childhood."

"That boy would lie to death, his father never touched a bone of his body, and even if he did, it was justified, Preston was a troubled little boy, he still is..." Angelina glumly looked down at her feet.

I swallowed the guilt I felt seeing Preston's mother downhearted, "he abused you," I said aloud, catching Angelina's attention, "you don't need to protect your husband, his dead, you can speak out about what he did."

Angelina shifted uncomfortably, biting her top lip anxiously when I gently placed my hand on her arm, "you loved him so much but you were blinded by that love, that you couldn't see the bad in your husband that your son saw."

The softness and tenderness to my voice seemed to comfort Angelina as she sighed out and almost whimpered, "I have to warn you, he is just like his father."

I saw a tear leave her eye whilst her lips quivered as she spoke, "Preston doesn't realise how much I love him, and I feel awful that I neglected him for a long time after what he did, but I was blinded. But, I'm no longer blinded Natalya, to know that my son is bad news for a beautiful human girl like you."

I wasn't ignoring her warnings anymore, she had a real and valid reason to feel and act protectively over me.

"You've watched him grow, so I have no doubt that you know him better than anyone. However, don't worry for me, I'm stronger than you think. If your son does show any signs of harming me, I will act upon it but for now, I truly think he loves me for me," I truthfully reasoned with Angelina whom then nodded without question.

She finally smiled again, "okay, then I won't be the barrier between my son and your happiness, you sound very sure of yourself which brings me to ease seeing as I don't have to worry about you," she found my hand, squeezing it proudly, "I'm glad you've listened to me, the other girls didn't and you know where they ended up..."

"Dead," I breathed out shakily and she silently nodded her head before adding, "exactly."

Angelina comfortingly adds, "But don't you worry, I'll be keeping a close eye on you so much to prevent that from happening. One thing about Preston is he loves me, he tries to scare me but he would never hurt his own mother."

"Thank you," I drew my eyebrows in, feeling grateful for her protectiveness over me and maternal care, in which she easily shrugged like the security she was promising me was meaningless.

Derek's POV~

"I'm going crazy," Zac tugged at his combed over, dark brown hair then hit the table with his clenched fist, "I can't take it, sitting here whilst the witches have her locked up who knows where!"

We all sighed, each one of us although startled by the sudden impact of the Prince's fist to the table, being able to understand his frustration.

Especially Alaric who looked pensive and troubled by the situation of his missing sister. He was holding it together better than Zac, almost like he knew his sister was fine wherever she was.

"We will find her brother, I don't think any of us were able to sleep last night either," Xander rubbed his brother's back and as his eyes wandered off elsewhere and from the table, he abruptly stopped rubbing his brother's back and furrowed his eyebrows.

All of us noticed Alexander's sudden concentration at something over our shoulders and turned to see what it was all about.

I widened my eyes at whom he was staring at, as did everyone else.

"-Erm is that Ralph, as in the one that you guys tormented for being a brat," Alexander observantly said aloud.

Alaric rose from the table and threateningly questioned, "what's he still doing here?" Like he still had a huge sum of hatred for the lad.

"What do you mean 'still'?" I asked curiously on behalf of the other boys.

"-Wait, didn't you tell me something about Ralph trying to kill your sister when she was on her way to Aeralin almost a year ago?" Xavier pointed out to Alaric who responded with an angry head nod.

Zac twisted his neck with a questioning look that screamed what the fuck are you talking about at both Alaric and Xavier...

Chris, Xander, Douglas, Terrance, Dario and Aaron were as taken back as Zac. It seemed only I, Alaric and Xavier knew about the incident during Natalya's journey to the castle.

"I must have forgotten to mention it but the bastard laid his hands on my sister," Alaric said through his gritted teeth, "thankfully Roger was keeping watch of my sister and beat the idiot up."

Zac now rose from the table with the same mad glint in his eye as Alaric, "why the hell did Roger not kill the son of a bitch?!?"

"Apparently my sister begged him not to," Alaric shortly and mockingly laughed out, shrugging his shoulders as he exhaled.

Zac lifted his glass of fresh breakfast blood and chugged it down before mischievously responding, "well she never begged me."

We all watched as Prince Zac patted Alaric on the shoulder, brushing past him in order to leave the table and heading the direction to where Ralph was chatting away to some Lord.

The same alarmed expression spread across all our faces, our jaws lowering by the second as we watched Zac march across the inn's room to an unaware Ralph, who had no idea royalty was present.

We had asked Ser Walter not to announce our presence for our safety and time and had worn longline coats over our rich garments to hide our luxury backgrounds and blend in with the crowds.

However, Prince Zachary was five seconds away from blowing our cover.

1... "someone should maybe stop him," Douglas hesitantly looked between us and Zac.

2...

"No just leave it, he needs something to let his anger out on," Chris pulled Douglas back by the shoulder, patting his shoulder to show no offence.

3... "Roger should have killed him anyway, Ralph is a troublemaker," Aaron narrowed his eyes at Ralph who stood afar and still had no idea we were present or that Zac was about to beat the shit out of him.

4...

"Just warning you, as soon as my brother starts punching, there is little chance of us being able to stop him from killing Ralph," Xander notified and we all simultaneously looked at each other before shrugging nonchalantly.

5.

"Good," Alaric cruelly smirked and we all turned to see and hear Ralph frighteningly gasp at the shocking sight of Prince Zac's balled up fist before it collided with his face.

The collision between Prince Zac's fist and Ralph's face producing an excruciatingly gut-wrenching crack that rung in the ears of every person that seated or stood inside the inn.

We couldn't help but groan ourselves at the impact of the punch and begun to chant on our friend in the fight he'd started with the troublemaker boy we knew by the name of Ralph.

The people of the inn were taken off guard, little children screaming as they scattered out of the way of Prince Zac and a staggering Ralph, still oblivious to the fact he was the King to be in a month's time.

Ser Walter would be disappointed in on this. "You know what," Alaric lightly hit me on the chest for my attention, "that fucker deserves to be fucked up a little more, I'll be back."

"Oh no," I mumbled as Alaric went and entered the fight between Zac and Ralph. A fight which Zac was winning by a long run.

"This is for my sister, you prick!" Alaric violently slammed Ralph's head through the wall of the inn, creating a mess of crumbled wall and wallpaper on the wooden flooring.

Ralph slid down the rest of the wall defeatedly and Zac brotherly man-hugged Alaric, "if you ever touch her again, I will kill the rest of your shitty family."

"Excuse me, could you take this elsewhere," a man who seemed to be the father of two young children pushed through the people and confronted Zac and Alaric.

Dario whistled out, "man that guy is asking for a death wish."

"Tell me about it," Xavier chortled.

Prince Zac tilted his head to the side with a menacing smirk, "who do you think you are to talk to me like that," he glared straight into the brave man's eyes and crossed his arms intimidatingly.

"A rich man in a higher position than you, you scruffy little shit," the man courageously said with a mocking smile that you could tell had Zac fuming inside and out.

Chris brushed past us turning to warn us of what he was doing, "okay the man clearly doesn't know who he is speaking to, so before both Alaric and Zac kill him in front of his children, I'm going to stop this from escalating."

We all nodded, too busy fearing for the man who was having an intense stare off with Zac.

"Sorry to be a buzzkill but people of Miriadan and my Lord," Chris diverted his eyes from the public and to the man eyeing Zac irritatedly, pushing him away from the royalty he was friends with... "you aren't speaking to a scruffy little shit as you think, you are looking at royalty, you are bad-mouthing the prince of Asten to his face."

The man laughed out like he was hearing some kind of joke from Chris and a little boy who looked the age of 5 ran out and hugged his father's knee with a shy pout on his face, "you think we are lying, you wish," Alaric squinted his eyes in defence of Zac.

Ralph was finally picking himself up from the floor, but it took a lot of groaning, grumbling and struggling to balance his own self on two feet. "You don't want to anger him, th- they ar- are telling the truth," Ralph coughed out and the crowd of people widened their eyes, worriedly.

From that moment the Lord couldn't even look up into Zac's eyes anymore...

"What is going on here, I heard a loud crack?" Ser Walter urgently came running into the room, bringing everyone's attention to him except for the confrontational Lord who was trying to make sense of everything that had been said and an agitated Prince Zac, Chris and Alaric.

"The Prince of Asten, y- you are him?!"

Yes, that is him and he is not looking impressed whatsoever.

Which makes me wonder, will the father of two live after having bad-mouthed the prince to his face and would he be killed alongside Ralph right here, right now?
